COLUMBUS, OHIO (July 22, 2018) –
A pair of home runs by the Columbus Clippers helped provide all the punch Sunday afternoon in a 5-0 win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.

Columbus held a 1-0 lead after an inning of play thanks to a one-out sacrifice fly to plate Todd Hankins who had tripled off Nestor Cortes. One inning later, the decisive blow was delivered by the Clippers from Nellie Rodriguez. Cortes issued walks to Yu Chang and Eric Stamets in the inning, and with two outs Rodriguez flexed his muscle with an opposite-field blast that flew between the batter’s eye and video board in right-centerfield, landed on the road and bounced into an adjacent parking lot. Columbus’ lead was suddenly 4-0.

Five Columbus pitchers combined to limit the RailRiders offense to five hits, including only two hits over the first six innings. Adam Plutko allowed a double to Mike Ford in the second as part of 4.0 innings of one-hit ball with five strikeouts. Andrew Miller, an MLB All-Star who was pitching with the Clippers on a Major League rehab assignment, gave up a single to Bruce Caldwell in the fifth inning in his second appearance of the weekend series.

Caldwell finished 2-for-4 to raise his season average to .254 and extend his hit streak to a season-best five games with the RailRiders. He was one of two batters to notch a two-hit game, joining Ford (2-for-4).

The biggest rally Scranton/Wilkes-Barre had was against the third arm used in the game, Myles Jaye, but he stranded both runners and escaped any damage.

Nestor Cortes (4-4) took the loss, surrendering all four runs on three hits over 5.2 innings.  The southpaw struck out three and walked four.  Cale Coshow followed Cortes in his first appearance since coming off the Disabled List and he combined with Joe Harvey to toss the final 2.1 innings by the bullpen allowing just one solo home run down the stretch.

The RailRiders cap the seven-game road trip with a 4-3 record, securing a winning record on a seven-game road trip for the first time in 2018.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre piles on the bus immediately following Sunday’s game and head home to Moosic, Pa. for a scheduled day off Monday. The RailRiders return to action Tuesday night against the Charlotte Knights with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch to begin a three-game series and a six-game homestand. The RailRiders have RHP Chance Adams (3-4, 4.89) on the mound against RHP Spenser Adams (2-3, 3.32) for the Knights. Pregame coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. with Adam Marco and Adam Giardino on NEPA Sports Radio The Game and the RailRiders Radio Network.
