Bowling Highlights Column 11-30-12

Stony Point Bowler In World Cup

United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Team USA Trials champions and collegiate standouts Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, NY and Marshall Kent of Yakima, Wash. are presently competing in Wroclaw, Poland, taking part in the  QubicaAMF World Cup.
One of the most prestigious singles titles in the world, the World Cup is being  contested for the 48th year. The event began with the opening round of qualifying this past Monday.
Kent, who bowls collegiately for Robert Morris-Illinois, and McEwan, who competes at Fairleigh Dickinson, earned the opportunity to compete in the event by virtue of winning the United States Bowling Congress Team USA Trials last January.
"Marshall and Danielle both showed their extreme versatility by winning the Team USA Trials on four grueling lane conditions," Team USA coach Rod Ross said. "Based on their performance at the Team USA Trials and on their success for Team USA this year, I believe competing in the World Cup is a positive next step in their growth and development as some of our future stars."
Kent and McEwan have already had experience in international competition this year as members of Team USA and Junior Team USA.
Over the summer, Kent and McEwan both earned medals at the World Tenpin Bowling Association World Youth Championships in Bangkok, Thailand. Kent earned medals in all five events, while McEwan earned a gold medal in team.
Kent also competed for Team USA in the Pan American Bowling Confederation Adult Championships, where he picked up two medals.
The World Cup began Monday with the first of four rounds of qualifying. Each round consists of five games, and the field will be cut to the top 24 men and top 24 women for eight additional games. The top eight in each division will then advance to round-robin match play to determine the top three men and top three women for the stepladder finals.
The World Cup is the largest international bowling tournament in the world in terms of the number of countries competing. This year's event is expected to feature 86 men and 67 women from 87 countries.
The United States Bowling Congress serves as the national governing body for the sport. USBC is a membership organization that provides standardized rules, regulations and benefits to make bowling fair and fun for everyone.

Ed's Outlook

Although she admitted to not being a bowler Sullivan County District 5 Legislator Cindy Kurpil Gieger enjoyed herself and watched her husband and niece bowl in the November 18 Storm-Roto Grip Demonstration day at Callicoon Kristal Bowl. We made sure that Cindy got the opportunity to meet PBA Tour bowler Ryan Shafer.
Bowlers who took advantage of the Storm-Roto Grip Demonstration had the great opportunity to meet three of the finest gentlemen in the professional sport of bowling
Shafer showed his true love for bowling by reaching out to bowlers and giving them instructions on how to improve their game.
Mike and Mickey Luongo, representing Storm and Roto Grip, showed just a tip of the outstanding knowledge they posses with instruction and bowling ball knowledge that area bowlers have appreciated for many years.
We truly thank Ryan, Mike and Mickey for bringing class to the sport of bowling in Sullivan County.

Bowling Tip
By Mike Luongo

For bowlers, a goal ladder is a logical plan of attack to improve your game.
To start, identify the goal at the top of the ladder and possible steps or rungs. Then determine how to put the plan in motion and actually climb the ladder to get to the top and reach the goal.
Sound simple? It can be if you approach it right.
Goals need to be measurable and attainable.
The Tip: Carefully set your goals to ensure they are realistic and within your control.
First make sure you are willing to do what it takes to get better.....you won't get there with a half-hearted  effort.
Second step is to meet with a USBC certified coach. The coach will help you agree to a plan on how to move your game to the next level.
Every plan should be custom made for the athlete  and monitoring of that plan is required to stay focused on the objective.
Evaluate your progress periodically with your coach and make any necessary adjustments.
A goal ladder can be a fun climb and well worth it.
Good luck in finding and scaling your ladder.
