New team leaders in Emerald, Sapphire divisions at 2019 USBC Women’s Championships
The number to beat in Emerald Team at the 2019 United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships jumped May 24 at Northrock Lanes, while the lead changed hands in Sapphire Team on May 29.
RAI off NE of Ravenna, Nebraska, was consistent on the way to the top spot in Emerald Team, rolling games of 676, 675 and 676 for a 2,027 total, while the members of 4 for Fun of Bloomfield, New Mexico, used games of 614, 658 and 587 for a 1,859 effort in Wichita, Kansas.
For 7 of Bozeman, Montana, previously held the Emerald lead with 1,998, while Starlites of Alexandria, Minnesota, sat atop the Sapphire standings with 1,829.
Lynn Bedke led the way for RAI off NE with a 555 series and was joined by Laurie Johnson (515), Lisa Paitz (482) and Elaine Behrendt (475).
Rosie Martinez paced 4 for Fun on the way to the top of the leaderboard with a 511 set. She was joined by Beth Gillitzer (490), Sheri Sexton (472) and Nelita Wilson (386).
Emerald Team consists of bowlers with combined entering averages of 575-649, and Sapphire Team includes bowlers with combined entering averages of 574 and below.
Washington bowlers take Emerald Doubles lead at Northrock Lanes
Sonjia Shoemaker of Battle Ground, Washington, and Debie Watkins of Vancouver, Washington, edged their way into the Emerald Doubles lead May 24 at the 2019 USBC Women’s Championships.
The pair posted a 1,118 total to surpass the 1,114 score posted by Margaret Randall of Pine Valley, New York, and Vickie Tobias of Bath, New York, on April 22.
Watkins led the way with games of 203, 167 and 199 for a 569 series, and Shoemaker added 157, 169 and 223 for a 549 set.
Emerald Doubles features bowlers with combined entering averages of 320-349.
A look ahead
Marcie Baker of Fredericktown, Missouri, will celebrate her 50th USBC Women’s Championships appearance June 3 at 6:30 p.m. Eastern at Northrock Lanes.
The 87-year-old right-hander made her tournament debut at the 1968 event in San Antonio and has visited 33 cities and 23 states throughout her journey to 50 appearances.
