Here & There Column 12-7-10

What's New In Building A Casino

The on again, off again is on again and we are once again hearing and reading political dreams about a possible Sullivan County Catskill Casino.
If one could put any value into what various politicians are saying the project to build a Stockbridge-Munsee casino off Route 17's Exit 107 is practically a done deal.
Heavy-weight political voices like Senator Charles Schumer has promised to put pressure on federal agencies and he added "I will use what clout I have in Washington to make them say yes."
Schumer added that there are key components now that add up to "a novel solution," and that "it is the closest we've come."
Rep. Maurice Hinchey has also pledged to lean hard on the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the current Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to get approval for this casino.
One could almost sit back, take another deep breath, and say let's see if Sen. Schumer and Rep. Hinchey can deliver on these statements.
There is no doubt in our mind that this new casino proposal, if all the big pipe dreams come through, could help in the economic revitalization of Sullivan County with the estimated 3,000 construction jobs and 4,000 permanent jobs.
For so many reasons the grandstanding casino activities November 22 at the government center could once again become nothing more then dust in the winds.
Action always speaks louder then words and these efforts could easily become a part of the countless failed casino schemes of the past.
Stay tuned for the next chapter.
