B-METS LOSE 8-1

Slania Slays B-Mets in Series Opener, 8-1
RICHMOND, VA – Richmond starter Dan Slania blanked the Binghamton Mets into the sixth inning and drove in two runs of his own to lead the Flying Squirrels to a 8-1 series-opening win at The Diamond on Tuesday night. Phillip Evans compiled his fourth three-hit game as a B-Met and extended his hitting streak to 12 games in the losing effort.
The Squirrels gave Slania support early by throwing four runs on the board with two outs in the first inning against Mickey Jannis. Myles Schroeder walked with the bases loaded, Ricky Oropesa sprinted home on a passed ball and Ali Castillo capped the frame with a two-run single to left.
Richmond and their two-out offense struck again in the fifth. Following a pair of a singles and Jannis’ sixth walk, Slania pulled an 0-2 pitch through the hole into left to plate two runs.
Slania prevented the B-Mets from getting any runners past second in his 5-2/3 scoreless innings. The righty threw a career-high 99 pitches and exited with two aboard in the sixth. Jake Smith took over and snared Colton Plaia’s line drive comebacker to keep the B-Mets off the board.
Binghamton scratched out their only run in the seventh after Smith walked the bases loaded. Evans poked a single into right to chase home LJ Mazzilli before Jayce Boyd rolled into an inning-ending double play.
Jannis (1-6) allowed six runs on seven hits and walked a season-high six over five innings in the loss. The defeat extended the righty’s winless streak to eleven starts. Kevin McGowan struck out five over two scoreless innings to highlight Binghamton’s pitching tab.
Slania (5-4) struck out four and allowed four hits to earn his second win in as many starts.
The B-Mets (27-35) continue their only visit to Virginia on Wednesday at 6:35 PM. RHP Tyler Pill faces LHP Matt Gage in the middle game of the series. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.
