Bowling Highlights Column 10-31-08

Donald Durland

Durland Scores 7th Career 300

Ever since he recorded his first-ever 300 game during the 2005-2006 season as a youth bowler in the Saturday Morning Youth leagues at Kiamesha Lanes Sullivan County bowlers have watched the steady growth of Wurtsboro bowler Donald Durland.
This now very proficient 20-year-old kegler recorded his seventh career 300 game while subbing October 24 in the Friday Mixed Doubles league at Kiamesha Lanes.
Bowling with Glen Fraser, Kearstin DeGraw and Nancy Fraser, Durland used a Hawg by Hammer bowling ball to record scores of 206, 227, 300, 733 on lanes 5 and 6.
All 12 strikes were in the pocket.
His sixth-career 300 game came on July 30 in the Wednesday Night Mixed Summer league at Colonial Lanes in Chester. On that night he scored a 708 series, which included the 300 and games of 223 and 185 with a Hammer Vibe bowling ball.
In that summer league Donald averaged 200 and bowled with the Killer Angels II team consisting of his mother, Debbie Durland (one of the premier women bowlers in the Tri-County area), Tom Cooney and Pat Cooney.
Durland must like subbing in the Kiamesha Lanes Friday Mixed league because his fifth 300 game was bowled on April 4 of this year in that league using an Ebonite Maxim plastic bowling ball.
His high series of 796 off single games of 268, 249 and 279 was bowled earlier this year in the Monday Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes.
He has been bowling since the age of 5 and averages 216 in the Wednesday Men's league and 214 in the Monday Men's league, both at Kiamesha Lanes.

The Bowling Tip
By Mike Luongo

This tip is for all bowlers regardless of age or level of play.
So very often today bowlers find themselves off balance at the foul line.
While there are many reasons for this, what you may not realize is that most bad finishes are a result of a bad start.
The tip: Check your first step and see if it's too long. This will cause you to push the ball away too far and then your feet will have to play "catch up" to keep you from falling down.
Try a smaller first step next time......it may help.
Mike Luongo is technically certified through IBPSIA as a Pro Shop Operator and Master Instructor. He is also a Silver Level Coach with the USBC and is also the Northeast Regional Sales Manager with the Storm and Roto Grip Bowling Ball Company. Ed's Outlook

Tri-County NY USBC Association Manager Michele Bensley is wanting to let league bowlers know that the association computer recently died and a new computer has been purchased but that the USBC Winlabs Program is not yet in total operation so she is far behind and about 30 leagues are waiting for processing. So if your looking for awards or membership cards if will probably be about 2-3 weeks....be patient while she is getting this program up and running.
The Brittany Miller Foundation team tournament and auction will be held at Kiamesha Lanes on Sunday, Novermber 16 at 12 noon. The tournament is both a fund raiser with a prize fund as 1st, 2ed and 3ed place teams will win prize money.
The Brittany Miller Foundation is a Pediatric Cancer Fund.
Four person Mixed teams or any configuration will receive 100 percent handicap based on 220 and you must have verifiable sanctioned averages to win.
The prize fund is based on 16 teams and a second squad at 3:30 will be created if necessary.
There will be raffles and door prizes plus refreshments. Make the "baby split" and win $2 and make any bigger split and win $5. These must be observed by a tournament director.
Entry fee is $100 per team and entry forms are available at Kiamesha Lanes.

Norm Duke with Championship trophy

Duke Makes History at PBA World Championship
Duke becomes first player in PBA history to win three consecutive Majors

Norm Duke became the first player in PBA history to win three consecutive Majors as he captured the PBA World Championship at Northrock Lanes in Wichita, Kan., last Sunday afternoon, which marks the first event of the 50th Anniversary Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour season. Prior to today’s win over 2007-08 PBA Player of the Year Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Tex. (259-189), Duke had won the 2007-08 Denny’s World Championship and the U.S. Open. Today marked his first PBA World Championship title in his 27-year career.
“That (making history) hasn’t hit me,” Duke said. “I was focused on winning the World Championship. When I heard that, it kind of choked me up. It’s a dream and I want to thank my family for standing by me the whole time.”
Duke, of Clermont, Fla., started with the first seven strikes in the championship match, leaving a 10-pin in the eighth frame. Duke shot 259, claiming the title, along with a two-year exemption and $50,000. Meanwhile, Barnes looked shaky as he opened two of the first five frames, never recovering, shooting 189 in the title match.
“The guys are getting real good at being able to all play all parts of the lane. Chris (Barnes) is exceptional playing in and out,” Duke said. “He did a good job of being able to leapfrog between the two. I was fortunate. I was the one who got the strikes.”
Duke now holds 30 total PBA career titles, with six Major wins lifetime. Today marked his 100th singles television appearance. He advanced to today’s final by defeating Wichita resident Sean Rash 236-215 in the first semifinal of the day. Duke struck out in the 10th frame forcing Rash to strike out to tie; however, Rash left a 9-pin in the 10th frame.
Barnes advanced to today’s title match by defeating Steve Jaros (Yorkville, Ill.) 202-181. Jaros had an early lead, but Barnes continued his trend of coming back from a deficit, striking out in the 10th frame to lock out Jaros to advance. Barnes took home the second-place prize of $25,000.
The PBA World Championship took place in Wichita, Kan. at Northrock Lanes. The Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour continues October 28 - November 2 at the Pepsi Viper Championship in Omaha, Neb. The finals will broadcast live Sunday on ESPN at 1 p.m. EST. For complete Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour information, please visit pba.com.

2009 PBA Women’s Series Kicks Off This Week in Omaha
Series grows from four to seven events and includes diverse field

The women take the stage on the PBA Tour this week as the 2008-09 PBA Women’s Series kicks off at the Pepsi Viper Championship at Thunder Alley in Omaha, Neb., Oct. 29-Nov. 2.

The PBA Women’s Series will feature a diverse field including veterans Carolyn Dorin-Ballard and Tennelle Milligan, fresh, young faces in Adrienne Miller and Trisha Reid, and international stars Clara Guerrero and Shalin Zulkifli, of Colombia and Malaysia, respectively.

“I think everyone can identify with at least one woman on the tour,” Zulkifli said. “We all have so many different styles and come from different backgrounds.”

The 16 exempt-bowler field was determined at the 2008 PBA Women’s Tour Trials, which were held in conjunction with the 2008 Women’s U.S. Open, a United States Bowling Congress (USBC) event. The top 12 women advanced through the PBA Women’s Tour Trials, while the four winners of last season’s events --- Diandra Asbaty, Dorin-Ballard, Joy Esterson and Shannon Pluhowsky --- received automatic berths.

The 2008 PBA Women’s Series, which is sponsored by the USBC, marks the only opportunity for women to bowl on Tour since the Professional Women’s Bowling Association (PWBA) folded in 2003. Five of the current PBA Women’s Series players were PWBA Alum ---- Dorin-Ballard, Milligan, Brenda Mack, Michelle Feldman and Shannon O’ Keefe.

The PBA Women’s Series, which debuted in 2007, proved to be so popular that the PBA increased the series to seven events as part of the 50th anniversary PBA Tour season.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Dorin-Ballard said. “I think going from four events to seven is definitely a step in the right direction.”

The championship match of each event will be televised live on ESPN as part of the regular PBA Tour telecast. Each PBA Women’s Series event, which will run concurrently with seven Lumber Liquidators’ PBA Tour events, including this week’s Pepsi Viper Championship, will feature a $51,100 prize fund, including a $10,000 top prize.

Here & There Column 10-28-08

Our Financial Mess & The Elections

Sooner or later I knew that our coffee Klatsch would bring up the topic of what happened on wall street and what our presidential candidates are saying.
Understanding that our Klatsch is not political.....we do have four members who are Republicans, three who are Democrats and one Independent.
In our attempt to properly analyze the financial collapse we all were in one accord when we concluded that the answer for the financial panic and collapse lies both with America's financial elite and the political elite of both Democrats and Republicans.
What we also felt was quite scary is the fact that these same so called elites are now working to see how much of our wealth is needed to bail us out.
The Klatsch members totally endorsed their opposition to this bailout of some of America's biggest corporation by you and me (the American taxpayer.
This whole mess was generated by the greed and arrogance of those who sought to make a quick buck and Wall Street played a significant part.
Calling a spade a spade we feel that the members of Congress should bear a large share of the blame and now they are pretending to come to our rescue. Think about that will you....and lets not forget that warning signs were given by a number of concerned members of Congress but this was over shadowed by Fannie and Freddie who spent millions lobbying Congress over the past decade.
As we poured our second cup of home made java and bit into our freshly baked donuts several of our members spoke out about a high number of the "elite" media who desperately seek to avoid the guilt of the left for the current crisis.
We agreed that this entire economic downfall is both the fault of Republicans and Democrats in Washington but that the liberal left media has made Barack Obama look better with these issues then John McCain.
Obama promises to change America and strongly opposes Bush's tax cuts for the rich and instead will offer tax cuts for the working families. He is pledging quality and affordable health care for all while McCain asks who is going to pay for this?
We all agreed that Obama is an attractive, intelligent and eloquent candidate but several in our Klatsch felt that this is where it ends and his associates are great cause for concern.
McCain says Obama will increase taxes and is urging voters to hold onto their wallet. He says voters could not rely on Obama's promise of tax cuts. The Republican candidate supports an energy abundance plan and a promise of a $5,000 per-family health-care tax credit tax to help pay for their health insurance.
Our Klatch unanimously agreed that tax proposals must be studied so taxes do not increase, health care should be within every ones reach, the Wall Street crisis should results in intense investigations and penalties, fines and even prison terms for those who brought this great country down on their knees, there must be concrete plans to develop an energy abundance plan, that Americans are sick and tired of big government and big cronyism, that our nation must remain strong in their efforts to fight terrorism, that small business and free markets are better than bureaucrats and socialism, that the majority of Americans are fed up with the corruption, dishonesty and arrogance of Washington and that all of us are eager to have someone honestly address the concerns we are faced with today.
Our Klatsch urges everyone to vote on November 4....this great nation of ours is depending on your decision.

There Is No High School Bowling in Sullivan County

Bowling was the largest-growing high school sport in the 2007-08 school year, continuing a decade-long trend, according to the most recent National Federation of State High School Associations participation survey.....but to this date there is no high school bowling leagues in Sullivan County.
New York State is the top participating state with more than 8,000 bowlers competing in high school programs.
Sullivan County does have several active Saturday youth leagues for pre-teens and teenagers but no high school bowling leagues.
More than 52,000 students competed at the 4,656 schools offering high school bowling competition in 2007-08, representing a 16 percent increase from the 45,064 bowlers who participated during the 2006-07 school year.
"The sustained growth of high school bowling is great news for the bowling industry as it increases the number of competitive opportunities and enhances bowling's image," said United States Bowling Congress Director of Youth Development Brian Graham. "Over the past 10 years, we have witnessed significant growth at the high school level and we expect to see this trend continue."
In the last decade, bowling participation has nearly tripled. During the 1998-99 school year, 17,930 students competed in bowling at 1,633 schools.
In 2007-08, varsity programs were offered in 20 states and 52,226 students participated in the sport. The sport also passed the 25,000 mark for both boys and girls participation with 26,652 boys participating at 2,298 schools and 25,614 girls participating at 2,358 schools.
"USBC is excited to continue our partnership with the NFHS to encourage the growth of high school bowling throughout the country," said USBC High School Manager Breanne Eoff. "Bowling is a great addition for any high school. It reaches a wider range of student-athletes than traditional high school sports and teaches teamwork, preparation and commitment."
States offering varsity bowling for boys and girls in 2007-08 were Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. Iowa and Washington offered girls varsity programs only, South Carolina had private school varsity programs, and Minnesota offered adaptive bowling for students with physical or cognitive disabilities.
The USBC High School program works to continue this upward trend by guiding all levels of high school bowling, providing rules and instructional opportunities. USBC High School offers a free membership program, which enables coaches to nominate outstanding bowlers to the national Dexter/USBC High School All-American Team, and provides high-score recognition to student-athletes. Coaches also receive resource materials such as the USBC Coaches Guidebook and USBC High School guide.
Bowling not only offers inexpensive start-up and maintenance costs but also allows students an opportunity to become involved with their high schools, lays the foundation for a lifetime sport and helps athletes earn scholarships and bowl in college.
The United States Bowling Congress High School program actively offers guidance to all levels of high school bowling by providing rules, instructional opportunities, awards and industry resources to ensure the success of high school bowling nationwide. USBC High School is a resource for school administrators, high school state athletic associations, state proprietor associations and industry member organizations in the creation and maintenance of high school bowling programs.

KULICK'S MASTERS GOLD FINISHES OFF STRONG WEEK FOR TEAM USA

SANTIAGO, Chile - Kelly Kulick's Masters victory capped off a dominating week by Team USA at the 2008 Pan American Bowling Confederation Women's Championships as it swept all six gold medals, won five silver medals and three bronze medals.

Kulick of Union, N.J., knocked off Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., 2-1, in the best two out of three games championship match. With two strikes in the final frame, Kulick locked up the title with a 227-219 win in the deciding game.

"I think people are going to look at the results and think this was an easy week for us, but it wasn't," said Kulick, who won gold medals in Masters, all-events, team, trios and doubles. "There's a lot of tough competition in our zone, and we worked really hard to win every single medal. To end the week with the Masters title is unbelievable."

Johnson closed out Game 1 with eight consecutive strikes in a 255-220 victory that was never in doubt. In Game 2, Kulick struck on six of her first seven shots and Johnson never mounted much of a challenge as Kulick evened the match with a 236-220 win to force the deciding game.

In the semifinals, Kulick overcame a 258-235 opening game loss to Mexico's Sandra Gongora to win the next two games 221-182 and 224-204. In a matchup of Team USA members, Johnson knocked off Diandra Asbaty of Chicago 245-226 and 217-202. Gongora and Asbaty shared the bronze medal.

The United States had a chance to sweep the Masters medals, but Carolyn Dorin-Ballard of North Richland Hills, Texas, fell one spare short of winning her quarterfinal match against Gongora. Dorin-Ballard left the 4-6-7 split in the 10th frame to lose to Gongora, 587-577, in the three-game, total pins match.

Wendy Macpherson of Henderson, Nev., was also knocked out in the quarterfinals, losing to Johnson, 663-611. Lynda Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, dropped her opening round match to Joann Sanesac of Canada, 694-637.

The three Masters medals wrapped up a dominating week by Team USA. Out of a possible 16 medals the United States could win, it took home 14. The exceptions being the doubles bronze medal and one of the Masters bronze medals.

The 2008 PABCON Women's Championships features 16 countries from the American Zone competing in singles, doubles, trios, team, Masters and all-events.

Here & There Column 10-21-08

This alpaca looked me straight in the eye but would not smile when I said, "say cheese."

Something For Everyone at Harvest Festivals

The big name entertainers had left with great impressions of the now famous Bethel Woods Center For The Arts and eight great Sundays followed this entertainment with the 10th Annual Harvest Festival where we all enjoyed local fresh food, talented performers, hand crafted treasures and many community initiatives.
Local farmers and artisans were presented with a great venue and buying locally brings much to the local economy.
This weekend tradition definitely marks our transition from summer into fall and offered us great food and the opportunity to share time with local authors, artists and performers.
The event schedule from August 24 through October 12 brought us everything from the Wine Festival to the annual Chili Cook-Off.
All of the Sunday events were outstanding.
Being an ardent animal lover we got very fascinated by the beauty of the alpacas at the August 31 Alpaca Festival where there were exhibits featuring live alpacas and alpaca breeders who answered questions and gave interesting information on the history of alpaca farming.
Spinners and weavers demonstrated how the fiber is made and a boutique offered shawls, scarves, hats, gloves, sweaters, jackets and dresses.
We found the alpacas as being cute and attractive.....just love their colors and they seem to have such a good temperament.
We were told they love the climate here in Sullivan County and the cold weather does not bother them as they are originally from an area that has cold weather. We've were told that they are fun to be around and are very playful at times.
All just part of the great annual Harvest Festival at Bethel Woods which is in part supported by the Gerry Foundation.
Thanks Bethel Woods for a great summer and fall venue.

The Bowling Tip
By Mike Luongo

Bowlers: This week's tip is for all bowlers regardless of their skill level and it has to do with understanding the correct body position needed to execute a bowling shot and being able to duplicate it.
If you were to stand straight on the approach, facing the pins, letting the ball rest on you hand, you could not swing the ball straight without hitting your hip.
This is impossible to do without swinging the Ball around your hip because the ball is too big. This "roundhouse swing" is not able to be able to be duplicated shot after shot.
Therefore, you might be in a position to be able to swing the ball toward your desired target without any obstacles.
The tip: Get your head as far right (or to the left if you are left-handed) and tilt your bowling shoulder slightly downward.
Contrary ot what some of your fellow bowlers might tell you, you must drop your shoulder toward the floor in order to avoid the "roundhouse swing." At the same time, slightly open your hips and shoulder and you will be able to swing your arm straight toward your target time and time again.
Due to different physiologist, the exact position may vary slightly from person to person. Bur when correctly positioned, you can use gravity to control the tempo of your swing.
Note: If you were to shoot a game of pool, or go to a range and shoot a bow or rifle, note the position your head would have to be in to be effective in these activities. Also, next time you watch professional bowling on TV, make note of the bowler's body positions.
Mike Luongo is technically certified through IBPSIA as a Pro Shop Operator and Master Instructor. He is also a Silver Level Coach with the United Stated Bowling Congress (USBC) and is also the Northeast Regional Sales Manager with the Storm and Roto Grip Bowling Ball Company. Here & There Column 10-14-08

Dissolve The Village Of Liberty?

Dissolving the Village of Liberty initially sounds like an easy task but there has been much discussion in years past on this same subject with no action taken.
Even after an October 16 public hearing from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Town of Liberty Senior Citizens building the issue can only be put to a village vote on the March ballet if the village board decides to order the referendum.
What's at stake here are two proposals.
One would keep the village government and merge duplicated services like public works and the justice courts.
A total dissolution of the village is a second proposal which could merge the current Village Police Department into a Town Police Department but only serving its current service area.
If the decision is made to keep the village government in place and merge some departments it would save a village taxpayer with property assessed at $150,000 a total of $177 a year while town residents living outside the village would see a tax hike of $75.
A total dissolution of the village could save a village taxpayer with the same assessment anywhere from $364 to $1,300 and town residents would pay an increase of $114 per year to $422.
There isn't too much that can justify two municipalities operating within a five to ten mile area but decisions like this are bound to be controversial and of course very political.
There also has to be ways to equal out taxes for both the present town and village areas...good government can make this happen for the benefit of all.
Lets see what village and town residents have to say.....then it will be up to the Liberty village board now controlled by Republican Trustee's Shirley Lindsley, Richard Winters and David Simons. Democrat Mayor William "Rube" Smith and Democrat Trustee Deputy Mayor Joan Stoddard are the minority members of the village board.

The Bowling Tip
By Mike Luongo

Bowlers: This week's tip is for parents with children who either bowl in a youth league or bowl regularly with their own equipment.
Parents, when is the last time you had your child's fit checked on their bowling ball at your local pro shop?
Children tend to grow quickly and the gripping holes in their bowling balls must be adjusted to accommodate this growth. Bowling with poor-fitting equipment can become frustrating and uncomfortable. In most cases, it will only take a minute or two for adjustments to be made.
Also, if your child has his or her own bowling shoes, you can check the size yourself to see if the fit is acceptable. Do not wait for blisters to form on the toes.
Remember, the game is meant to be enjoyed, not to be a form of torture.

The information pipeline in the sport of bowling sometimes is one of the most difficult areas to gain perfection.
The Tri-County NY USBC Association is studying ways to improve in this area and will launch a Web site in the near future
A Web site is a great source of information and communication within our great sport is a major problem.
League presidents and secretaries should be major areas in getting information including bowling scores and tournament data out to their members and the general bowling community.
So many league secretaries believe that just posting their current standings in their local bowling establishments is all they are required to do and in performing this duty they fail to understand that they are the pipeline for communications to work as it should.
League secretaries are the voice of their leagues but it has been estimated by USBC officials who have studied this problem that less than 10 percent of what leagues and associations produce is filtered to the bowling community.
The area that can help is that league;s chief executives should be at the forefront of the dispersal of information.
Bowling should reach out to league and association members and the general bowling community by using a number of tools like flyer's, news media and the Internet. E-mail can also be very effective and requires league secretaries to obtain e-mail address' from their members.
Redundancy and repetition is helpful in creating an effective communication program.
Let's all chip in and work to improve the overall health of our bowling community and the great sport of bowling.....getting the word out will help to increase participation in everything we do.

The Bavarian Musik Verein band from Binghamton and the Poughkeepsie Schuplatter Folk Dancers bring true German heritage to the annual Von Steuben Parade and Germanfest sponsored yearly by the Yulan Fire Department.
Unfortunately the threat of rain on the day of this event affected the parade and those who had planned on marching but the heritage honoring the Revolutionary War General
Baron Von Steuben and this Germanfest certainly was evident in the variety of German foods, desserts and music.
A number of folks mentioned to us that they would have liked the opportunity to purchase German souvenirs (other than Beer steins) and clothing (like tee shirts honoring the German heritage. Several also noted the absence of real German liquid refreshments.
We certainly applaud the Yulan Fire Department for the many hours of hard work in preparation for the staging of this event which of course is a major fund raiser for this fire department.
The Germanfest takes place following the parade at Fireman's Field and here is where most of the true German traditions take shape and true spirit of the Germanfest comes alive.
The German heritage and tradition is very evident with the wearing of the lederhosen, listening and dancing to traditional German and Bavarian music, eating delicious German food (and don't forget that great chocolate German cake)......and then there is also the heisting of the beer mugs....made famous by several German songs.
But the highlight of the day is listening to the Bavarian Musik Verein (Binghamton Band) and watching the Poughkeepsie based Schluplatter Folk Dancers as they bring their precision and professionalism and the true heritage of the German people to the little hamlet of Yulan.
The German community loves their heritage and we say thanks to the Yulan Fire Department for letting it all happen.

The Bowling Tip
By Mike Luongo

Bowlers: This weeks tip applies mostly to those bowlers who are using modern bowling balls.
You may not know that the modern bowling ball is porous with several different densities and has numerous chemicals in its cover stocks.
As these ball change temperature, the cover and core will expand and contract. Due to the different materials used for the core, inner core and cover, this fluctuation occurs at different rates.
Leaving the ball in a car when temperatures are severe, very hot or very cold, the expansion and contraction causes severe stress on the cover. This stress is even greater when a cold ball is used to bowl while it is still cold. This may cause your ball to crack.
So this tip is not only educational but let it serve as a reminder to take care of your bowling ball investment....avoid the experience that the above mentioned bowler went through....and if you carry your balls to and from the center.....don't leave them in your car

Ed's Outlook

Syracuse based Lane # 1 and Richie Sposato continues to improve and add to their bowling ball arsenal.
They recently announced the creation of the new BussBomb, a new force in the bowling industry.
The BuzzBomb is packed with their all new double sided "Doomsday Bomb(2) core which generates double the torque, creating double the hook on the backend.
"Surrounding this nuclear power plant is our all new Pure Grip solid reactive cover-stock," Lane # 1 said.
This new formula grips the lanes on the heaviest oil and Lane # 1 said, "you won't believe your eyes when you see this midlane Hook Monster explode with a huge backend," Lane #1 noted.
The new ball is purple/black in color, has a hooking rating of 120 out of 120, has a backend hook of 80%, has a flare potential of 5 plus, has 3-piece construction, has a 1000 grit dull finish and is available in 13-16 pound weights.
Sposato says his company is helping to change the bowling industry by "bringing the sport of bowling to new and exciting levels."
Sposato, a former pro bowler, has also authored a number of writings and columns.
One of the areas that makes the Buzzsaw line of bowling products different is the unique design of the inner weight, which is largely responsible for the way a ball reacts when rolling down the lane. The balls with their diamond-shaped weight (and the laws of physics) is said to spin longer, faster and creates 20 percent more inertia than any other shape.
For additional information about the new addition to the Lane # 1 products call 1-800-526-3661 or log onto the official web site, http://www.lane1bowling.com/
