PBA TONY REYES COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD NOMINATIONS DUE NOV. 22
Nominations are now being accepted for one of the PBA’s most prestigious awards, the PBA Tony Reyes Community Service award, which is presented annually to a current PBA member who does extraordinary community service, charitable and/or educational contributions over the course of a PBA Tour season. To be eligible, the nominee must be a PBA member in good standing.
The community service award was first presented in 2013, a year after the PBA Tour champion died as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near his home in northern California. Reyes, one of the PBA’s most popular players, was a former collegiate All-American bowler, an eight-time PBA Regional title winner and the 18th player in PBA history to bowl a nationally-televised 300 game.
Following Reyes’ death on Sept. 28, 2012, a group of his fellow competitors gathered in front of a tribute masking unit created in Reyes’ honor for the PBA World Series of Bowling at South Point in Las Vegas.

DICK RITGER REFLECTS ON PBA’S “MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT”
“When Don Johnson collapsed on the alley after leaving the 10-pin standing to finish with a 299 in the finals of the 1970 Firestone Tournament of Champions, Dick Ritger was there to pick him up.”
That statement by Bob Burrows summarized Burrows’ interview with 80-year-old PBA Hall of Famer Dick Ritger at his northern Wisconsin home, published in the Hudson (Wis.) Star-Observer, in which Ritger addressed his role in the event that was ranked No. 1 in the PBA’s 60 Most Memorable Moments, celebrated during the PBA’s 60th anniversary season in 2018.
Ritger, Johnson’s victim in that famous match, was sitting on the bench watching the historic almost-perfect shot unfold, and he related his recollections about Johnson’s 299 game and his own career in Burrows’ feature story (https://www.rivertowns.net/
Included in the interview is Ritger’s personal reflection of a memorable perfect game of his own:
"I bowled a 300 at the Miller Tournament in Milwaukee one year and you know what I got for a prize? Beer for a year," he said. "Fifty-two cases. I didn't drink so we donated the money to the Milwaukee Children's hospital."

Speaking of PBA bowling games, note that Concrete Software’s wildly-popular PBA Bowling Challenge for mobile devices now has been downloaded more than 27.6 million times, including almost 2.5 million times in 2019 alone. New players joining the PBA Bowling Challenge roster include two-hander Kyle Troup and 2019 PBA Playoffs champion Kris Prather.
Tom Daugherty of Riverview, Fla., defeated Giorgio Clinaz of Orlando, Fla., 220-190, to win the third annual PBA Albany Strikers South Open presented by MOTIV at Albany Strikers Lanes in Albany, Ga.
In winning his 16th PBA Regional title, Daugherty qualified in the number one position for the four-man stepladder finals with a 17-game total of 3,937. Clinaz advanced to the title match by disposing of PBA Tour titlist Connor Pickford of Charlotte, N.C., in the opening match, 256-220, and easily defeating Trevor Roberts of Crystal River, Fla., 213-184.
In the title match Clinaz needed a double and nine pins in the 10th frame to win but came up short when he left a split that handed the $2,500 first prize to Daugherty,
• PJ Haggerty of Roseville, Calif., won eight of his 10 matches to post a winning 18-game total of 4,142 pins Sunday in the PBA Battle of Black Oak Casino West Open at Black Oak Lanes in Tuolumne, Calif., picking up his 13th PBA Regional title.
Haggerty, who earned $2,000, defeated Christopher Tuholski of Troutdale, Ore., by 284 pins for the win. Tuholski had a 5-5 match play record and 3,858 pins.
• Ryan Shafer of Horseheads, N.Y. compiled a 7-1 match play record on his way to a 61-pin victory over Brian Boghosian of Springfield, Mass. in the PBA50 Brian LeClair’s Revolutions Pro Shop Eastern Open at Boulevard Bowl in Schenectady, N.Y., Sunday.
Shafer qualified second, which gave him a bye into the round robin finals. He went into the final position round match holding a seven-pin lead over Boghosian, meaning the winner of the match would receive 30 bonus pins and win the title. Shafer’s 237-213 victory produced the final 61-pin margin.
The win was Shafer’s 31st overall PBA Regional title, but his first in two years. He earned $1,500.
• Jeff Campbell of Sioux Falls, S.D., took an early lead and never trailed in defeating 2019 PBA Rookie of the Year Kamron Doyle of Brentwood, Tenn., 180-173, to win the PBA Champion Bowl Midwest Open presented by Storm in Ottumwa, Iowa, Sunday for his first PBA Regional title and the $2,000 first prize.
In the first match of the three-player stepladder finals, Campbell defeated non-PBA member Tim Gruendler of St. Louis, 209-188, to advance to the title match.
• On the PBA Regional calendar for the Oct. 11-13 weekend are the PBA50/PBA60 Park Centre Lanes Central Doubles presented by Columbia 300 in North Canton, Ohio, and the PBA Japan Region’s Sound Bowl Cup Scorpion Open in Ryugasaki, Japan.
• PBA Regional tournaments scheduled for the Oct. 18-20 weekend include the PBA50 Timber Lanes Open in Oxford, Pa.; the PBA50 Waxahachie Southwest Open at Hilltop Lanes in Waxahachie, Texas; the PBA and PBA50 Northwest/West Opens presented by Dick’s Pro Shop and Boulder Falls Inn at Linn Lanes in Lebanon, Ore.; the Greater Jackson Central Open at Jax’s 60 in Jackson, Mich., and the Bowl-A-Vard Lanes Midwest Open in Madison, Wis.
• Closing out the October PBA Regional calendar will be the South Point West Challenge presented by MOTIV and the South Point Member/Non-Member Doubles presented by Hammer at South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas.
