Tom Watson at this year's British Open

Grace In Accepting Defeat

We all could learn a lesson as a result of how a pure gentleman named Tom Watson accepted defeat in the recent British Open golf tournament.
At 59-years of age Watson missed a record-making achievement but his grace in accepting defeat is a life lesson in winning the real race before us.
The British Open is a challenge for any golfer but Tom Watson came within one stroke of being the oldest player ever to win a major golf championship.
And he was actually looking at a 10 foot putt on the 18th hole of the final round for the win and millions watching the event expressed pure disappointment as he missed the putt and then lost in a four-hole playoff for a second place finish.
At 59-years of age everyone was urging him on and applauding his every effort. Sports writers and commentators were also hoping to write and report on Tom's great efforts in this championship tournament.
How did a true gentleman and great great golfer like Tom Watson face the defeat which if he had won truly would have given him golf immortality. His remark about his loss was, "there is still a vacuum in the stomach, but this too shall pass. Honestly, its not the most important thing in life." Wow.....what a statement and what great advice for making our lives work at the highest level.....years of experience bring the maturity of perspective to setbacks dealt by life.
We look at so many difficulties today where folks are fighting the global economic downturn, where others have loss jobs, have had a personal relationship go bad and many others who have been ravaged by stock market losses.
Can we learn a lesson from words like .....this too shall pass?
Tom Watson lost the British Open and he faced adversity by accepting the reality of the loss. He knows there is a life beyond.
The self-pitying frame of mind is not part of Watson's professional golf career. When you get knocked down and face defeat, get up, get out and move on.
Grace in his acceptance of what happened clearly showed the greatness in Tom Watson ....teaching us all a great lesson.
