MOOSIC, Pa. (July 26, 2018) – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders split the doubleheader with the Charlotte Knights on Thursday afternoon winning game one 5-4 and dropping game two with a score of 8-2.

In the first game of the day, play picked up with the RailRiders trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth with no recorded outs. Runners were at first and third and Tyler Austin was at the plate. At the start of the resumption, Austin struck out and Billy McKinney walked. Mike Ford also walked to bring home Abiatal Avelino. Shane Robinson then hit into a fielder’s choice that plated Mark Payton and tied the game at three. Rey Navarro walked to load the bases once again and Bruce Caldwell singled through the three-four-hole to score two more runs that gave Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a 5-3 lead.

Charlotte responded in the top of the seventh as Dustin Garneau hit a solo shot to put the Knights within one, but it was not enough as they failed to score anymore after the seventh. The RailRiders won with a final score of 5-4.

In the second game of the day, Charlotte jumped on the board in the top of the first as Jake Elmore doubled and Eloy Jimémez homered to give the Knights a quick 2-0 lead. The RailRiders responded in the bottom of the second as Robinson singled and Payton hit his third home run of the season to tie the game at two apiece.

Charlotte took the lead again in the top of the third as Ryan LaMarre and Jake Elmore singled. LaMarre delay-stole third and then was plated by a base-hit off the bat of Matt Skole. José Rondón hit a sacrifice fly to deep right field to score Elmore from third. In the top of the fourth, Patrick Leonard doubled and LaMarre snagged a two-base-hit of his own to score Leonard from second. Elmore picked up his third hit of the game with a single that plated LaMarre and gave Charlotte a 6-2 lead.

The Knights’ scoring continued in the top of the fifth with a Trayce Thompson solo home run. In the top of the seventh Jiménez doubled and later scored on a double by Rondón giving Charlotte an 8-2 lead which would hold as the final score.
