Gary Sanchez Falls Triple Shy of the Cycle

Moosic, Pa. – The SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/ New York Yankees) dropped their first extra-inning decision at home in nearly a year on Tuesday night, falling 4-3 to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs at PNC Field. The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for the RailRiders (53-33) and the team slipped to 4-1 in overtime games this season. The IronPigs (49-37) won for the fourth time in nine tries against SWB in the 2016 IronRail Series.

The last defeat at PNC Field for SWB that involved extras was a 6-4 final in 12 innings versus the Syracuse Chiefs on July 8, 2015. The RailRiders had not dropped an overtime game since the 2015 regular season finale at Syracuse, a 5-4 final in 11 innings.

Frank Hermann (5-1) kept the RailRIders off the scoreboard in the ninth to earn the win in relief. Giovanny Gallegos (3-1) shouldered the loss after surrendering the game-winning homer to J.P. Crawford, his first at Triple-A, to lead off the 10th. Edward Mujica retired SWB 1-2-3 in the last of the 10th for his International League-leading 22nd save.

The game started off well for the RailRiders. Ben Gamel smoked his fourth home run of the year out to right leading off the opening frame. With one out, Aaron Judge walked and trotted home when Gary Sanchez belted his ninth round-tripper out to right for a 3-0 lead.

The IronPigs rallied with two runs off starter Phil Coke in the second inning and scored the tying run on a Nick Williams sacrifice fly to center in the fifth.

The RailRiders had scoring chances throughout, but finished 1-for-10 with men in scoring position. The team stranded seven on base, including six in prime real estate.

The RailRiders begin a two-game series against the Buffalo Bisons on Wednesday, July 6 at 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Dietrich Enns (2-1, 0.96) is scheduled to face southpaw John Anderson (1-2, 4.91). The RailRiders will celebrate CHAMP’s birthday and give away 1,000 CHAMP foam headbands, presented by PALCS.
