Band & Dancers Highlight Germanfest
The Bavarian Musik Verein band from Binghamton and the Poughkeepsie Schuplatter Folk Dancers bring true German heritage to the annual Von Steuben Parade and Germanfest sponsored yearly by the Yulan Fire Department.
Unfortunately the threat of rain on the day of this event affected the parade and those who had planned on marching but the heritage honoring the Revolutionary War General
Baron Von Steuben and this Germanfest certainly was evident in the variety of German foods, desserts and music.
A number of folks mentioned to us that they would have liked the opportunity to purchase German souvenirs (other than Beer steins) and clothing (like tee shirts honoring the German heritage. Several also noted the absence of real German liquid refreshments.
We certainly applaud the Yulan Fire Department for the many hours of hard work in preparation for the staging of this event which of course is a major fund raiser for this fire department.
The Germanfest takes place following the parade at Fireman's Field and here is where most of the true German traditions take shape and true spirit of the Germanfest comes alive.
The German heritage and tradition is very evident with the wearing of the lederhosen, listening and dancing to traditional German and Bavarian music, eating delicious German food (and don't forget that great chocolate German cake)......and then there is also the heisting of the beer mugs....made famous by several German songs.
But the highlight of the day is listening to the Bavarian Musik Verein (Binghamton Band) and watching the Poughkeepsie based Schluplatter Folk Dancers as they bring their precision and professionalism and the true heritage of the German people to the little hamlet of Yulan.
The German community loves their heritage and we say thanks to the Yulan Fire Department for letting it all happen.
