Wachter Named Fullbright
Specialist
Sullivan County veterinarian Dr. Allen Wachter, who also
serves as an Associate Professor at SUNY Delhi has been selected as a Fulbright
Specialist by the J. Willian Fulbright Scholarship Board.
Dr. Wachter pursued a Fullbright exchange because "teaching
is a way I can give back to the profession, especially in countries such as
Africa where their lives depend so much on the care of their
animals."
He posses prior experience working in Africa as a missionary
in Zambia where he helped build an orphanage. Upon coming back to the United
States he sensed, "that I needed to do more" and that led him to pursue the
Fulbright exchange.
Allen is currently being considered for two projects in
Sub-Sahara, Africa and as a Fulbright specialist he will be matched with an
overseas academic institution that has requested assistance via the Fulbright
Commission.
Fulbright Specialists typically serve two to six weeks in
projects that focus on strengthening and supporting the development needs of the
host institutions. The projects Dr. Wachter is being considered for is to
develop a veterinary technician program at the University of Namibia and to
teach large animal management to veterinary science students at Mekelle
University in Ethiopia.
Alan noted that African nations go out of their way to
welcome visiting faculty because their universities "simply have no one to teach
the courses."
Dr. Wachter presently serves as director of SUNY Delhi's
bachelor's degree program in Veterinary Technology Management and also serves as
an associate pastor at the Horton Brook Free Methodist Church. He is also the
author of a children's book, Dance of the Bees.
Being named a Fulbright Specialist is an outstanding honor
for Sullivan County's well known veterinarian Dr. Allen Wachter.
