PBA two-handed star Anthony Simonsen defeated New Jersey middle school history teacher Amy Brehm, 258-220, to win the $100,000 top prize in the second of three Bowlero Elite Series tournaments featuring professional bowlers versus Bowlero amateur league bowlers.
Simonsen, who won the professional side of the Elite Series bracket by defeating three-time PWBA titlist Stefanie Johnson, was invited to participate in the special event along with fellow PBA stars EJ Tackett, Norm Duke, Bill O’Neill and Jesper Svensson. PWBA was represented by Johnson, Mexico’s Sandra Gongora and Latvia’s Diana Zavjalova.
In unrelated news, Simonsen has withdrawn from the PBA China Tiger Cup because of a previous business commitment and will be replaced in the exclusive eight-man field of PBA stars by fellow two-hander Kyle Troup, the next qualifier in line to make the trip. Simonsen was the No. 3 qualifier in competition points earned during the nine-event FloBowling PBA Summer Tour; Troup finished ninth in points.
The PBA’s inaugural trip to China is set for Nov. 19-22 for a singles competition including a field of Chinese bowlers along with a U.S. vs. China team event. The American contingent will include points leader Sean Rash, Tackett, Jason Sterner, AJ Johnson, O’Neill, Kyle Sherman, Tommy Jones and Troup.
NEW KUWAIT BOWLING CENTER TO HOST FINAL PBA-WORLD BOWLING TOUR EVENT
The newly renovated Kuwait Bowling Centre will host the final PBA International-World Bowling Tour event on the 2019 Go Bowling! PBA Tour schedule Oct. 31-Nov. 6. The tournament also is the final qualifying event for the World Bowling Tour Men’s and Women’s Finals that will follow the Kuwait Open in the same facility.
The Kuwait Open will feature a prize fund of $218,000 with a $50,000 first prize. Other events remaining on the PBA-WBT schedule for 2019 are the Thailand Open, Sept. 27-Oct. 4 at Blu-O Paragon in Bangkok, and the U.S. Open, Oct. 23-30, at Victory Lanes Family Entertainment Center in Mooresville, N.C.
The 2019 World Bowling Tour Finals, culminating 12 months of international competition, will feature the top three male and top three female athletes from the 2019 WBT points list as of the completion of the Kuwait Open. For the first time, the WBT Finals also will include one male and one female from each of the three World Bowling zones (Asian, European and Pan American), expanding the field of contenders to six men and six women. Each zone will determine which of its athletes qualify for the finals.
The current WBT men’s top five points leaders are Americans Anthony Simonsen (2,712 points), Andrew Anderson (2,276), EJ Tackett (2,136), Kyle Troup (2,040) and England’s Stuart Williams (1,984). The top five women in points are Danielle McEwan (4,765), Liz Johnson (3,784), Indonesia’s Tannya Roumimper, Poland’s Daria Pajak and Colombia’s Clara Guerrero.
Walter Ray Williams Jr. and Pete Weber, two of the PBA’s Hall of Fame legends, are included in an expansive “Upper Deck Goodwin Champions” collection of 150-plus trading cards featuring personalities from the worlds of sports, entertainment, politics, theater and more. The Upper Deck “Goodwin Champions” collections are hobby boxes with a mix of card styles. The boxes come with three “hits” which can be autographs, memorabilia, relics, manufactured patches or 3-D lenticular inserts. Collectors can also expect several standard chase and mini cards as well.
PBA Hall of Famer Chris Barnes from Double Oak, Texas defeated Dylan Burns of Garden City, Kan., to win the sixth annual PBA Grand Casino Resort & Hotel Southwest Invitational at FireLake Bowling Center in Shawnee, Okla., Sunday.
Barnes, who earned his 28th PBA Regional title and the $4,000 winner’s check, won by a healthy 48-pin margin. He fell behind early in the final match as Burns started with four strikes, but Barnes responded with his own string of four, striking from the seventh frame through the 10th as Burns ran into all sorts of issues, helping Barnes to a 226-178 victory.
After 12 games of qualifying, both players received byes to the Round of 8 with Barnes the top qualifier and Burns right behind. In the best two-of-three-game Round of 8, Barnes defeated Keith Lesko from Prosper, Texas, 2-0, while Burns advanced with a 2-0 win over Austin Boulds of Creal Springs, Ill. In the semifinal round, Barnes squeaked by Anthony Lavery-Spahr from Pasadena, Texas, 245-231, while Burns eliminated Houston’s Shawn Maldonado, 219-203.
• Michael Davidson of Versailles, Ohio defeated Michael Martell of Brooklyn, N.Y., in a three-game total pins match, 640-617, to win his second PBA Regional title in the Boss Snow Plows/Ebonite Central/Midwest Open at PinHeads in Fishers, Ind., Sunday.
Davidson, who earned $3,000, downed Chris Colella of Indianapolis, 658-548, while Martell eliminated Patrick Dombrowski of Parma, Ohio, 646-568, in the semifinal round to set up the championship match.

• PBA Regional activity scheduled for the Sept. 20-22 weekend include the PBA/PBA50 Over/Under Doubles at Millsboro Lanes in Millsboro, Del.; the EZ Bowl Central Open in Bluffton, Ind.; the Odessa Southwest Super Regional at Diamond Lanes in Odessa, Texas, and a tripleheader including the PBA Paradise Lanes Northwest/West Open, PBA50 Paradise Lanes Gary Mage Northwest/West Senior Open (both presented by 900 Global) plus the Jeanne Naccarato Women’s Open in Tacoma, Wash. On Saturday, Sept. 21, Ten Pin Alley in Fitchburg, Wis., also will host the Ten Pin Alley Midwest Open.
