Bowling Highlights Column 12-13-13

Barnes Win Thriller At Viper Event

A 7-10 split in the 10th frame by Cheektowaga New York's Ryan Ciminelli proved very costly in the Professional Bowers Association (PBA)  Championshjp last Sunday afternoon and Double Oak, Texas Chris Barnes took advantage to win his 16th career title, 231-212.
This is Barnes second PBA Tour victory of the 2012-13 season.
Ciminelli was the top qualifier in this the second of seven telecasts from the  PBA World Series of Bowling V from Las Vegas, Nev.
The four PBA bowlers to gain the top four slots included Jason Belmonte from Australia who finished fourth winning $5,000, Stuart Williams from England who finished third winning $7,000, Ciminelli who won $10,000 and Barnes who took home the top prize of $20,000.
The bowlers and bowling fans watching these events are giving good grades to the PBA using a unique "Blue Oil" on the lanes to help television viewers and on-site fans see the otherwise invisible lane conditioning pattern.
Williams stated the 1 p.m. ESPN show with a 203-194 victory over Belmonte, Barnes eliminated Belmonte 200-171 to advance to the title match.
In the opening frames of the championship match it looked like Ciminelli was headed towards victory as he took a 15-pin lead after five frames, striking on his five five shots and he maintained his lead into the 10th frame when disaster struck. He left the 7-10 split on a light pocket hit and nearly converted the spare when he bounced the 7 pin out of the pit in front of the 10 pin.
Barnes, working on strikes in the eighth and ninth frames, then locked up the title with two more strikes in his 10th frame.
Many PBA professionals are making predictions that Ciminelli would return to the winner's circle soon as he's trying to step in as the premier left-hander on tour.
This coming Sunday's Chameleon Championship at 1 p.m. on ESPN includes top qualifier Dom Barrett from England, No. 2 qualifier Brian Kretzer of Dayton, Ohio, No. 3 qualifier Ciminelli and No. 4 qualifier Tom Smallwood of Saginaw, Mich.

  Bowling Tip
  By Mike Luongo

Bowlers: This weeks tip will focus on Bowling Ball Maintenance for all types of bowling balls. We will focus on the bowling balls used in the modern era but we must point out that all balls should be cleaned and maintained after each use.
We will start with plastic balls, used by new and recreational bowlers and by many bowlers as a spare ball.
Plastic balls are not porous but due to the high viscosity oils used today the oil will build up on the balls and eliminate any contact with the lane. You can use any car care product or household cleaner to clean the ball very easily. Plain urethane balls with no additives are showing popularity with today's lane conditions but like plastic balls they are porous and will not absorb oil and dirt. You can use the above products to clean the oil and dirt off the ball. However, if you would like to keep the ball dull, use an abrasive pad.
The most common equipment used by league and competitive bowlers is a urethane based bal with additives commonly known as reactive or particle balls. Many different chemicals are used as reactive additives and particles, but, since each company uses chemicals from different suppliers they must be maintained differently.
With high performance balls you should towel the ball off after each shot during use and clean the ball as soon as possible at the end of each bowling session.
There are several ways to clean a high performance ball. If the ball is dull and you would like to keep it that way, you can use warm water, distergent and a gray or burgendy pad (3M makes them) or the back of a scrubber sponge.
If your ball does not have a dull surface and you would like to keep it the same you can use dish detergent with a rag (no abrasive) or a generic ball cleaner that is made for bowling balls and sold in bowling pro shops.
Several companies sell products to match the out-of-box finish if desired.
