RailRiders Swept in Impromptu Doubleheader

SWB Advantage Sliced to 5.5 Games in IL North

Rochester, N.Y. – The SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) dropped a pair of games to the host Rochester Red Wings (Minnesota Twins) at Frontier Field on Wednesday night, 5-4 and 1-0. The opener was the conclusion of Tuesday’s suspended game. The RailRiders (80-49) saw their lead in the IL North fall to 5.5 games. The Red Wings (75-55) have won three of their last four games against SWB.

The conclusion of the suspended game picked up in the visiting fourth with a 4-4 draw on the board. Rochester plated the game-deciding tally in the eighth on a two-out double by Leonardo Reginatto that pushed J.B. Shuck across the dish. Reliever Alex Wimmers (7-3) got the win. Giovanny Gallegos (4-2) suffered the loss.

The nightcap proved a pitchers’ duel between SWB lefty Nestor Cortes and Rochester right-hander Felix Jorge. Cortes struck out nine over 5.1 scoreless innings. Jorge, in his Triple-A debut, struck out seven and fired six shutout innings. Reginatto again played the role of hero. He belted a two-out solo homer to left, his third of the year, for the walk-off win in the seventh. Michael Tonkin (4-2) earned the win while Ben Heller (5-4) took the loss.

The four-game series concludes at 1:35 p.m. on Thursday. Southpaw Jordan Montgomery is scheduled to start in his first SWB appearance of the season. Rochester plans to counter with right-hander Chris Heston (0-1, 7.97). The RailRiders return home on Friday, Aug. 25 to host the Syracuse Chiefs (Washington Nationals) at 7:05 p.m. The Glow-in-the-Park Friday will sport the RailRiders in their neon-green-and-black best. The first 2,500 fans through the gates will receive a Gary Sanchez Baby Bomber bobblehead courtesy of Dickey’s Barbecue Pit. The contest will feature the LEGO Tour. OFF THE RAILS:

MLB rehabber Greg Bird went 0-for-1 in game one with a sac fly before play was suspended on Tuesday. Donovan Solano pinch hit for him upon the resumption of the game. Bird started the second affair and played all seven innings at first base. He went 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts and grounded into a double play.

The rehabbing Starlin Castro went 2-for-5 with a run scored in game one. He did not play in the nightcap.

The opener endured a 2:28 rain delay between the 46 minutes of pause before it was suspended on Tuesday and more rain on Wednesday.

SWB has not scored a run in 14 consecutive innings.
