MARY FEUSNER IS BACK IN THE GAME

GRAHAMSVILLE--Mary Feusner is back in the game.

Following her retirement from teaching and coaching in June 2014 Feusner acknowledged in late May 2014 following a Tri-Valley Bears varsity softball defeat in the sectionals to Tuxedo that she "sincerely hoped to be coaching next year."
She applied for the coaching vacancy but lady luck was not to be as the Tri-Valley school board hired a new coach from within their teaching ranks.
Her patience has been rewarded as a vacancy for head coach of the Tri-Valley varsity girls soccer team was posted this summer with Feusner getting the nod. The former coach who made a decision this year not to coach soccer was Claire Moore.
"I retired from teaching in June 2014 and taught Health and Physical Education for 37 years, all at Tri-Valley," Feusner noted.
Her impressive coaching career at Tri-Valley included varsity girls' soccer from the fall of 1978 through the fall of 2013....that's 36 seasons and 629 matches (360 wins...231 losses...38 ties) and coached softball from the spring of 1978 through the spring of 2014 (37 seasons).
Her first two seasons she assisted Coach Fred Booker and became head coach in 1980 coaching a total of 623 games, 350 wins and 273 losses.
Feusner also did a one of one-half seasons stint as the Junior Varsity girls' basketball coach in the mid 1980's when the former coach suffered injuries from a car accident and could not continue
"Soccer happens to rank #2 on my list of sports to coach," Coach Feusner said while adding "you can guess what my all-time favorite sport is."
If we would have to guess......it's softball.
Career coaching highlights in soccer for Feusner include the following:
  1. Qualified for the state soccer tournament in 1992 and 1993.
  2. Participated in Sectionals- Class C & D for a combined 30 seasons.
  3. Won 14 Tri-Valley Invitational Tournaments.
The new 2017 Tri-Valley girls varsity soccer coach noted "that I am proud of the fact that my teams qualified for the NYSPHSAA Academic Award a total of 20 times since its inception."
"I coached Nicole Legenos (class of 1993) who at the time was the NYS scoring champion with 172 goals in her career and she played six seasons on the varsity and missed all but four games of her junior year with an injury....perhaps that total would have been higher," Coach Feusner said.
She also coached numerous all-stars and players of the year during her coaching career.
Softball coaching highlights for Feusner include:
  1. Winning the Class D Softball State Championship in 1986 (Tonya Ackerley Martin was our pitcher).
  2. Qualified for the state softball tournament in 1985.
  3. Won Sectionals four times.
  4. Won seven Western Sullivan League championships.
  5. The teams I coached qualified for the NYSPHSAA Academic Award a total of 11 times since its inception.
  6. Fortunate to have coached numerous all-stars and players of the year.
Coach Feusner has also been a softball official since 1984 and has officiated at more recreation league softball games than high school games.
She did umpire at the state tournament when it was held at West Point.
Feusner is a charter member of the Sullivan County Softball Umpires Association along with Kurt Scheibe, Danny Clark and Paul Orr.
The soccer season started with practice on August 14 and will continue through mid-November if a team is skilled enough to survive Sectional and Regional play.
