OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS WEEKLY GLANCE
(For April 17 - April 23, 2019)
California bowler leads Regular Singles at USBC Open Championships
Ron Case of Oakley, California, saw his teammates striking quite a bit during doubles at the 2019 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships in Las Vegas, and he was able to get in on the action during his singles set.
The 49-year-old right-hander put together games of 299, 266 and 238 at the South Point Bowling Plaza in the early hours of April 17 to sneak into the Regular Singles lead by a single pin. Case's 803 set bested Ryan Mouw of Muskegon, Michigan, who previously held the top spot with 802.
Case, who shot 572 in team and 578 in doubles, opened his singles event with 11 consecutive strikes, before a 10 pin ended his chance at the sixth 300 of the year. Instead, he settled for the second 299 game of the 2019 Open Championships.
He finished his 26th tournament appearance with a 1,953 all-events total.
"I started the night in the doubles not throwing the ball well or bowling very well, but we stayed with our plan, we played where we felt we should play and broke the lanes down nice," Case said. "When singles came around, I just went straight to a ball change, and it was a guess on where to play with that ball. Knowing my equipment helped out. I went to a ball I've bowled a lot with over the years, and they just started falling."
There were several other exciting finishes throughout the week in all three divisions (Regular, Standard and Classified), but none of them resulted in a lead change.
The Regular Team lead came under fire April 22 when Coach K Scholarship of Pleasant View, Utah, shot 1,074 and 1,073 its first two games. After a strong start to the third game, a collection of splits and open frames ended the team's run. The group finished with 1,052, good for a 3,199 total and third place in the standings.
California bowler sets pace with 300 game at South Point Bowling Plaza
Curtis Woods of Santa Rosa, California, started the doubles and singles strike frenzy for him and his teammates at the South Point Bowling Plaza late April 16.
Woods rolled the fifth 300 of the 2019 USBC Open Championships, which came between games of 221 and 243 for a career-best 764 series and catapulted him and Sam Carter of Ben Lomond, California (613), into the top 10 in Regular Doubles with a 1,367 effort.
Carter also owns a perfect game at the Open Championships, rolled during doubles at the 2012 tournament in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Woods, a 45-year-old right-hander, opened his 14th Open Championships campaign this year with a 624 series in team and finished with 631 in singles for a 2,019 all-events total.
While Woods and Carter were making their doubles run this week, their teammates, Aaron Pawloski of Brentwood, California, and Robert Huckaby of Santa Cruz, California, quietly were making their way up the Regular Doubles standings.
Pawloski, a 15-time Open Championships participant, rolled games of 248, 254 and 277 for a career-best 779 series, while Huckaby added 217, 185 and 211 for a 613 set and 1,392 total. They settled into third place in Regular Doubles, which is led by Cotie Holbek of Burlington, Wisconsin, and Steven Fisher of Winthrop Harbor, Illinois, with 1,478.
The overall effort for Woods and his Big O Tires teammates, which included singles leader Ron Case, helped the group into third place in Team All-Events.
The team averaged nearly 224 in doubles and singles and finished with a 9,709 total. Mento Produce of Syracuse, New York, leads with 9,983.
Pawloski led the way for Big O Tires this week at the South Point Bowling Plaza with a 2,128 all-events total, which is fifth in Regular All-Events, and he was followed by Woods (2,019), Case (1,953), Mark Mazzulla (1,806) and Huckaby (1,803). Ryan Mouw still leads all-events with 2,156, and his team, defending champion S and B Pro Shop 1, leads Regular Team with 3,254.
Two other bowlers, Scott Culp of Honeoye, New York, and Eric Hatchett of Las Vegas, also came within one shot of perfection this week at South Point.
Culp shot 299 in his first game of singles April 18, leaving a 10 pin on his final shot. He followed with games of 194 and 222 for a 715 series, which put him inside the top 40 in Regular Singles.
Hatchett rolled his 299 during his first game at the Bowlers Journal Championships presented by USBC, being held at the nearby South Point Bowling Center. After leaving a 9 pin on his final ball, he went on to shoot games of 180 and 150 for a 629 series.
A look ahead
Two bowlers are scheduled to reach milestones this week at the USBC Open Championships.
Joseph Mortellaro of Corfu, New York, and John Giesfeldt of West Milwaukee, Wisconsin, will be the next bowlers to celebrate five decades of participation when they hit the lanes at the South Point Bowling Plaza on April 26 and April 28, respectively.
Mortellaro and Giesfeldt are two of 23 bowlers scheduled to join the 50-Year Club at the 2019 Open Championships in Las Vegas.
