OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS WEEKLY GLANCE
(For April 10 - April 16, 2019)
Three bowlers reach milestones at USBC Open Championships
Bowling fans at the 2019 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships experienced a triple dose of history this week as three bowlers reached participation milestones at the South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas.
James Bigelbach of St. Paul, Minnesota, became the first bowler this year to reach the 60-year plateau when he took to the lanes April 14, while Gene Ennis of Jamestown, Indiana (April 10), and Thomas Groh Sr. of Ham Lake, Minnesota (April 14), were the fifth and sixth bowlers, respectively, of the 23 scheduled to hit the 50-year mark this year.
Bigelbach received a chevron, plaque and engraved money clip to commemorate his milestone, and Ennis and Groh each received a chevron, plaque and diamond lapel pin to commemorate their achievements.
Bigelbach's USBC Open Championships debut came in his hometown of St. Paul in 1951. The 87-year-old right-hander finished his milestone campaign this year with a 1,275 all-events total, which included a 447 series in singles, 431 in team and 397 in doubles.
In 60 years on the championship lanes, he has knocked down 91,889 pins for a 172 career average.
He also has passed on the Open Championships passion to his family, and he was joined on the lanes this year by his son, Brian, who made his 25th consecutive tournament appearance.
Ennis, an 82-year-old right-hander, made his first tournament appearance at the 1963 event in Buffalo, New York.
In his Open Championships career, Ennis has knocked down 78,320 pins for a career average of 177.6. That includes sets of 499 in singles, 433 in doubles and 425 in team for a 1,357 all-events total this year at the South Point Bowling Plaza.
Groh, 76, started his Open Championships career in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1969 as a 26-year-old.
This year, he rolled sets of 471 in team, 467 in singles and 421 in doubles for a 1,359 total. In 50 years, he has toppled 79,586 pins for a career average of 179.
Illinois bowler rolls perfect game at South Point Bowling Plaza
Ryan Yanel of Antioch, Illinois, rolled the fourth perfect game of the 2019 USBC Open Championships.
Ryan Yanel of Antioch, Illinois, rolled the fourth perfect game of the 2019 USBC Open Championships.
The 33-year-old right-hander bounced back from the second-lowest series of his 16 appearances at the Open Championships with an amazing highlight and an improvement of more than 200 pins, something he credits to experience and patience gained as a longtime competitor.
After a 518 series in doubles April 13, Yanel rebounded with games of 204, 300 and 223 for a 727 series, the highest set of his tournament career. His perfect game was the first during singles competition this year.
He started his 2019 Open Championships campaign with a 672 series in team and finished with a 1,917 all-events total.
Yanel wasn't the only member of his group to find success in Las Vegas.
During their outing at the Bowlers Journal Championships presented by USBC, Rick Golemba of Wauconda, Illinois, rolled the second 300 of the event, which is being held at the nearby South Point Bowling Center.
Since the oil pattern used at the Bowlers Journal Championships is the same pattern used for doubles and singles at the Open Championships, they used what they learned to finalize their game plan for their second day of competition at the Open Championships, and it paid off for Yanel.
New York group leads Team All-Events at 2019 USBC Open Championships
Derek Magno of Cicero, New York, rolled a perfect game during his team event last week at the USBC Open Championships and returned to the lanes April 9 (after the OC Glance was sent out) to help Mento Produce of Syracuse, New York, into the top spot in Team All-Events with a 9,983 total.
