Ponies Knock Off Cats on Mazeika’s Big Hit in 10th
Manchester, NH – Patrick Mazeika hit the go-ahead two-run single in the 10th that was just enough for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (1-0) to get past the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 3-2 in ten innings at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium Wednesday evening. The Ponies have now taken the first two games of the series, ending a run of five straight series that they had dropped.
Mazeika finished 3-5 with 2 RBI and has five RBI over the first two games of the series. In the tenth, he came up with the bases loaded and two out, with his single to right-center scoring Lee and Ali Sanchez.
The two teams only scoring through the first nine innings came via sacrifice flies. The Fisher Cats (0-1) Logan Warmoth hit a sac fly to center off Mickey Jannis to put New Hampshire up 1-0 in the fourth. The Ponies then loaded the bases in the sixth with one out and Barrett Barnes hit a sac fly to score Braxton Lee from third to tie the game.
Jannis allowed one run over five and a third innings in the no-decision. Stephen Villines pitched two and two thirds scoreless frames in his first appearance with Binghamton since May 4th. Matt Blackham (4-1) pitched a perfect ninth and closed out the game in the tenth to get the win. Dany Jimenez escaped trouble in the ninth with the Ponies failing to score with runners on the corners and nobody out before giving up the two runs in the 10th to take the loss (1-1).
The Rumble Ponies go for the sweep on Thursday night in Manchester with first pitch at 6:35PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and on the Binghamton Rumble Ponies channel on TuneIn. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pregame show gets underway at 6:20PM.
