10 Innings

COLUMBUS, OHIO (July 21, 2018) –
In a game that ended early Sunday morning, 5:07 after it was set to begin Saturday night, Eric Haase blasted a walk-off, two-run home run for the Columbus Clippers to take Game 3 of the weekend’s four-game series against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.

The RailRiders were an unblemished 43-0 when leading after seven innings entering Saturday night’s game, but Columbus rallied in the 9th inning for an unearned run to tie it after entering the inning trailing 3-2. The game moved into the 10th inning, and the RailRiders stranded a runner at third base without being able to get the run across in the top of the inning. Though Columbus nearly squandered the pace-of-play runner at second base to begin the inning when Greg Allen was caught stealing with no outs, Haase delivered the heroics to send what was left of a sellout crowd of 10,100 fans.

The game began under a 1:39 delay due to rain and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre opened the scoring with a run in the second. Kyle Higashioka doubled and scored on a two-out single by Rey Navarro for a 1-0 RailRiders lead.

Columbus took a 2-1 leadoff Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starting pitcher Justus Sheffield in the bottom of the fourth.  Allen doubled and stole third.  After a pair of strikeouts, Eric Haase walked.  A double by Adam Rosales drive in Allen and a throwing error allowed Haase to score from first. Sheffield worked into the bottom of the sixth, working 5.2 innings with one walk and four strikeouts, with only one of the two runs he surrendered an earned run.

The RailRiders were quick to respond in the top of the fifth. With one on, Navarro hit a 3-2 offering from Columbus starter Shao-Ching Chiang over the 22-foot right field wall, putting Scranton/Wilkes-Barre ahead 3-2. Chaing allowed three runs, all earned, on six hits over five innings with five strikeouts.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre conclude the four-game set in Columbus Friday night at Huntington Park with a 4:05 p.m. scheduled first pitch. The RailRiders have LHP Nestor Cortes (4-3, 3.11) on the mound against RHP Adam Plutko (5-3, 1.94). Pregame coverage begins at 3:35 p.m. with Adam Marco and Adam Giardino on NEPA Sports Radio The Game and the RailRiders Radio Network. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre returns to PNC Field on July 24 to open a six-game homestand with a three-game series against the Charlotte Knights.
