Gades Put Baby Bombers to Sweep  Renegades Run Away From Sloppy Yankees

WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY—Four errors and six hit batsmen buoyed the Hudson Valley Renegades to an easy 16-4 win over the Staten Island Yankees Friday evening in front of 4,382 fans from Dutchess Stadium.  The 16 runs were a single-game season-high, while Hudson Valley twice set a season record for runs in an inning with six in the third and seven in the seventh.  The sweep was also the first of the season for the Renegades as well.  It was the Renegades’ seventh win in their last eight games.

The teams started the scoring early with each squad picking up three in the first.  Staten Island used the long ball in their half.  With one out, designated hitter Jake Sanford hit an infield single to short before third baseman Andres Chaparro (1) belted a two-run homerun to left to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead.  First baseman Spencer Henson (1) came up next and drilled a solo homer that hit the top of the centerfield wall and bounced over as the back-to-back jacks gave Staten Island a 3-0 lead.

Hudson Valley started their half of the first with a walk to centerfielder Garrett Hiott.  Shortstop Nick Sogard then reached on a single to right before rightfielder Hill Alexander skied a double off the rightfield wall to score Hiott and move Alexander to third.  First baseman Jacson McGowan came up next and grounded to short to bring in Sogard, before designated hitter Luis Trevino stepped in two batters later and grounded a two-out RBI single to center to score McGowan from second and tie the game at three.

Staten Island would retake the lead with a run in the third.  With two out, back-to-back walks from Hudson Valley reliever Joe LaSorsa put runners at first and second.  Leftfielder Matt Pita came up next and lined an RBI single to left to score Henson from second and give the Yankees a 4-3 lead.

However, the Renegades would use a big six-run third to take the lead for good.  Sogard led off with a walk, stole second, then scored on a single by McGowan.  With two out and McGowan at first, Trevino was hit by a pitch for the first of three times, which allowed catcher Jordyn Muffley to ground a single to right to bring in McGowan.  Third baseman Luis Arcendo followed and brought in Trevino on an RBI single to make the score 6-4.  Leftfielder Pedro Diaz was then hit with a pitch to load the bases with two away.  Hiott came up next and looped a two-run double to right-center.  Trevino tried to score from first on the play, and was going to be thrown out at home, however Yankees catcher Ryan Lidge couldn’t handle the throw and Diaz scored to give the Renegades a 9-4 lead.

Things stayed that way until the seventh when more hit batters and Staten Island errors turned the game into a laugher.  Two hit men and a walk loaded the bases to begin the inning.  Muffley grounded to Chaparro at third, however the throw home was wide of the plate for an error.  Arcendo came up next and grounded to second baseman Ezequiel Duran who threw wildly to second on the fielder’s choice attempt.  With the bases still loaded, Diaz grounded into another fielder’s choice to third to score a run and make the score 12-4.  Hiott followed and became the third hit batter of the inning to reload the bases.  Sogard lined a double into the rightfield corner to score two more runs before Alexander capped the scoring with a two-run single to right to make the score 16-4 as Hudson Valley brought 12 to the plate and scored seven.

Getting the win for the Renegades was LaSorsa (3-0) who gave up a run on three hits in four innings.  The loss went to Yankees starter Anderson Munoz (2-2) after he allowed nine runs on six hits over 2.2 frames.

The Renegades collected 10 hits in the game.  Sogard went 2-4 with a double, two RBI, a stolen base and three runs scored.  Alexander finished 2-5 with a double, run and three RBI.

The Yankees finished with seven hits.  Leading the attack was Sanford who went 2-4 with a double and run.

Hudson Valley now heads to Niles, OH to begin a three-game road series against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers tomorrow in a 7:05 start.  The Renegades will send right-hander Daiveyon Whittle (0-0, 0.45 ERA) to the hill against fellow-righty Liam Jenkins (0-2, 6.35 ERA) of the Scrappers.

The Renegades return home on Wednesday, July 17 when they take on the Brooklyn Cyclones in game one of a three-game set.  Firstpitch is scheduled for 7:05.  Tickets are on sale and can be purchased online at hvrenegades.com, in person at the Dutchess Stadium ticket window, or by calling the ticket office at 845-838-0094.
