RIVALRY CONTINUES AT MANOR
TRI-VALLEY 53-LIV MANOR 46
The Livingston Manor varsity boys basketball
team always plays tough at home and a growing rivalry continued this past Friday
night with Tri-Valley edging the Wildcats 53-46.
Manor's height advantage played a leading role especially in the
first quarter of play as the Wildcats raced out to a 7-0 lead with 3:39 left on
the clock and it wasn't until 3:32 that the Bears scored their first two
points.
Livingston Manor went on to outscore Tri-Valley 13-9 in first
quarter play.
An aggressive second quarter defense by the Bears reversed the
scoring in favor of Tri-Valley as the Bears offense outscored the Wildcats 13-4
off hoops by Zack Nilsen, Dion Lynch, Thomas Mungeer and Justin
Swarthout.
Following the Bears halftime lead of 22-17 Tri-Valley outscored
the Manor 21-18 in the third quarter. In that third quarter Wildcats guard
Dillion Taggert scoring two three pointers.
Livingston Manor outscored Tri-Valley 11-10 in the final eight
minutes of play.
Turnovers, which could be attributed to the Bears strong
defense, played a big factor in this game with the Wildcats committing
35 miscues to Tri-Valley's 11.
Lack of practice due to snow days and cancellation of games made
both teams look a little rusty. This was the Bears second game following a win
in the Walton Winter Tournament which will place them in the championship game
against Walton scheduled for January 6 at Walton.
Livingston Manor has had three games and posts a 1-2
record.
Tri-Valley guard Sam Tingley had three three-pointers and led
the scoring for his team with 11 points. Jesus Lozada, Mike Post, Justin
Swarthout and Devin Donnelley each scored seven points for the
Bears.
Leading scorer for both teams was the Manor's Dillon Taggert
with 13 points off three three-pointers and four foul shots. Terrance Lockhart
added 11 points and David Dutcher 10 for the Wildcats.
Livingston Manor coach Charlie Hicks was pleased with his teams
first half of play saying, "I was excited about the way we played as we played
last night in a real physical fast paced game and you could see the kind of toll
it took and we stated to peter out a little bit after the first
quarter."
Hicks pointed out that "he (Brian Tingley) started running
double teams of five every three to five minutes as he knew we were getting
tired and he kept his guys fresh as a couple of our key guys, big men and point
guard, got into foul trouble."
"Our inexperience and fatigue took its toll," Hicks
added.
The Manor coach pointed out that the present team is comprised
of "inexperienced juniors and seniors and I think we will be alright as soon as
we find the right mix of guards to get the ball into our big
centers."
Tri-Valley coach Brian Tingley in commenting on his teams first
half of play said, "we didn't expect the 3-2 zone from them as we have seen them
play the 3-2 half-court back to a 2-3 zone."
"We haven't had a lot of practice with snow days and we were a
bit rusty in the first half," he pointed out.
Tingley had praise for the Bears defense and noted, "we played
everybody and wanted to speed it up and get up and down fast and tire them
out."
Asked if he was surprised by Manor's first quarter of play
Tingley pointed out, "they are always tough here and they are not going to come
out and lay down."
Tingley said he was satisfied with this their second game win
but if weather had cooperated they would have had five games completed on this
date.
