Serna Gives Pill Taste of Own Medicine, 5-3

READING, PA – KC Serna spoiled Tyler Pill’s 12-strikeout night and pushed the Reading Fightin Phils past the Binghamton Mets, 5-3, with a tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth inning on Monday night at FirstEnergy Stadium. Binghamton stranded ten runners, including three in the ninth, in their third straight loss.
With the game tied at three, JP Crawford started the eighth with a double to right-center. Two pitches after Pill recorded his career-best 12^th strikeout of the night, Serna ended the righty’s evening with a blast just over the left-field wall.
Binghamton had a prayer in the ninth after Crawford’s errant throw from short opened the door with two outs. The B-Mets loaded the bases for Dominic Smith, but the first baseman ended a hitless night by flying out to left to end the game.
Pill (2-3) racked up his dozen strikeouts, all swinging, over 7-1/3 innings. The righty allowed five runs on ten hits in his first career regular season loss to Reading. Pill struck out three batters in an inning twice.
The B-Met starter helped his own cause, and erased a one-run deficit, in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, Pill smoked a two-run single into right-center. Pill’s 20^th career hit pushed the B-Mets on top. Derrik Gibson added to the lead with a sacrifice fly to center later in the inning.
Binghamton’s lead did not last for long. Pill allowed the first two to reach in the sixth before Angelo Mora smoked an RBI single to right. Jared King briefly preserved the lead by gunning down Serna at the plate on the play, Aaron Brown followed with a game-tying single to center.
Gregory Infante (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings to earn his first win of the season. John Richy allowed three runs over five innings in the no-decision. Hoby Milner stranded two runners in scoring position in a blank seventh.
The B-Mets (14-14) continue their three-game series against the Fightin Phils on Tuesday morning at 11:35 AM. RHP Casey Delgado makes his Double-A debut against RHP Ben Lively.
