Tri-Valley's Sam Tingley wears the number 33 on
his varsity boys basketball jersey and this outstanding 17-year-old senior has
put a lot of 3's on the scoreboard with his patented three-point scoring
ability.
But his talent does not end there as he also plays the role as
the Tri-Valley Bear mascot performing all kind of acts during Lady Bear
games.
During these games Sam can be seen greeting and hugging the
starting five during the introductions and then he will slide in a number of
somersaults, push-ups to commemorate the Lady Bears tally at the end of each
quarter and then the tired pose when he just lays flat out on his back on the
court.
Sam has been playing the sport of basketball since starting in
the Bear Cub program at the age of nine graduating then into 7th and 8th grade
modified, two years on the Junior Varsity and now spending his second year on
the varsity.
He credits his dad, Coach Brian Tingley, for introducing him to
the sport which he noted, "I fell in love with."
"Between ninth and tenth grades I started to get the feel for my
three-pointer as I l learned how to read screens which is important in getting
open for this shot, "Sam said.
The Tri-Valley guard likes to shoot the corner three-pointer,
"an area where I practice from a lot and have confidence in," Tingley
noted.
Scholastically Sam is ranked seventh in his class and hopes to
be able to play college basketball. He also participates in the sport of
golf.
Sam leads this years varsity team in total points scored,
assists, steals and in points scored per shot.
When asked how he got into being the Bear Mascot, which he has
been doing for the past three years, Sam pointed out that "a number of my
fellow team mates and students encouraged me to do this and it allows me to be
an idiot for a little while."
