Michigan bowler takes lead in two events at 2019 USBC Women’s Championships
Elizabeth McGarey of Warren, Michigan, rolled 222 in her final game at the 2019 United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships on June 8 to take the lead in Amethyst Singles and Amethyst All-Events.
McGarey started her singles set at Northrock Lanes with games of 197 and 146 before delivering in her final game to finish with a 565 series, and she added sets of 485 in team and 476 in doubles on the way to a 1,526 all-events tally.
Julie Holloway of Reeseville, Wisconsin, previously led Amethyst Singles with 559, and Nicole Sparks of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, led Amethyst All-Events with 1,506.
“I owe this in big part to both my husband, Elwood, and my late mother-in-law, Ileana,” said McGarey, who made her 17th USBC Women’s Championships appearance. “Ileana was the one who first got me into bowling at the state and national levels. She was a 25-year participant at the Women’s Championships. My husband, who’s an accomplished bowler in his own right, is the one who’s coached me.”

Oklahoma bowler leads Ruby All-Events in Wichita
Apryl Sneed of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, celebrated her birthday weekend at the 2019 USBC Women’s Championships by taking the Ruby All-Events lead on June 9.
The now 38-year-old right-hander made her run to the top of the leaderboard during her singles set at Northrock Lanes, rolling games of 211, 192 and 259 for a 662 series on the way to a 1,836 total.
Sneed added sets of 624 in team and 550 in doubles to surpass Renzie Kintzler of Cheyenne, Wyoming, who previously led with 1,824.
Her singles set also moved her into third place in Ruby Singles. Kintzler leads singles with 725.
Sneed, who made her debut at the Women’s Championships this year, celebrated her birthday June 8.
“I can’t believe it,” Sneed said. “I’m so excited. I’m definitely going to be coming back next year. Taking the lead in a national tournament is a great birthday present. I’ll never forget this one.”
Ruby Singles and All-Events includes bowlers with entering averages of 175-189.
South Carolina bowler makes 50th consecutive tournament appearance
Karen Bostian of Hilton Head, South Carolina, became the sixth and final bowler of the 2019 USBC Women’s Championships to celebrate five decades on the lanes after making her 50th consecutive tournament appearance June 6.
Bostian made her debut at the 1970 Women’s Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and her travels have allowed her to travel to 32 cities and 24 states to compete.
She received a plaque, chevron and commemorative necklace to recognize her longevity at the event.
“Honestly, it has been a goal to reach 50 years,” Bostian said. “I’m not quite sure why, but it just feels so good to be able to bowl year after year and be able to get out and travel.
In her 50th appearance, Bostian rolled scores of 406 in doubles, 337 in team and 334 in singles for an all-events total of 1,077.
Other bowlers joining the 50-Year Club at the 2019 Women's Championships included Marcie Baker of Fredericktown, Missouri; Muriel Casey of Fairfax, Virginia; Marilyn Miller of Two Rivers, Wisconsin; Marie Neugebauer of Glen Mills, Pennsylvania; and Fran Smith of Marshalltown, Iowa.
A look ahead
Less than three weeks remain before the 100th edition of the USBC Women’s Championships comes to a close.
The 2019 event, which kicked off April 20, will conclude June 30.
