Attachments1:00 PM (12 minutes ago)
Corey Oswalt was named International League Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season after leading Syracuse to two victories (Danny Tripodi).

For the second time this season, Syracuse Mets right-handed pitcher Corey Oswalt has been named International League Pitcher of the Week. Most recently, Oswalt won the award for the week of August 19-25. The 25-year-old made two starts this past week. Last Monday, Oswalt threw seven scoreless innings at Lehigh Valley while allowing just four hits and no walks in a game that Syracuse needed Oswalt’s best as part of a 1-0 victory for the Mets. Then on Sunday, the San Diego native collected his tenth win of the season, throwing five and 2/3 innings with four strikeouts, only four hits allowed, and two runs scored against him in an 11-3 Syracuse win over Rochester.

Oswalt was also named International League Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 15-21 when he combined to strike out 12 batters and allow just one earned run in 12 innings pitched over two starts during that week.

This is the fourth time in Oswalt’s professional career that he has won a weekly league award. In addition to the two International League Pitcher of the Week honors this year, Oswalt was named New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week on July 21, 2014 when he was with the Brooklyn Cyclones, and he was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week on August 6, 2017 when he was with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies.

With Oswalt earning this week’s IL Pitcher of the Week honors, Syracuse has claimed five weekly league awards this year. Chris Mazza was named International League Pitcher of the Week twice this season (May 26th and June 16th), Drew Gagnon was named International League Pitcher of the Week on August 11th, and now Corey Oswalt has won the award twice (July 21st and August 26th).

KE’BRYAN HAYES & COREY OSWALT NAMED INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
The International League announced today that Indianapolis third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes and Syracuse right-handed starter Corey Oswalt have been named the League’s Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period covering August 19-25. Indianapolis and Syracuse are the first two teams to have claimed five weekly awards this season. Hayes follows Mitch Keller (2x), Dario Agrazal, and Alex McRae. Oswalt is now a two-time Pitcher of the Week. The other Mets to have been so honored this season are Chris Mazza (2x) and Drew Gagnon.

KE’BRYAN HAYES, Indianapolis Indians IL BATTER OF THE WEEK

Ke’Bryan Hayes banged out twelve hits over his past six games and led the International League last week with a .522 batting average. Last Monday he collected his tenth home run of the season in dramatic fashion, as his two-run blast with two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning tied Indy’s contest with Lehigh Valley which the Indians eventually won in the 10th. He finished the week strong as well, collecting multiple hits in four straight games including a 4-for-5 night on Friday to lead the Tribe past Louisville, 5-2. Hayes has been one of his club’s most consistent offensive producers this season. He leads the Indians with twelve steals and is among the team’s top three players in most categories including hits, doubles, triples, home runs, RBI, and runs scored.

22-year-old Ke’Bryan Hayes is in his fifth season playing professionally and his first above the Double-A level. In 2018 he was an All-Star in the Double-A Eastern League and has been rated by both MLB.com and Baseball America as one of the top prospects in the Pirates farm system. Hayes is a native of Tomball, Texas.
COREY OSWALT, Syracuse Mets IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK

The Syracuse Mets are storming towards a potential division championship thanks in no small part to the right arm of Corey Oswalt, who delivered two more wins this week to push his total on the season to ten, tied for most in the International League. Last Monday he was masterful in a 1-0 shutout of Lehigh Valley, tossing 7.0 scoreless innings while allowing just four hits and no walks. He took the hill Sunday against Rochester and was victorious once again, limiting the Red Wings to two runs over 5.2 frames as the Mets rolled to an 11-3 triumph that pulled the club to within a half-game of the division lead.

Corey Oswalt, who turns 26 next week, is in his eighth season pitching professionally and just his second season playing higher than the Double-A level. He is a veteran of 19 games at the Major League level with New York (twelve starts). Oswalt is a native of San Diego, California.
