Tannanah Lake Golf Course Closed This Year

Golfers in the Hudson Valley have lost another top-quality golf course to play on......at least for this 2007 golf season.
The Tennanah Lake Golf & Country Club near Roscoe, NY joins The Monster and International Course at the former Concord Resort near Kiamesha Lake as golf courses that will not be open this 2007 golf season.
Both the International and The Monster golf faculties are undergoing renovations and a new club house and restaurant are included in new constriction at the former Concord location.
No specific reasons for the closure of Tennanah Lake have been given other then course renovations which include building new cart paths. No specifics have been made available as to when and if the course will re-open for the 2008 golf season. Attempts to contact the general manager at the course were not successful. The telephone number at the clubhouse is answered by an answering machine.
The closing of Tennanah Lake came as a big surprise following major construction last year that included a totally renovated clubhouse, an enlarged pro shop, an expanded dining area and grill and the addition of new outside dining decks.
Tennanah Lake was also famous for the 60-mile panoramic view of the Catskill Mountains.
Work on the golf course prior to the opening of the 2006 season also included extensive improvement of the sand traps.
The land for theTennahan Lake Golf course was purchased in 1910 by the Wolf Brothers and was opened for tourism in 1928.
In 1952, the nine-hole golf course was redesigned by Alfred Tull and expanded to 18 holes. Six of the original nine holes were utilized in the design.
One of the highlights at the course was the exhibition play of Sam Snead in 1952. Sam called the layout one of the longest and most challenging courses he has ever played.
The facilities are presently owned by Love Realty of New York and Florida and its CEO Burton and Lucielle Handelsman who teamed up with Manhattan-based real estate acquisitions firm Walter and Samuels and its chairman David Berley. They were not available for comment.
The course previously housed a Men's league on Wednesday and a Women;s league on Thursday.
A number of organizations held yearly tournaments at Tennanah Lake but have now had to seek other locations for their events.

Bowling Tip
By Mike Luongo

Bowlers: This week's tip is for parents with children who either bowl in a youth league or bowl regularly with their own equipment.
Parents, when is the last time you had your child's fit checked on their bowling ball at your local pro shop?
Children tend to grow quickly and the gripping holes in their bowling balls must be adjusted to accommodate this growth.
Bowling with poor-fitting equipment can become frustrating and uncomfortable. In most cases, it will only take a minute or two for adjustments to be made.
Also, if your child has his or her own bowling shoes, you can check the size yourself to see if the fit is acceptable. Do not wait for blisters to form on the toes.
Remember, the game is meant to be enjoyed, not to be a form of torture.

Ed's Outlook

It's hard to top a season in which you win two Majors and set a career-high in earnings, but 18-year Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour veteran Doug Kent has added to what was already a dream season.....and this is our reasoning as to why he should be named this years PBA Player of the Year.
Doug, who we have gotten to know on a personal basis, last week defeated Norm Duke, six-strikes-to-three, to win the third annual Motel 6 Roll to Riches special event and take home the $150,000 winner-take-all top prize.
Selected to compete in this top end of season event along with Kent and Duke were Walter Ray Williams, Tommy Jones, Pete Weber and Wes Malott.
Kent hails from Newark, NY, between Rochester and Buffalo and is the owner of two bowling establishments in that area of New York State.
Doug is also the brother-in-law of Jackson, New Jersey's Parker Bohn III.
Congratulations Doug on a great season.

Here & There 4-17-07

Legislature Candidate Wants To Reduce Tax Burden

When anyone says they want to reduce our tax burden in Sullivan County it usually catches my attention but when a "politician" says this message then I really sit up to see what else important they might say.
Jeffersonville Chiropractor Dr. David Sager has launched a campaign which he hopes will elect him as the next county legislative representative for District 1.
For the past eight years he has served the people of Sullivan County as one of our elected County Coroners.
In speaking with folks who come in direct contact with Dr. Sager they have told me he does his job with a great amount of professionalism and dignity.
Dr. Sager in making the decision to enter the race for the county legislative representative for the Towns of Bethel, Cochecton, Delaware and Tusten says he has made it his life's agenda to try to help people.
In accepting the Republican party nomination for District No. 1, he noted, "my blood does not bleed Democrat blue or Republican red, but rather, my heart aches for the residents of Sullivan County."
"I cannot sit back as our state, school and county taxes careen out of control. The rate of tax inflation has risen at a far greater rate than our pay or current job markets can sustain and I firmly believe that we are reaching a boiling point. New York State is by many studies, the second most highly taxed state in the union and Sullivan County is statistically among its poorest," Dr. Sager said,.
Dr. Sager says, "that even within the walls of the government center, I have never seen employee morale as bad as it is today," and he points out that government center employees, "know why, because they are proud residents of Sullivan County too and can see what has been going on around here for years."
The District 1 Republican candidate points out that there has been "foolish waste of a major county resource in the landfill," and he wonders "just where we will be placing our own trash in the coming years."
He is critical of "the overpriced purchase of a new Department of Public Works (DPW) site in a poor location on a busy roadway and which is affectionately referred to as "Moneywood" not Maplewood as you watch untold additional millions of taxpayer dollars poured into it to make it even suitable for workers' needs."
Dr Sager speaks about the subject of a new county jail and what it will "really cost us in the end."
"I can tell you with an estimated 7-10 million dollars price tag on just the supervision of the building of the jail, it isn't looking good," Dr. Sager said.
He calls a spade a spade when he points out that there has been "politically motivated vendettas, back stabbing, nepotism and partisanship on a daily basis," in our county government and he reminds county taxpayers that "this year it's the sales tax, but next years it will have to be something else that they raise."
We like those who say we need a change now and we agree that there is a great need for responsible leaders in the county legislature who are going to stop the waste going on within county government.
We would like to see more candidates who endorse facts and the need to run the county with the efficiency of a successful business and there is a desperate need for leaders who are going to treat the beleaguered taxpayers of Sullivan County with kid gloves and spend within our means.

Robert Fix III

Ralph Coney & Robert Fix III Score 300 Games

An accomplished veteran bowler and an up and coming teenager from a well-known bowling family recently recorded 300 games.
Forty-eight year-old lefty Ralph Coney scored his fifth career 300 on February 23 in the Friday Mixed league at Liberty Lanes.
Bowling for some 37 years, Coney has put his name in the record book with four 300 games and a high series of 784 over a period of the last 25 years.
On February 23 Ralph put together a 219, 300, 192, 711 series using a Brunswick Ultimate Inferno bowling ball. Of the 12 strikes Ralph noted that one of them was a light hit in the pocket.
In addition to the Friday Mixed league Ralph also bowls in the Wednesday Men's league and the Thursday Men's Doubles league, all at Liberty Lanes.
He currently maintains a 211 average and bowls with the Buck Satan & The 666 Shooter team in the Friday Mixed league.
A resident of the East Hill Road between Jeffersonville and Youngsville, Ralph is married with three children.
He is employed as an electrician with Ross Electric in Liberty.
In recognition of the 300 game Liberty Lanes presented Ralph with a 300 game jacket.
Eighteen-year-old Robert Fix III truly comes from a well-founded and established bowling family and the years of training and learning good bowling skills from his father and grandfather paid off recently in the Tri-County NY United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Association Open (Men's) tournament held at Callicoon Lanes.
Robert scored his first career 300 game on February 25 while bowling with Paul Tuttle, Derek Irwin and his cousin, Kyle Stevens, all members of the Thursday Men's Doubles league at Liberty Lanes.
Bowling for some 12 years, he used a Brunswick Fuse bowling ball in scoring this 300 game.
Robert's previous high game and series was a 202, 259, 247, 708 bowled on October 25, 2003 in the Saturday Morning Liberty Elks Teenage league at Liberty Lanes.

Bowling Tip
By Mike Luongo

Bowlers: This weeks column will answer a question many bowlers ask about side weight.
Will it make my ball hook?
The answer is "absolutely no."
I have been fortunate to be able to spend some time with technical experts, and although we have suspected for quite some time, we now have the proof.
Two factors are needed to make a bowling ball hook......friction and rotation. (Gravity is also needed but I think that we all understand that or we would all be floating around.
You could take a bowling ball with the strongest weight block on the market, the most aggressive cover, drill it maximum leverage, add all the weight you want, and use a big balance hole, but, if the bowler does no impart proper rotation, or if friction on the ball's path down the lane is not there......the ball will go straight.

Coffee Clatch Discusses Threat To All Of Us

However unpopular the war in Iraq is and any attempt by any political party to undermine our troops were the topics discussed by our Sullivan County coffee clatch recently.
Our six member group who meets for fresh home made coffee and donuts several times a month is made up of three Republicans, one independent and two Democrats so when you infuse a topic like the Iraq war and the funding of our troops fighting this war one never knows what the results of our discussion would be.
We discussed the threat from so-called radical Islamic terrorists and we all were unanimous in our conclusion that this threat will not vanish when President Bush leaves office or if funds for the Iraq war are cut off in 2008.
A frequent charge is that we are bringing terrorists to Iraq. That may be true in the sense that war always brings the enemy to the battlefield.....but we also feel this is false since it ignores why killers like Abu Musb al-Zarquwi......the late al-Qaida chief in Iraq, Abu Nidal and Abu Abbas.....Palestinian terrorists of the 1980's........ and Abdul Rahman Yasin ......involved in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing...... were already in Saddam's Iraq when our troops arrived there.
During the second round of coffee and donuts one of our tea drinkers brought up some interesting facts when he noted that in October 2002, both houses of Congress authorized the use of force (we don't declare war anymore) against Iraq and this action was done by large majorities. Senator Jay Rockefeller, a Democratic member of the Senate Intelligence Committee who had access to all the relevant information at the time, said, I have come to the inescapable conclusion that the threat posed to America by Saddam's weapons of mass destruction is so serious that despite the risks....and we should not minimize the risks...we must authorize the president to take the necessary steps to deal with that threat."
We threw the question of how best do we now fight this war and terrorism and the unanimous answer was that we can't bleed our troops by trying to take away funding designed to fight what military leaders say will end this war.
One of our coffee clatch members noted strongly that attempts to take away funding for our troops only complicates the war and very well could make it unwinnable.
We also unanimously agreed that politics in its dirtiest form has complicated the fight for democratic freedom in Iraq and it leaves our troops out there without the tactical reinforcements that is needed to win this fight.
We concluded our discussion by remembering the statement that the threat from radical Islamic terrorists will not vanish when President Bush leaves office and if we pull out of Iraq before the democracy there is stabilized.....in the short run we will save lives and money......but as the larger war continues after we withdraw, jihadists will still flock to the Sunni Triangle....Hamas and Hesbollah will still rocket Israel.....Syria will still kill Lebanese reformers.....Iran will still try to cheat it's way to a nuclear bomb....Ayman al-Zawahiri will still broadcast his al-Qaida threats from safety in nuclear Pakistan......the oil-rich illegitimateGulf sheikdoms will still make secret concessions and bribe increasingly confident terrorists to leave them alone.....and jihadists will still try to sneak into the United States to kill us.

Jones Wins Tournament Of Champions

Tommy Jones

Tommy Jones Win Tournament of Champions

When two titles are considered a down year, it can only mean the bar has been raised to an unbelievably high level.
Tommy Jones has raised the bar higher than any bowler in Dennys Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour history, capturing his 10th career title and second Major on Sunday, April 1, with a 257-222 win over Tony Reyes to win the 2007 PBA Tournament of Champions at Mohegan Sun Arena, Uncasville, Conn.
Jones won his 10 titles in two years, six months and seven days, breaking the PBA record for shortest time between first and 10 titles by four days. PBA legend Dick Weber held the record for 45 years until Jones salvaged what was considered a down year for the 28-year-old.
Jones won his first career title in the 2004 Japan Cup and went on to win four titles in both 2004-05 and 2005-06, including his first Major in last seasons 63rd U.S. Open. He had won just one title this season coming into this week, but he dominated both his opponents on Sunday.
"It feels great. I havent been bowling very well this season, but I worked with Del Ballard recently and I have to thank him for getting me back here," said Jones, the 2005-06 PBA Player of the Year, of the 12-time titlist. "Next year Im going to be back and ready to go again. Im ready to win another Player of the Year."
Though he hasn't been among the many bowlers in a crowded PBA Player of the Year race, Jones did take another step toward history, capturing his second of the PBA's Triple Crown events. He only needs a World Championship title to become the fifth bowler in history to win the Triple Crown.
The title match was never in doubt as Jones started with six consecutive strikes while Reyes, making his Tournament of Champions debut, struggled with just one strike in the first four frames including an open in the 4th frame.
Jones advanced to the title match with a 279-238 win over Chris Barnes. On the 40th anniversary of the Tours first-ever televised 300 game in the 1967 Tournament of Champions, Jones looked like he might repeat the feat, starting with the first seven strikes. A 10-pin in the 8th frame foiled the effort, but he recovered with four consecutive strikes to close out the match.
Reyes advanced to the title match with a 215-206 win over Norm Duke.
Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.) earned $60,000 for the win. Reyes (San Bruno, Calif.) took home $20,000 for second, while Barnes (Double Oak, Texas) and Duke (Clermont, Fla.) earned $10,000 each for third and fourth, respectively.
The Tournament of Champions wraps up the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour season. Next week, six bowlers will compete in a special winner-take-all event, the 2007 Motel 6 Roll to Riches at Sequoia Pro Bowl in Columbus, Ohio. The Major winners from this season (Doug Kent, Jones and Pete Weber), PBA World Point Rankings leader (Wes Malott) and two bowlers from an on-line fan vote (Duke, Walter Ray Williams Jr.) will compete for the $150,000 top prize. This event will air on ESPN at 1 p.m. on April 15. ..

Mark Wegener
Jaryl Scott

Wegener & Scott Score 300's & 800 Plus Series

Mark Wegener and Jaryl Scott are part of a team that heads to the United States Bowling Congress Open Championship next week at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev. and they will be taking with them game plans that put then on top of their scoring abilities.
Mark scored his sixth career 300 on March 21 in the Wednesday Men's league on lanes 9-10 at Kiamesha Lanes and added a 249, 213, 762 series.
In two previously snowed out Kiamesha Lanes Monday Men's league makeup matches bowled on Sunday, March 25, Wegener flirted with 300 games three times that day.....first 11 in his first game and the first nine strikes in the second and sixth games that same Sunday afternoon. His totals Sunday March 25 were 299, 277, 236, 812 and in the second match he recorded a 213, 279, 672.
All of the above scores were recorded with an Ebonite BIG ONE which replaced a damaged Columbia ball.
His previous 300 scores came in 1987, 2000, 2003, Nov. 22, 2006 and just recently on January 29, 2007. Mark's previous 800 series scores came in 2005 with an 818 and in 2006 with an 800.
Mark's recent high scores are attributed to an upgrade to some new bowling equipment which he purchased as a result of his trip next week to the USBC championships.
Wegener, 44, of Woodridge also uses a Hammer Road Hawg bowling ball.
Bowling for some 32 years, Mark bowl in these leagues and maintains a 224 average
Mark is married and is the Pharmacist/Manager at the Medicap Pharmacy in Livingston Manor.
Jaryl Scott recorded his sixth career 300 on Sunday, March 25 in makeup matches for the Monday Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes as he banged the maples for a 300, 239, 279, 818 on lanes 13-14.
Most recently on January 10th he scored his fifth career 300.
Scott, 34, from South Fallsburg, previously had an 805 series and in the past several years bowled in a few Professional Bowlers Association regional tournaments.
He averages in the 217 range in the Monday and Wednesday Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes and presently uses a Roto Grip Apocalypse bowling ball.
Jaryl is single and the father of two children, Jeremiah and Elijah.
He is employed as a store clerk at Cooper Paints in Monticello.

Bowling Tip
By Mike Luongo

Bowlers: This week's tip is for bowlers using performance bowling balls. These balls are made of urethane, urethane with reactive additives, with or without particles.
All performance balls come out of the box with either some degree of matte finish, a compounded finish or polished finish.
When a manufacturer chooses a box finish for a bowling ball, many times it is for shelf appeal. All companies want you to choose their products. What you need to know as a customer is that the cover on your performance ball can be adjusted to best fit your needs.
What does this mean for a customer? To maximize your scoring ability on a given lane condition, the cover stock of your bowling ball should match the lane condition. If your ball is grabbing too early, you will need some polish, If the ball is already polished, use a higher degree of polish, preferably something with a slip agent. This will help you get the ball down the lane with less effort. The telltale sign of a ball grabbing the lane too soon is when you see the ball start to hook and the it stops hooking.
On the other hand, if your ball is skidding too far down the lane, you will need some surface friction on the ball. How much friction you need will depend on your ball speed, rev rate and the amount of oil on the lane. The degree of matte finish could be as little as 4000 or as much as 320.
Reminder.....these are adjustments to fine tune your ball reaction. It is up to your Pro Shop professional to help you purchase the ball or balls with the proper core and cover to match both your game and the lane surface on which you bowl. Depending on how serious you are about your bowling, and how many centers you bowl in, you may need more than one ball to help you match the conditions.
And always remember.....you equipment should be cleaned each time it is used.

Ed's Outlook

The United States Bowling Congress (USBC) gets a real pat on the back this week for their efforts in raising more than $1 million to help cure breast cancer.
Several weeks ago the USBC announced the presentation of a check for $1,003,000 to the Susan G. Komen ForThe Cure. The presentation was during the seventh-annual Meet for the Cure ceremony at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center, which is hosting the first annual USBC convention-meeting.
The presentation brought the total from USBC and the former Women's International Bowling Congress to more than $6 million.
A great effort by a major sports organization that really cares.

PROFESSIONAL BOWLERS ASSOCIATION

When two titles are considered a down year, it can only mean the bar has been raised to an unbelievably high level.
Tommy Jones has raised the bar higher than any bowler in Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour history, capturing his 10th career title and second Major last Sunday afternoon with a 257-222 win over Tony Reyes to win the 2007 PBA Tournament of Champions at Mohegan Sun Arena, Uncasville, Conn.
This tournament wraps up the 2006-07 tour and next week six bowlers will compete in a special winner-take-all event, the 2007 Motel 6 Roll to Riches at Sequoia Pro Bowl in Columbus Ohio.
The six bowlers to compete in this event include Jones, Doug Kent, Pete Weber, Wes Malott, Norm Duke and Walter Ray Williams Jr.. The winner gets $150,000.
