OPEN BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS WEEKLY GLANCE
(For May 9 - May 15, 2018)
Former Team USA member helps take doubles lead at USBC Open Championships
Three-time Team USA member AJ Chapman, now hailing from St. Paul, Minnesota, may be young, be he has found success on some of the sport's biggest stages.
The 24-year-old right-hander now is in position to add Eagle winner to the growing list after throwing two of the biggest shots of his adult bowling career May 14 to secure the top spot in Regular Doubles at the 2018 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships with a 1,457 total.
Chapman delivered three clutch strikes in his final frame to complete the effort and cap off a 737 series, which included games of 257, 245 and 235. He teamed with Rich Eighme of Waterloo, Iowa, who started doubles with a 296 game and added 190 and 234 for a 720 set. Eighme left the 2-4-8-10 in his bid for the sixth perfect game of the 2018 USBC Open Championships.
USBC Hall of Famer Steve Kloempken of Pleasant View, Utah, and former Team USA member David Haynes of Las Vegas, previously held the lead with 1,453.
Chapman's 2018 Open Championships campaign ended with a run at the top spot in Regular All-Events, but he came up just short, settling into third place with a 2,147 total. He had 735 in singles and 675 in team. It was his fifth Open Championships appearance.
Eighme, a 50-year-old right-hander making his 33rd tournament appearance, had matching 605 sets in team and singles this year at the Oncenter Convention Center in Syracuse, New York, for a 1,930 all-events total.
"I would really like the doubles number to hold up," Chapman said. "People bowl their entire lifetimes and never get an Eagle. To do it at the age of 24, and this only being my fifth tournament, would be right up there with any of my other accomplishments."
Las Vegas bowler celebrates 50 years at USBC Open Championships
Bud Olriksen of Las Vegas became the newest member of the 50-Year Club at the USBC Open Championships when he made his milestone march to the lanes May 8.

His five-decade journey has taken him and his family across the United States and back again, with 47 of his 50 trips to the world's largest participatory sporting event completed by car.
Three of Olriksen's children enjoyed the trips and the sport so much that they each have logged more than a decade on the tournament lanes alongside their father.
Nicole Olriksen, Ashley Olriksen and Walter Olriksen Jr. all were by his side once again at the Oncenter Convention Center as he was presented with a plaque, chevron and diamond lapel pin to commemorate the milestone.
This year on the tournament lanes, the 75-year-old rolled sets of 423 in doubles, 420 in singles and 405 in team for a 1,248 all-events total. In 50 tournaments, he has knocked down 75,420 pins.
Olriksen is one of 15 bowlers scheduled to reach 50 years of participation in 2018.
New leaders emerge in two Classified events at Oncenter Convention Center
Bill Michalski of Syracuse, New York, thought his bowling season was over, but a series of unexpected events put him back on the lanes and into the lead in Classified All-Events at the 2018 USBC Open Championships.
After bowling in the team event three weeks ago, Michalski didn't have a spot for doubles and singles, but he waited patiently, realizing that thousands of teams still were scheduled to compete at the Oncenter Convention Center, and a spot may open up before the tournament's July 8 conclusion.
The 66-year-old left-hander got the call he was waiting for and took advantage of the opportunity May 9. He vaulted into the top spot in Classified All-Events with a 1,693 total, which included a 582 series in doubles and 554 effort in singles, to go along with the 557 set he posted during his team event April 18.
Wayne Kommalan of Perryville, Maryland, previously held the lead in Classified All-Events with 1,594.
Kenneth Poulsen of West Valley City, Utah, and Robert Johnson of Stansbury Park, Utah, claimed the top spot in Classified Doubles with a 1,082 total May 10. The 2018 event marked their first tournament appearance together in doubles.
The pair posted matching three-game sets of 541 to surpass Jennifer Geimer of Miami Shores, Florida, and Doug Romanik of Miami, who previously held the lead with 1,077.
Johnson, a 69-year-old right-hander competing in the Open Championships for the 19th time, rolled games of 199, 187 and 155, while Poulsen, a 55-year-old right-hander making his fifth tournament appearance, contributed games of 200, 184 and 157.
A look ahead
This week at the 2018 USBC Open Championships, both success and longevity will be celebrated.
