Late rallies by the RailRiders offense fall just short in Saturday loss to IronPigs
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MOOSIC, PA (August 3, 2019) – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders fell to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 11-8 Saturday night at PNC Field. Tyler Wade, Ryan McBroom and Mandy Alvarez all had multi-hit games as the RailRiders pounded 13 hits in the contest.
Lehigh Valley got on the board first in the top of the third from a three-run home run by Phil Gosselin. Deivy Grullon added a solo home run in the inning, establishing a 4-0 lead. The IronPigs added three more runs in the top of the sixth inning, extending their advantage 7-0.
JoJo Romero worked six scoreless for Lehigh Valley, but allowed back-to-back singles to McBroom and Alvarez in the bottom of the seventh. Fernando Salas was brought in from the bullpen and allowed a three-run home run to Gosuke Katoh, cutting the IronPigs lead to 7-3.
In the top of the eighth, Lehigh Valley answered with four runs against Will Carter to extend their advantage to 11-3. In the bottom of the inning, Alvarez smacked a three-run home run to left off Salas to get the RailRiders to 11-6.
Wade provided a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth to cut the IronPigs lead to 11-8, but the rally came up short as Edgar Garcia closed out the game. Romero (3-2) picked up the win for Lehigh Valley, working 6-plus innings and allowing two runs, while Brody Koerner (4-2) was charged the loss for the RailRiders. All nine players in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's lineup had at least one hit.
The RailRiders conclude the three-game series against Lehigh Valley Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
