Camarena
Handcuffs B-Mets in Opener, 5-1
TRENTON, NJ – Trenton
starter Daniel Camarena tossed eight scoreless innings to lead the Thunder past
the Binghamton Mets, 5-1, on Friday night at Arm & Hammer Park. Binghamton
mustered just four hits off the lefty and suffered their fourth loss in five
games. Phillip Evans extended his hitting streak to 14 games in the defeat.Camarena opened his fourth career start against the B-Mets by retiring 13 of the first 14 batters he faced. After side-stepping a two-out single by Jayce Boyd in the first, the lefty mowed down 11 consecutive B-Mets. Following back-to-back singles by Xorge Carrillo and LJ Mazzilli in the fifth, Camarena set down 11 of the last dozen B-Mets he faced to take the game to the ninth inning.
The Thunder starter pounded the strike zone while breezing through the B-Mets lineup. The southpaw fired 96 of his 68 pitches for strikes and had only one three-ball count. His defensive backed him with several strong plays, including a pair of diving catches in the outfield.
Trenton jumped on B-Mets starter Josh Zeid in the third and fourth innings. With the bases loaded in the third, Dustin Fowler zipped an RBI single into right. Sebastian Valle kicked Trenton’s lead to three by launching a two-run homer to left in the fourth. Culver capped the Thunder’s scoring with a two-run double off Tim Peterson in the sixth.
Binghamton scratched out their only run in the ninth against reliever Caleb Smith. Evans collected his streak-extending hit by singling off Miguel Andujar’s glove at third. Matt Oberste brought him home by floating a two-out single to right.
Zeid (1-1) allowed five runs on six hits over 5-2/3 innings. He struck out three, walked four and watched two runners score under Peterson’s watch.
Camarena (5-0) struck out three in his fourth win in as many starts.
