BEN GAMEL LEAGUE MVP

Ben Gamel Named International League MVP
Al Pedrique Wins Manager of the Year

Moosic, Pa. – The SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/ New York Yankees) were well represented when the International League announced the 2016 year-end All-Stars on Tuesday. Highlighting six honorees, outfielder Ben Gamel was voted International League Most Valuable Player and Al Pedrique was named Manager of the Year. The RailRiders had four selected to the All-Star team: catcher Gary Sanchez, second baseman Donovan Solano and outfielders Aaron Judge and Gamel.
Gamel’s MVP selection is the third in the history of the SWB franchise. Shane Victorino was the Red Barons’ only MVP, winning in 2005 and Shelley Duncan was awarded the honor with the SWB Yankees in 2009. The Neptune Beach, Fla. native has the circuit’s sixth-best batting average (.309) and sits third in the IL with 148 hits. He leads the league with 78 runs scored, owns 26 doubles, five triples, six home runs, 51 RBI and leads the team with 19 stolen bases. Gamel was the International League Rookie of the Year in 2015.
In his first season as skipper of the RailRiders, Pedrique has guided his club to the best record in Triple-A at 84-52 and numerous franchise records have either been matched or eclipsed. Pedrique is the fourth different SWB manager to earn the IL’s Manager of the Year honor. Lee Elia (1992), Marc Bombard (2002), John Russell (2006) and Dave Miley (2007, 2012) were the prior recipients.
The All-Star selection for Sanchez was his second of the season. He was named the starting catcher for the International League in the Midsummer Classic in Charlotte. Sanchez hit .282 in 71 games with the RailRiders, launching 21 doubles and 10 home runs while driving in 51. He stole seven bases in eight attempts. Sanchez has since become the first rookie to ever win consecutive American League Player of the Week honors with the New York Yankees.
Judge led the RailRiders with 19 home runs and 65 RBI before his promotion to New York on August 13. The 6’7” slugger had a breakout June in which he hit .343 with nine homers and drove in 25 to earn IL Player of the Month honors. His final at-bat with SWB was a home run at Frontier Field on August 12 at Rochester.
Solano boasts a .311 batting average over 125 games that ranks fifth in the IL. He leads the circuit with 151 hits. The Colombian has hit nearly .400 through 27 games played in August, going 39-for-100. During this span, he authored a nine-game hitting streak and has multiple hits in 12. His 63 RBI are second only to Judge.
The RailRiders’ magic number to clinch a second-straight IL North Division championship is four. The team returns home this Labor Day Weekend for the final four games of the regular season. SWB hosts the Buffalo Bisons (Toronto Blue Jays) on Friday, September 2. The night features a replica Friday night jersey giveaway to the first 2,500 fans, brought to you by PNC Bank. Graig Nettles will appear to wrap up the 2016 Legends Series, presented by Maines Food and Party Warehouse & Mohegan Sun Pocono. B-METS WIN 3-1

B-Mets “Cruz” to Skid-Snapping 3-1 Win
ALTOONA, PA – Maikis De La Cruz launched a solo home run and Victor Cruzado delivered a tiebreaking two-run triple to lead the Binghamton Mets past the Altoona Curve, 3-1, on Tuesday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. The B-Mets coupled the outfielders’ offensive output with six strong innings from Tyler Pill to snap a four-game losing streak.
Cruzado delivered his pivotal hit after Dominic Smith started a two-out rally in the sixth with a single. Matt Oberste followed with a walk. Immediately after pitching coach Justin Meccage visited the mound, Cruzado ripped Brandon Waddell’s first pitch into the right-field alley. The B-Met outfielder dove into third base with his first triple of the season.
The game-swinging three-bagger gave Pill all he needed. The righty shook off a bumpy first inning and closed his night with five scoreless innings. After Jin-De Jhang dumped an RBI single in the first, Pill retired 16 of the final 19 batters he faced. No Curve runner advanced past first base in Pill’s final five innings.
Pill received some help from his defense. With two aboard in the first, Smith made an over-the-shoulder basket catch on a foul ball down the right-field line to end the inning. In the fourth, Champ Stuart crashed into the fence in right-center after a long pursuit to rob Eric Wood of an extra-base hit.
De La Cruz snapped a lengthy drought and put the B-Mets on the board by blasting a solo homer to left-center. It was the B-Mets first team home run since August 23 and De La Cruz’s first long ball since July 1.
With a two-run lead, Tim Peterson worked around a one-out walk in a scoreless seventh before firing a perfect eighth. David Roseboom side-stepped a leadoff single in the ninth and registered a pair of strikeouts to earn his 14th save.
In his first start with Binghamton following a four-game stint in Triple-A, Pill (9-10) allowed one run on four hits over six innings. He struck out six and walked two.
Waddell (7-9) was touched for three runs on seven hits over six innings in his seventh straight winless start.
The B-Mets (62-72) continue their four-game visit to Altoona on Wednesday at 6:00 PM. RHP Mickey Jannis gets the ball against RHP Tyler Eppler. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 5:45 PM on News Radio 1290, WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.
POSTGAME NOTES: Tyler Pill earned his 25th career win as a B-Met, extending the franchise record…Pill is 6-1 in his last seven starts with the B-Mets…Binghamton pinch-hitters went 2-for-2 in the contest (Stefan Sabol & Jayce Boyd)

Nestor Cortes Shines in Triple-A Debut
RailRiders Record Third Straight Shutout of Buffalo, 24th Overall

Buffalo, N.Y. – The SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/ New York Yankees) used a dominant Triple-A debut by Nestor Cortes to blank the Buffalo Bisons 4-0 on Tuesday night at Coca-Cola Field. The RailRiders (85-52) have won seven straight in Buffalo and 11-of-12 against the Bisons (66-72) overall.

Cortes (1-0) fired 5.2 no-hit innings in his first start with SWB. The southpaw issued three walks and struck out four. Luis Severino and Dietrich Enns combined for the final 3.1 frames. Severino struck out five over 2.1 innings, yielding two hits.

After earning International League Most Valuable Player earlier in the day, Ben Gamel continued his strong season with a hit and two runs scored. Rob Refsnyder plated Gamel on a single to center in the first inning for a 1-0 lead.

Donovan Solano drove in a run in the fourth and sixth innings for a 3-0 lead. The IL year-end All-Star finished 2-for-4. Mason Williams also tallied two hits. His second of the evening brought around Gamel in the eighth for the final margin.

OFF THE RAILS:

SWB moved closer to claiming their second straight IL North Division title with tonight’s win. The team sits 4.0 games up in the division with six to play.

The RailRiders have blanked the Bisons in three straight meetings, a span of 31 consecutive innings that reach back to a 3-2 win in the opener of a doubleheader on July 26 at PNC Field.

SWB relievers have held opponents scoreless for 14 straight innings while striking out 33 in that span.

Catcher Kyle HIgashioka has caught 11 shutouts in 31 starts behind the plate with SWB.

After finishing 2-for-4, Solano leads the IL with 153 hits and his .312 batting average is fifth best on the circuit.  Solano owns a .394 average (41-for-104) through 28 games played in August with 13 multi-hit efforts.

RED WINGS EDGE RAILRIDERS 6-2

Refsnyder Spoils No-No, Bullpen Dominates
Red Wings Claim Season Series

Rochester, N.Y. – The SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) fell to the Rochester Red Wings (Minnesota Twins) at Frontier Field on Monday night, 6-2. The RailRiders lost the season series to the Red Wings, 9-8.

Rochester starter Tyler Duffey carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before Rob Refnsyder’s one-out single to center field. It would prove one of three hits for the SWB offense on the night.

Rochester put crooked numbers on the board in the second and third against starter Brady Lail. Byron Buxton and James Beresford each knocked home a score in the second while all nine Red Wings came to the plate in a four-run third. The inning included RBIs for Mitch Garver, Heiker Meneses and two for James Beresford. Lail had been lifted with the bases loaded and two outs in favor of Johnny Barbato, who gave up the Beresford two-run single.

SWB scored twice after Refsnyder cracked the seal in the seventh thanks to Jake Cave’s two-run double.

Duffey (1-0) got the win while Lail (6-6) suffered the loss.

The SWB bullpen combined to record 13 strikeouts over 5.1 scoreless innings. Barbato struck out five over his 2.2 innings while James Pazos whiffed all five Red Wings he faced. At one point the bullpen struck out eight straight men before Beresford singled off of Nick Goody.

The RailRiders’ road trip shifts to Buffalo for a series with the Bisons (Toronto Blue Jays). It gets underway at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday night with SWB right-hander Luis Severino (8-1, 3.60) facing right-hander Scott Copeland (3-2, 3.47).

The team returns home on Friday, Sept. 2 to host the Bisons. The Glow-in-the-Park Friday will see the team sport its neon green and black jerseys. And the first 2,500 fans will receive a Friday Night replica jersey courtesy of PNC Bank. Game 12 of the 2016 Legends Series will have former Yankee Graig Nettles in attendance thanks to Maines Food and Party Warehouse and Mohegan Sun Pocono. It will be Penn State Night at PNC Field with a post-game Jack Williams Tire and Auto and Yokohama Tire Fireworks Show. On Friends and Family Day for $40 fans can purchase four meal vouchers and four tickets, presented by McDonald’s. It’s also Mother-Son Night Out.

OFF THE RAILS:
Johnny Barbato entered the night having stranded all 17 of his inherited runners on the season between Triple-A SWB (12) and the New York Yankees (5). He had not allowed an inherited runner to score since Aug. 8, 2015 at Toledo.

The bullpen’s 13 strikeouts fell one short of the franchise record that was set the night before, also at Rochester.

Lehigh Valley lost at Buffalo, 3-2, lowering the RailRiders’ magic number to win the division. It rests at four to claim the division outright and three for at least a share of the crown. In the case of a tie, the RailRiders would win the tiebreaker thanks to claiming the season series, 10-8.

From 08-13, SWB never lost the season series to Rochester, going 64-32 head-to-head. The RailRiders have lost two of the last three regular-season series to the Red Wings, going 24-29 in that time.

Mason Williams finished 0-for-4, but hit the ball hard twice. He lined out to center to start the game and laced a groundout to first in the sixth.

Cesar Puello went 1-for-3 with a walk. In 14 games played this month he has gone 13-for-35 (.371) with five extra-base hits, eight RBIs and four runs scored.

The International Leagues year-end All-Star team and superlative honors will be announced on Tuesday, Aug. 30.

Heiker Meneses entered the game with four hits in 19 games played for Rochester. He singled in each of his first two at-bats on Monday with an RBI and a run scored.

Barbasol, PBA Sign Two-Year Barbasol PBA Players Championship Agreement
PBA major championship returns to Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl in February

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Aug. 29, 2016) – The Professional Bowlers Association and Barbasol have agreed to a two-year partnership agreement that will return the Barbasol PBA Players Championship to Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl in 2017 and 2018, PBA CEO and Commissioner Tom Clark announced today.

The 2017 Barbasol PBA Players Championship, a major championship on the 2017 PBA Tour schedule, will conclude with live ESPN television coverage on Sunday, Feb. 12, at 1 p.m. ET.

Barbasol’s continuing role as the Official Shaving Cream of the PBA will also include jersey sponsorship of the PBA League’s Motown Muscle team, which will be part of the 2017 PBA League Elias Cup competition in Portland, Maine, in April.

The PBA Players Championship in Columbus now brings the event closer to the company’s headquarters and manufacturing facilities, which are based in Ohio.

“We are very proud to continue our long-standing partnership with the PBA,” said John Price, President of Perio, Inc. “Barbasol’s rich legacy of sports sponsorships and strong American heritage are a great fit with the PBA and its loyal fan base, and we’re excited to keep the Barbasol Players Championship in Columbus, Ohio.”

The two-year agreement, PBA CEO and Commissioner Tom Clark said, will help all parties associated with the event.

“The PBA is extremely excited to not only renew our relationship with Barbasol, but to expand it to 2018 which gives all parties, including our players, a chance to build upon a great event,” said PBA CEO and Commissioner Tom Clark. “It’s a great opportunity for our host center, the Columbus bowling community and for PBA fans around the world, and we thank Barbasol for helping make that happen.”

KNAPP LEAGUE PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Knapp Named League Pitcher of the Week
BINGHAMTON, NY – Binghamton Met starter Ricky Knapp has been named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week. In two starts during the week (August 22-28), the Florida native struck out 16 over 16.0 innings and tossed a nine-inning complete game.
On August 23 against the Hartford Yard Goats, Knapp fired one of the best performances of the season by a B-Met. He struck out a career-high 10, allowed just three hits, and went wire-to-wire in the first nine-inning complete game by a B-Met since July 2015. Knapp struck out seven over seven innings in a losing effort on Sunday afternoon against Bowie.
Drafted by the Mets in the 8th round in 2013, Knapp has pitched at the three highest levels in the Mets Minor League system this season. In his time with Binghamton, St. Lucie (High-A) and Las Vegas (AAA), he has gone 13-6 with a 2.56 ERA over 24 games (23 starts).
Knapp is the third B-Met to receive weekly league honors this season. Rafael Montero was named Pitcher of the Week in early August and Phillip Evans was recognized as the top player last week.
Knapp and the B-Mets (61-71) open a four-game series against the Curve in Altoona at 6:00 PM on Monday. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting a 5:45 PM on News Radio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.

LPGA QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT

Stage I of LPGA Qualifying Tournament
Rancho Mirage, California
Dinah Shore Course, Arnold Palmer Course, Gary Player Course
August 28, 2016
Sunday Final-Round News & Notes

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. August 28, 2016 - Daniela Darquea (Quito, Ecuador) carded a 2-under, 70 on Sunday to earn medalist honors at Stage I of LPGA Qualifying Tournament with a four-day total of 10-under, 278. She was the only player, in a field that started at 347, to post four straight under-par rounds. Princess Superal (Dasmarinas City, Philippines), the 2014 U.S. Junior Girls’ Amateur champion and Sarah Schmelzel (Phoenix, Ariz.), a Golfweek Honorable Mention All-American at South Carolina, finished in a tie for second at 9-under, 279. The youngest player in the field, 17-year-old Nasa Hataoka (Japan) finished fourth at 8-under, 280.

A total of 92 players advanced out of Stage I and the cut was made at 6-over, 278.

Darquea, a senior at the University of Miami, tallied three birdies against just one bogey in the final-round. She made just five bogeys over the four rounds.

“I was really focused on getting to the second stage and I had a really good week here,” said Darquea. “I always thought my game was on point and it is probably the best golf I’ve played in my life.”

Darquea, a Golfweek Third Team All-American in 2016, intends to try and reach the LPGA Tour for the start of the 2017 season. She would forego the second half of her senior season if she makes it through Stage II and III and decides to turn professional.

“I had a really good year at Miami and this summer I went home to Ecuador and I started practicing a lot,” said Darquea. “I had surgery in January (to clear wrist inflammation) and I am just getting more and more comfortable.”

Darquea will now gear up for Stage II.

“I feel I am one step closer to my dream,” said Darquea. “I think I now need to focus on Stage II because that is a very important step.”

There are currently no players from Ecuador on the LPGA Tour.

NOW 33, KIM WELCH ADVANCES AND STILL BELIEVES: It seems like forever ago that Kim Welch (Sacramento, Calif.) got her first ‘big break’ when she won Golf Channel’s Big Break Ka’anapali. Eight years later, Welch was back at Stage I of LPGA Qualifying Tournament and easily advanced with a 1-over, 73 to finish at even-par for the four days. It was her eighth Stage I with her first coming ten years ago in 2006.

Welch, now 33, is trying to keep her dream of LPGA success alive. She has played in 24 career LPGA events and has competed on the Symetra Tour on and off since 2011.

“If I didn’t think that I could still play on the LPGA, I wouldn’t be spending that type of money on Q-School,” said a candid Welch. “I absolutely believe that I should be out there, can be out there and will be.”

Welch opened Stage I with a 67 and closed with rounds of 72-76-73. She was in a fairly comfortable spot (T29) heading into the final round, but was 3-over through 14 holes and hit the ball in the water on hole six.

“I was thinking this could get pretty ugly fast,” said Welch, who was able to make par. “That was the turning point and I closed with two birdies on the final three holes so I made it interesting, but I’m excited to move on.”

Welch has played in just one Symetra Tour event this year. She has been home the last two months just practicing and preparing. She plans to do the same in preparation for Stage II.

“I came in this week thinking it was a formality to advance to Stage II and posting a low score on day one helped me relax,” said Welch. “My game is feeling good and I’m looking forward to Stage II.”

LAURA DIAZ HELPS SIERRA SIMS ADVANCE: Sierra Sims (Austin, Texas) grew up like many young golfers, idolizing Tiger Woods. When she got to Wake Forest three years ago, she found another role model - former LPGA Tour player Laura Diaz, who serves as a volunteer assistant coach.

“Laura has really become my role model and someone I look to for advice,” said Sims. “She played on Tour and won on Tour so she is a great person to have around our team.”

Sims, a senior at Wake Forest, closed with an even-par 72 to finish T17 at 2-under, 286. She rebounded very nicely from an opening round 79.

“It was definitely a great experience and I came out a week early to play the NWGA event on the Dinah Shore course and that helped,” said Sims. “I’m very excited to move on and I’m happy with how I didn’t give in after a 79 on day one.”

Sims plans on graduating from Wake Forest and not turning professional until June of 2017.

OREGON’S INGLIS CARDS 68 TO ADVANCE: Caroline Inglis (Eugene, Oregon) was just hoping for an even-par round on Sunday, but posted a 4-under, 68 to easily advance out of Stage I. The 68 was the low round of the day.

Inglis, 22, who grew up minutes from the Oregon campus and just graduated from Oregon in May, made five birdies on the day including back-to-back on 11 and 12 to rebound from her lone bogey of the day on ten.

“I knew Dinah Shore never plays easy and I thought even-par or 1-over would be fine and I really put together a solid round,” said Inglis. “It was actually a very interesting round as my group was on the clock and I’ve never really had that experience, but I hit a lot of fairways and hit the ball well.”

Inglis played the Dinah Shore course on Saturday and shot even-par and was in a tie for 80th coming into the day.

“It is one step at a time and I’m happy to advance,” said Inglis. “It was definitely a good experience and to know I can perform well in crunch time is important. Hopefully I can take the momentum to stage II and I never have to come back to Stage I.”

Inglis was a three-time Oregon state high school champion and won the Pac-12 Championship in 2015. She finished the 2015-16 season with the fourth lowest scoring average in school history (72.89).

“It was awesome,” said Inglis of her experience at Oregon. “It was definitely the right decision to stay home and go to Oregon. We got to finish out my career at nationals on our home course. I love the University of Oregon.”

Inglis said the LPGA wasn’t really on her radar until her junior and senior seasons at Oregon when she really started to perform at a high level.

Her father, William, introduced her to the game of golf. Unfortunately, he passed away during her freshman year in high school. Inglis credits both her parents for their unwavering support.

“They have just been so supportive of me and I’m excited to see the work pay off.”

OF NOTE
• Mariah Stackhouse posted a 6-over, 78 on Sunday, but still easily advanced out of Stage I at 2-under, 286 for the four days. She finished in a tie for 17th.
• Three of the four Olympians in the field (Aditi Ashok, India, Tiffany Chan, Hong Kong and Michelle Koh,
Malaysia) advanced to Stage II of LPGA Qualifying Tournament.
• A total of 32 amateurs advanced out of Stage I and will compete in Stage II.

B-METS LOSE 6-2

Sisco’s Net Work Too Much for B-Mets, 6-2
BOWIE, MD – Bowie catcher Chance Sisco drove in three runs to carry the Baysox past the Binghamton Mets, 6-2, on Sunday afternoon on Prince George’s Stadium. Amed Rosario compiled a three-hit game and drove in both Binghamton runs in the losing effort.
Binghamton mustered one run against Bowie starter Matthew Grimes. The righty slipped out of a bases-loaded threat in the second before stranding two more in the third. Rosario put the B-Mets on the board with a two-out RBI single to shallow center.
After Sharlon Schoop tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, Sisco lined a two-out, two-run double into the left-field alley against B-Mets starter Ricky Knapp in the sixth.
Rosario cut the deficit in half in the eighth by threading an RBI triple into the right-field corner. The B-Mets shortstop was thrown out at home attempting to score the tying run on a chopper to third, the second B-Met nabbed at the plate in the game.
With their lead trimmed to one, Bowie answered back in the eighth. Sisco blasted a solo homer, his fourth of the season, off Paul Paez and Henry Urrutia capped the three-run inning by adding a two-run homer to right.
Knapp (4-1) struck out seven, but allowed three runs on four hits over seven innings in his first loss of the season. Grimes (3-4) scattered five hits and struck out four in six innings of work.

RAILRIDERS SECURE PLAYOFF BERTH

RailRiders Pop Champagne, Secure Playoff Berth
Holder Dominant, Whiffs 12 of Final 13

Rochester, N.Y. – Closed by one of the franchise’s most dominant relief performances of all-time, the SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) beat the Rochester Red Wings (Minnesota Twins) on Sunday, 3-1, and secured the franchise’s seventh playoff appearance in a decade as the Yankees’ top affiliate. Reliever Jonathan Holder closed the game by striking out 12 of the 13 men he faced including 11 in a row for a storybook save. The RailRiders’ (84-51) pitching staff combined for 22 strikeouts while the Red Wings (76-60) scored just one unearned run.

In his first outing after he was activated from the Yankees’ 60-day disabled list and optioned to SWB, Bryan Mitchell overcame a slow start to strike out eight over 3.2 innings at the start. He allowed one unearned run thanks to his own throwing error in the first inning.

Former Red Wing Chris Parmelee tied the game with a solo homer in the fourth.  He gave his club the lead with a single to center in the sixth and scored when the next pitch was tripled to right by Donovan Solano.

Tyler Webb (4-3) recorded the win with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief and Holder earned his sixth save.

The series concludes at 7:05 p.m. on Monday night as right-hander Brady Lail (6-5, 4.79) faces Tyler Duffey (0-0, 1.72).

B-METS LOSE 5-0

B-Mets Stranded at Bay in Bowie, 5-0
BOWIE, MD – The Binghamton Mets left 10 runners on base in a 5-0 loss to the Bowie Baysox on Saturday night at Prince George’s Stadium. The B-Mets went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position in their eighth shutout loss of the season.
Glynn Davis opened the scoring for the Baysox by belting a two-run homer off B-Mets spot-starter Logan Taylor in the second inning. Bowie stretched their lead with a three-spot in the fifth against B-Met relievers Alberto Baldonado and Luis Mate.
The five-run cushion proved to be plenty for Bowie starter David Hess (5-12). The righty snapped a six-game winless slump with the victory. Hess scattered six hits and stranded eight runners over six scoreless innings to earn his second win since June 7.
Binghamton had several chances against Hess, but failed to break through with a timely hit. Maikis De La Cruz struck out to leave the bases loaded in the second and fanned again in the fourth to leave two more aboard.
Major League rehabber Brian Duensing tossed two scoreless innings before Bobby Bundy fired a perfect ninth.
Taylor (4-2) walked four and surrendered two runs on four hits in the loss, his first defeat as a starter this season.
The B-Mets (61-70) conclude their season series against Bowie on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 PM. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 1:50 PM on News Radio 1290, WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.

RAILRIDERS FALLS IN 11

Higashioka Homers, RailRiders Fall in 11
RailRiders’ Catcher Launches Ninth Triple-A Homer

Moosic, Pa. – The Rochester Red Wings pushed across a run in the top of the 11th inning and held on to defeat the SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/ New York Yankees) 5-4. The Red Wings (76-59) have won three straight against the RailRiders (83-51) and lead the season series 8-7.

Jake Reed (1-1) took home the win with two scoreless innings and Edward Mujica held the RailRiders off in the final frame for his 24th save. Nick Goody shouldered the loss after allowing a run on two hits and three walks in one inning of work.

Rochester starter Nick Greenwood spun six no-hit innings while the Red Wings built a 4-0 lead. With two out in the seventh, though, the RailRiders’ offense came to life. Chris Parmelee doubled and scored when Kyle HIgashioka launched a towering home run to deep left.

SWB tied the game in the eight on a double by Mason Williams and a sacrifice fly to left by Parmelee.

Rochester loaded the bases against Goody in the top of the 11th on a walk to Kenny Vargas, a single by Adam Brett Walker and an intentional free pass to Daniel Palka. Wilfredo Tovar worked a base on balls to push across Walker for a 5-4 lead. James Pazos entered and whiffed the final two batters to end the threat.

Parmelee opened the last of the final frame with a single and was lifted for pinch runner Pete Kozma. Pinch hitter Donovan Solano scorched a single to center and Kozma raced to third. Mujica settled in to strikeout Jake Cave and Cito Culver to end the game.

The RailRiders’ lead in the International League North Division is now four with nine games left to play. SWB seeks a playoff berth when they battle the Rochest Red Wings on Sunday, August 28 at Frontier Field. Right-hander Bryan Mitchell (0-1, 6.75, A/A+/AA) makes his first start for SWB in 2016. WEBER AGAIN PLAYERS OF YEAR PBA50

Pete Weber Puts Together Historic 2016 Season
to Earn Second Consecutive PBA50 Player of the Year Crown
Ohio’s Eddie Graham wins Rookie of the Year, Ron Mohr earns PBA60 Player of the Year honors

CHICAGO – Despite missing four of 13 tournaments, Pete Weber put together the most dominant season since the Professional Bowlers Association started its division for players 50 years of age and older in 1981.

Weber, who turned 54 on Aug. 21, earned his second consecutive PBA50 Player of the Year crown thanks to winning a record six tournaments in 2016, including a record string of four in a row. Among his six wins were two majors – his second consecutive Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by 900 Global and his second USBC Senior Masters title, his first coming in his rookie season of 2013.

Bowling in nine tournaments, his string of four consecutive wins included the PBA50 UnitedHealthcare Sun Bowl In The Villages presented by Radical, PBA50 Mooresville Ford Open presented by Columbia 300 and Miller High Life, and the PBA50 Johnny Petraglia BVL Open presented by Brunswick leading up to his Senior U.S. Open win. His sixth win came in the PBA50 South Shore Open presented by DV8.

Weber also had second-place finishes in the PBA50 Northern California Classic presented by MOTIV and the PBA50 Treasure Island Resort & Casino World Championship presented by Storm, and a fourth-place in the season-opening Pasco County Florida Open, which was his lowest finish of the season.

“Don’t get me wrong, I threw the ball well this year but I have to admit I got a lot of breaks this year and it seemed like my opponents got the bad breaks,” said Weber. “It was just one of those years. I hated to miss those last three tournaments because there was probably another title there somewhere.”

Weber’s season ended prematurely because of a nagging hip injury that he hopes won’t be a factor as he gets ready for the upcoming PBA Fall Swing that starts over the Labor Day weekend in suburban Detroit.

“It’s in good shape now after going to the doctor and not bowling for a while,” Weber said. “I’ll probably take another week off and have my brother Rich do a little analysis of how I’m throwing the ball and just go from there.”

With his six wins, Weber ran his career PBA50 Tour win total to 10 which puts him in a tie with Walter Ray Williams Jr. for fourth place on the all-time PBA50 Tour titles list. John Handegard is the leader with 14 titles.

Winning POY with 457,200 points, nearly twice Amleto Monacelli’s 241,680 second-place total, Weber also led two other statistical categories by whopping margins. He averaged a record 237.03 for 265 games and took home $73,200 in earnings.

“I had some pretty good years on the PBA Tour where I won multiple titles and made a lot of shows but winning (PBA50) Player of the Year two years in a row ranks right up there with what I was able to accomplish on the ‘kids’ tour,” said Weber, who never won player of the year on the regular tour. “The atmosphere is a little different on the PBA50 Tour than it is on the regular tour but I can tell you, nobody’s intimidated.”

Weber’s closest competitor in earnings was Monacelli with $38,775. Monacelli was the only other multiple winner in 2016, capturing two titles, the PBA50 Fountain Valley Open presented by Track and the PBA50 National Championship to Benefit Riley Hospital for Children for his seventh PBA50 title and fourth major.

Norm Duke, the winner of the PBA50 Treasure Island Resort & Casino World Championship for his third PBA50 Tour title and second major, finished second in average, nine pins behind Weber with 228.31.

Other players winning titles in 2016 were hall of famers Williams (Pasco County Florida Open), Brian Voss (Dave Small’s Championship Lanes Classic presented by Roto Grip) and newcomers Noel Vazquez (Northern California Classic presented by MOTIV) and Eddie Graham Jr. (DeHayes Insurance Group Championship presented by Pro Bowl West and Ebonite). Voss, Vazquez and Graham were all first-time PBA50 Tour winners.

With their wins on the PBA50 Tour, Weber and Williams also edged closer to the 100 overall PBA titles mark with both players currently sitting at 99, including PBA Tour, PBA Regional, PBA50 Tour and PBA50 Regional titles.

As the top rookie in points, Graham, a five-time PBA Regional titlist including the 2007 Regional Players Invitational, earned Rookie of the Year honors.

Graham cashed in the last nine consecutive tournaments of the season and won his first PBA50 Tour title in the DeHayes Insurance Group Championship.

With his big finish, Graham also moved into eighth place on the season-long competition points list to qualify for the PBA50 Challenge which will be contested on Nov. 27 and aired live on Xtra Frame as part of the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling VIII in Reno. Graham will join Weber, Monacelli, Duke, Williams, Voss, Parker Bohn III and Mohr in the eight-game round robin match play event. All eight also earned paid entries to compete in WSOB VIII.

Mohr, in earning PBA60 Player of the Year honors, had six PBA50 top-five finishes and eight top five’s, including the ITRC Super Senior Classic and PBA60 Dick Weber Championship presented by Hammer, which were limited to players 60 years and older.

Among Mohr’s top finishes were second-place finishes in the UnitedHealthcare Sun Bowl In The Villages and the Dick Weber Championship.

Winning the “super senior” events were Don Sylvia, capturing the Dick Weber Championship title, and Junichi Yajima winning the ITRC Super Senior Classic.

In addition to Weber, Monacelli, Duke, Williams and Bohn will return to action against the younger generation in the PBA Fall Swing at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mich. Sept. 4-11.

QUBICA AMF PBA REGIONAL UPDATE:  KENT WINS LONGEST-RUNNING PBA REGIONAL
Marshall Kent of Yakima, Wash., posted an 10-5-1 match play record and a 24-game total of 5,810 pins Sunday to win his fourth QubicaAMF PBA Regional title in the PBA Dave Husted Northwest Open presented by 900 Global at Husted’s Milwaukee Bowl.

Kent, who earned $2,000, defeated Craig Tuholski of Troutdale, Ore., by 61 pins for the win. Tuholski had an 11-5 match play record and 5,749 pins for his 24 games, including match play bonus pins.

The tournament was the 37th annual regional hosted by the Husted family at the family-owned Milwaukie Bowl. It’s the longest running regional in the PBA.

● Collegiate bowler Justin Bui from Terrytown, La., dominated the non-champion field to win the PBA Bowling Dynamix Houston Emerald Bowl Challenge, presented by Hammer, Sunday in Houston, Texas, after Latvia’s Diana Zavjalova topped the PWBA/PBA Houston Emerald Southwest Women’s Open field on Saturday.

Bui, who finished the 21-game tournament with a 6-2 match play record and 4,990 total pins, started the modified eight-game round-robin finals with a 232-pin lead over fellow non-member Adam Martinez of San Antonio, Texas, and continued his supremacy to win by 316 pins over Jacob Heger of Spring, Texas, to claim the $2,400 first place check. Because Bui also is a non-member, he doesn’t receive credit for a PBA title.

On Saturday, Zavjalova, who is now living in Austin, Texas, survived a late rush by Colombia national team bowlers Anggie Ramirez and Clara Guerrero who also live in Austin. After Zavjalova finished the eight-game event with 1,681 total pins, she had to wait and watch as both challengers had a chance to pass her with two strikes in their 10th frames. Neither managed to strike, however, leaving Zavjalova with the $1,200 winner’s check. Ramirez earned $800 for second, while Guerrero collected $460.

● Concluding the August schedule of QubicaAMF PBA Regional events over the Aug. 26-28 weekend will be the Fayetteville South Open presented by MOTIV along with the PWBA-PBA Fayetteville South Open – a women’s only event - at Lafayette Lanes in Fayetteville, N.C.; the AMF Garland Lanes Southwest Open, presented by Classic Products & Ultimate Bowling Products, in Garland, Texas, and the Aquimo West Open at Mesa East Bowl in Mesa, Ariz.

● Looking ahead to Labor Day weekend, the QubicaAMF PBA Regional calendar includes the PBA60 Wilson & Sons Pest Control South Open followed by the PBA50 Budweiser Open presented by Mooresville Ford and Columbia 300 at George Pappas’ Victory Lanes in Mooresville, N.C.; the PBA50 Strike Zone Open presented by Columbia 300 in Pottsville, Pa., and the PBA Japan Region’s Viper Open presented by Ebonite in Iruma, Japan.
