Spiedies fall to Pork Roll in “Sandwich Showdown”
Binghamton, NY – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies ( Binghamton Spiedies) fell 5-2 to the Trenton Thunder (Thunder Pork Roll) on Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium, as the two teams have split the first two games of the four-game series. Trenton took a 3-2 lead in the 8th on a sacrifice fly to right by Chris Gittens that scored Brandon Wagner from third. Wagner reached on a leadoff triple on a fly ball to center that Kevin Kaczmarski lost in the evening sky. Trenton scored their first two runs on a sac fly from Ben Ruta in the first and a safety squeeze from Kyle Holder in the sixth.
Barrett Barnes hit a long solo homer to left in the fourth, his third of the year, that tied the game at one. Mike Paez hit an RBI double to left-center in the seventh off of reliever Matt Wivinis that scored Will Toffey from first and tied the game at two. Trenton padded their one-run advantage in the ninth on a two-run homer from Wendell Rijo off of David Roseboom.
Rumble Ponies (26-17) righty Mickey Jannis went 5 and a third frames allowing just 1 hit, 2 unearned runs, but walked five while striking out seven in the no-decision. Jannis still has not allowed an earned run all year with the Ponies. Trenton (28-18) righthander Deivi Garcia was terrific, allowing 4 hits and 1 run over 6, with no walks and ten strikeouts.
The two teams continue their four-game series Sunday evening at NYSEG Stadium, with first pitch at 6:35 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and on the Binghamton Rumble Ponies channel on TuneIn. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 6:20
POSTGAME NOTES: In the six games they’ve played thus far, the Rumble Ponies and Thunder have each won 3 apiece…Trenton retakes first place in the Eastern Division with a half-game lead over Binghamton…Ponies DH Will Toffey was 2-3, with a run scored and a walk.
