SQUIRRELS DEFEAT B-METS 4-2

Squirrels Make B-Mets See Double in 4-2 Defeat
RICHMOND, VA – The Richmond Flying Squirrels scored four runs on three straight doubles in the third and turned a critical double play in the seventh to beat the Binghamton Mets, 4-2, on Wednesday night at The Diamond. Dominic Smith celebrated his 21st birthday with a two-run single in the sixth.
All of Richmond’s run-production against Tyler Pill was condensed into the third inning. With two outs, Ryder Jones scorched a two-run double over Stefan Sabol’s head in right field. Ricky Oropesa and Hunter Cole followed with back-to-back RBI doubles. The four runs were unearned on Pill’s tab after Derrik Gibson’s fielding error at third earlier in the inning.
After Richmond starter Matt Gage kept the B-Mets off the board through five innings, Smith finally broke through in the sixth. Following a pair of walks, Smith pulled a two-out single into right to cut the deficit in half.
Binghamton threatened in the seventh, but couldn’t break through against reliever Tyler Mizenko. With two aboard, pinch-hitter Victor Cruzado skipped a grounder up the middle. Christian Arroyo slid over from short to grab the bouncer, stepped on second and fired off-balance to first to complete the inning-ending double play.
Richmond closer Tyler Rogers inherited two runners in the eighth and coaxed a groundout from Colton Plaia. He returned with a perfect ninth to secure his 10th save of the season.
Gage (3-5) struck out a season-high eight and allowed two runs on five hits over 6-1/3 innings to collect his second straight victory.
Pill (3-7) allowed four unearned runs on six hits in six innings of work in the defeat. Pill struck out seven in his sixth straight winless start.
The B-Mets (27-35) conclude their three-game series against the Flying Squirrels on Thursday at 6:35 PM. RHP Rainy Lara takes the hill against RHP Tyler Beede.
