Golfing Highlights Column 6-5-09

Former Sullivan County (Liberty and Monticello) resident Dave Cross, left, Project Coordinator for the Construction Division of Southern Land Company, and Westhaven Golf Club Course Superintendent Jerry Craven, observe the new golf facility scheduled to open this summer.

This is one of the many different types of homes that are being constructed and sold at the Westhaven Southern Land Company community that is adjacent to the new Westhaven Golf Club. This community is located near historic Franklin, Tenn., some 15 miles south of downtown Nashville.
Water comes into play on many of the fairways at the Westhaven Golf Club.

This bulldozer is being used to construct a new green at the Westhaven Golf Club. Not many golfers get to see what the early stages of a golf green look like and this proved to be a great learning process for this columnist.
Former Sullivan County Man
Has A Hand In New Golf Course

Former Sullivan County New York (Liberty and Monticello) resident Dave Cross has a hand in the construction of the Westhaven Golf Club designed by Arthur Hills at the Westhaven Southern Land Company community located near Franklin, Tenn. some 15 miles south of downtown Nashville.
Westhaven is one of the largest traditional neighborhood developments in the Southeast and currently has more than $1 billion of real estate under development.
Dave Cross worked for many years in Sullivan County for the New York State Electric & Gas Corporation (NYSEG) where he was active in a number of civic organizations and was an active member of the Liberty United Methodist Church. He retired from NYSEG some 11 years ago, moved to Tennessee and is now in his 10th year as Project Coordinator for the Construction Division of Southern Land Company.
He is responsible for the procuring of materials and equipment to get the land ready for residential and commercial building at Westhaven.
During a consulting tour of Southeast golf facilities and vacationing visits to the Nashville, Tenn and Paducah, Ky. areas we penciled in a must-see stop to visit with Dave and observe part of the construction phrase of this course designed by the Internationally recognized firm of Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest and Associates.
Course Superintendent Jerry Craven provided me with a special riding tour of what a great golf course looks like in its early stages of development. We found this course design to be conducive to all types of skill levels and is a "core" routing concept which means that homes will not be located on the course, creating a pure golf experience.
This par 72 course will play 7,015 total yards from the golf tees. Each hole will feature five separate tees and this outstanding setting is created along the Harpeth River.
Seeing the early construction stages and part of the cultivations of new fairways and greens is a true reality check as to what it really takes to build a new golf course and the experience and dedication of what the course superintendent is responsible for. Many golfers and golf columnist don't get this type of opportunity and really don't have a clue as to what it takes to build and develop a new golf course. Thanks to Jerry Craven and Dave Cross we learned that it takes more then a lot of money to build great golf courses like the Westhaven Golf Club.
This private golf club under Head Golf Professional Chris Cauthen opens for play in July or August of this year and we just know that those having an opportunity to play Westhaven will have the greatest golfing experience of their lifetime.

The Golf Tip
By Robert Menges

Simple Drill To Improve Your Swing Tempo.
Here's a simple drill to improve your swing tempo.
Go to the driving range and alternate between hitting shots with your short irons and then your long irons.
For example....hit one shot with your wedge and the next shot with your 3 wood. Hit the next shot with your 8 iron then the next with your 3 iron. The next shot with your 9 iron and the next with your driver.
And when you're doing this try to make the swing with the longer club the same pace as your swing with the shorter clubs.
The late and great Payne Stewart used to do this all the time and if you remember his swing, it was as smooth as silk.
So do this exercise and do it often so you too can have a smooth, rhythmical swing from one club to the next.
