RAILRIDERS WIN 6-3

Torres’ First Triple-A Homer Lifts RailRiders to Win
Heller Fires 1-2-3 Ninth, Posts Save

Rochester, N.Y. – The SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) doubled up the host Rochester Red Wings (Minnesota Twins) in their series opener at Frontier Field on Monday night, 6-3. The RailRiders (32-22) have won 16 of 22 overall and three straight in the season series with the Red Wings (25-27).

Down 2-0, the game changed in the sixth. With two on and one out, 20-year-old prospect Gleyber Torres rocked his first Triple-A homer off the scoreboard in left-center field for a 3-2 lead. His big fly chased veteran starter Yohan Pino (0-2).

SWB piggybacker Domingo German (2-1) took the baton from there. Pitching in relief for the first time since he was in the Rookie GCL with the Marlins in 2012, German gave up just one unearned run over 5.2 innings to post the win. He struck out seven, walked two and gave up just four hits, all singles.

The RailRiders salted their lead with three runs in the seventh. They all went unearned on reliever D.J. Baxendale thanks to a pair of Rochester errors. Tyler Wade delivered a sac fly in the inning while Torres earned his fourth RBI with a sharp single over shortstop.

Ben Heller slammed the door shut with a perfect ninth inning for his third save.

Starter Bryan Mitchell gave up two runs over 2.1 innings on three hits, no walks and one strikeout. Tommy Field’s sac fly plated Zack Granite in the first while a wild pitch by German gave Granite, an inherited runner, the dish in the third.

The three-game series continues at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday night. SWB right-hander Chance Adams (3-1, 1.57) will face a to-be-announced hurler. The RailRiders’ next homestand gets underway on Tuesday, June 13 with a 6:35 p.m. start against the Red Wings. The $2 Tuesday sports $2 lawn tickets and $2 tallboys, presented by La Tolteca. It will also be a Bark in the Park game. For tickets or more information, please call 570-969-BALL (2255) or visit swbrailriders.com.
