USBC TECHNOLOGY TEAM WINS NATIONAL INNOVATION AWARD

The United States Bowling Congress beat out several
multimillion dollar corporations to win the 2009 COMMON/IBM Power Systems
Innovation Award for Energy Efficiency.

The award recognizes a company demonstrating outstanding achievement using IBM
solutions to reduce power consumption. The USBC technology team won the award for
its work creating a new data center at the International Bowling Campus in Arlington,
Texas.

"As a member-funded nonprofit, USBC needs to find innovative ways to increase
efficiency and reduce energy costs," USBC Vice President of Technology Jim
Oberholtzer said. "The weather in Texas changes quickly. Using IBM technology, we can
monitor the data center to optimize temperature and humidity."

Last year, USBC moved its data center, which contains information on 2.5 million
bowlers and their achievements, from the organization's previous headquarters in
Greendale, Wis.

"Following the relocation, USBC is seeing about a 50-percent reduction in cooling for the
data center; that should eliminate over five tons of carbon emissions a year," Oberholtzer
said. "The cost savings should be nearly $15,000 a year, and we would much rather
spend that money on bowlers than power bills."

The project involved USBC consolidating its corporate data center on IBM i servers,
blades and PowerVM virtualization software. USBC also now uses IBM Systems
Director Active Energy Manager to control intelligent power distribution units (PDUs),
managing power utilization.

"The United States Bowling Congress has rolled a strike with this Innovation Award for
Power Efficiency," said Ian Jarman, manager of Power Systems Software, IBM Systems
& Technology Group. "USBC has discovered a creative way to use IBM technology to
reduce cooling in the data center and has made the world a greener place."

United States Bowling Congress
The United States Bowling Congress, as the national governing body, ensures the
integrity and protects the future of the sport, provides programs and services to nearly 2.5
million adult and youth members and enhances the bowling experience.
