B-METS AVOID BROOMS WIN 3-1

B-Mets Avoid Brooms Behind Lara & Smith, 3-1
RICHMOND, VA – Rainy Lara fired seven scoreless innings and Dominic Smith drove in three runs to escort the Binghamton Mets past the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 3-1, on Thursday night at The Diamond. Binghamton snapped a three-game losing streak and avoided getting swept with the win in the series finale.
Smith opened his big night, and put the B-Mets on the board, in the fourth inning. The lefty-swinging first baseman kept a double down the left-field line fair by less than a foot to chase home Derrik Gibson and Phillip Evans. Smith struck again in the sixth by pulling a two-out single to right field, kicking Binghamton’s lead to three.
Lara cruised into the sixth inning without allowing a runner past second base. The righty needed just 52 pitches to get through five and retired ten straight Squirrels starting with Tyler Beede’s popout in the third.
His only test of the night came in the sixth after he walked back-to-back hitters following a fielding error by shortstop Derrik Gibson. With the tying run on first, Lara struck out Ricky Oropesa and Hunter Cole to preserve the three-run lead.
Christian Arroyo drove in Richmond’s only run with a double off Tim Peterson in the eighth. David Roseboom took over with Arroyo aboard and notched the final two outs of the inning, extending his inherited runners stranded streak to 18. Beck Wheeler worked a perfect ninth to lock down his fourth save of the season.
In his 50th career B-Mets start, Lara (4-6) allowed just two hits and struck out four in his seven innings. It was the second time in three starts Lara has gone seven innings without allowing a run.
Richmond starter Tyler Beede (4-4) allowed three runs on six hits over 7-2/3 innings in the defeat.
The B-Mets (28-36) continue their road trip in Trenton. They open a three-game series against the Thunder on Friday at 7:00 PM. RHP Josh Zieid makes his second start against LHP Daniel Camarena.
