Syracuse, NY (May 17, 2019) - Syracuse catcher René Rivera hit two home runs but the Mets fell to the Columbus Clippers, 14-3, on Friday night at NBT Bank Stadium. This was the third time this season where one Syracuse player hit two homers in a game.
Syracuse (23-17) got on the board in the bottom of the third. Rivera stayed red hot, extending his hitting streak to ten with his second home run of the year, trimming the lead to four, 5-1.
In the fifth, Guillorme and Rivera each singled to start the frame. After two strikeouts, Grégor Blanco singled to right field to score Guillorme and make it a 5-2 ballgame.
Columbus broke the game open in the sixth. Hasse singled and Papi doubled to begin the inning. Corey Taylor came into the game for Syracuse, and after a strikeout and intentional walk, Mathias singled to bring home Hasse for a 6-2 lead. Flaherty then grounded into a force out at second base, enough to score Papi from third and extend the lead to five, 7-2. Brandon Barnes capped the inning with a single through the left side for an 8-2 Clippers advantage.
In the seventh, Hasse led off with a line-drive home run to left field to push the score to 9-2. Two batters later, Eric Stamets tripled, and Allen singled Stamets home for a tenth Columbus run.
Rivera’s huge day continued in the bottom of the seventh with his second home run of the day to make the deficit 10-3.
The Clippers added runs in the ninth. Columbus scored four runs thanks to a wild pitch, an error, and two sacrifice flies for a 14-3 edge.
Syracuse and Columbus continue their three-game series with the second game on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
