Josh Walker puts together another solid outing, but Syracuse falls to Rochester, 3-2, on Thursday night
Inbox
Syracuse, NY - The Rochester Red Wings used a two-run home run from their pitcher Luis Reyes in the fifth inning and a go-ahead RBI single from Donovan Casey in the ninth to top the Syracuse Mets, 3-2, at NBT Bank Stadium on Thursday night. Despite the loss, Syracuse starting pitcher Josh Walker was great on the mound, delivering six innings, giving up two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out one.
Syracuse (38-59) struck first with a run in the bottom of the second. They loaded the bases with no outs after Travis Blankenhorn walked, David Thompson was hit by a pitch, and Khalil Lee walked. Cheslor Cuthbert then came to the plate and hit into a 6-4-3 double play, but Blankenhorn scored to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. Cervenka then flied out to end the inning.
Rochester (42-54) took the lead in the top of the fifth, thanks to their pitcher. Donovan Casey hit a leadoff double, and then Ali Castillo and Jecksson Flores were both retired. Reyes then came to the plate, and on a 3-2 pitch, blasted a two-run homer over the center-field wall to give the Red Wings a 2-1 lead.
The Mets tied it in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a Mason Williams solo home run onto the Salt City Deck in right field. The homer was Williams’s fifth of the season made it a 2-2 contest.
In the top of the ninth and the score still 2-2, Mike Ford hit a leadoff double off Mets reliever Franklyn Kilomé. Blake Swihart came in as a pinch runner, and Casey hit a go-ahead single, scoring Swihart to put Rochester ahead 3-2.
Red Wings reliever Ronald Peña came on to pitch the bottom of the ninth for the Red Wings and delivered a 1-2-3 inning to earn his first save of the season.
The Mets and Red Wings return to NBT Bank Stadium on Friday evening. Syracuse right-hander Adam Oller will take the hill against Rochester left-hander Seth Romero. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.

Sean Rash Wins PBA Chesapeake Open for 17th PBA Tour Title
Defeats top seed Tom Daugherty in championship match
Chesapeake, Va.—On his 39th birthday, Sean Rash claimed his 17th Guaranteed Rate PBA Tour title by winning the PBA Chesapeake Open at AMF Western Branch Lanes. Rash, the No. 2 seed, eliminated 20-time PBA Tour champion Tommy Jones in the semifinal match, then defeated top seed Tom Daugherty, who won two of his four career titles earlier this season, in the championship match.
Daugherty finished with a 212 game, forcing Rash to strike on his first shot in the 10th frame to have a chance. After a re-rack, Rash rolled the strike he needed, then fired his next shot down the middle to get enough count to make it official. Rash finished with a score of 228 to win his first title since the 2020 PBA Cheetah Championship.
The victory moves Rash out of a tie with Hall of Famer Jason Couch and into a tie with Hall of Famer Carmen Salvino in all-time titles. It also jumps Rash into seventh in the PBA Summer Tour points race, which will net him a share of the $40,000 bonus prize fund. With his second-place finish, Daugherty also moved inside the top 10, finishing one spot behind Rash in eighth.
Darren Tang, who won his first PBA Tour title last weekend in the PBA Bowlerstore.com Classic presented by Moxy’s Xtra Pair, finished seventh in Chesapeake to clinch the $20,000 bonus for leading the PBA Summer Tour points race. Tang finished in the top 12 in four of the five Summer Tour events to build a 35-point margin over runner-up Anthony Simonsen.
Tang entered the final event of the PBA Summer Tour with a 65-point lead over Simonsen, who finished sixth in Chesapeake, which was not enough to catch Tang. Simonsen will receive $7,000 for placing second.

Boyle honored by Triple-A East for week of August 16-22
Right-hander pitched seven-inning no-hitter on August 19 at Worcester
MOOSIC, PA (August 23, 2021) – Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders pitcher Sean Boyle has been honored as Triple-A East’s Pitcher-of-the-Week for August 16 through 22. On August 19, Boyle tossed a no-hitter in game two of a doubleheader against the Worcester Red Sox at Polar Park; a 5-0 RailRiders victory.
Boyle, 24, made his first-ever Triple-A start on August 19 and the seventh of his professional career since being drafted by the New York Yankees in the 25th round out of Dallas Baptist University in 2018. He walked one and hit one batter in the complete-game effort, striking out six and throwing 95 pitches to no-hit the WooSox. The right-hander had never thrown more than 66 pitches in any of his previous 45 pro outings.
Boyle’s no-hitter was the second by the RailRiders this season, joining the performance by Luis Gil, Reggie McClain and Stephen Ridings on July 21 against Rochester, which also netted Gil Pitcher-of-the-Week honors for his effort. Boyle also worked the first four innings of a seven-inning no-hitter for Hudson Valley on July 10.
It was the first seven-inning, complete game no-hitter by a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre pitcher since Robert Ellis on June 6, 2004, against Louisville.
Boyle has pitched at three levels this season, compiling a 6-3 mark with a 2.17 earned run average over 62.1 total innings pitched.
The RailRiders continue a two-city road trip Tuesday, August 24, at Lehigh Valley and return to PNC Field on August 31 to host the Buffalo Bisons. Tickets for the upcoming 14-game homestand, which also welcomes Rochester back to PNC Field, are available online at swbrailriders.com.

Opponents and dates set Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s 2022 season
RailRiders slated to play a 144-game schedule starting on April 5, 2022
Moosic, PA (August 19, 2021) – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, are pleased to announce their schedule for the 2022 season. The RailRiders will open their season on April 5 on the road and conclude a 144-game schedule on September 21, split evenly with 72 games at home and 72 on the road.
The 2022 schedule is comprised of 23 six-game series and two three-game sets. After only playing within Triple-A East’s Northeast Division in 2021, the club will now take on division rivals 102 times and play 42 games against inter-divisional opponents. The RailRiders are in the Northeast Division along with the Buffalo Bisons (Toronto), Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Philadelphia), Rochester Red Wings (Washington), Syracuse Mets (New York Mets) and Worcester Red Sox (Boston).
“The release of the 2022 schedule is really exciting for many reasons,” stated John Adams, Team President of the RailRiders. “While having baseball back in 2021 has been a tremendous boost to our community in Northeastern Pennsylvania, the new 2022 schedule includes a full slate of games and is the first step in getting back to planning a fun and eventful lineup of promotions to coincide with top-tier baseball from the New York Yankees farm system next season.”
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre begins the 2022 season in Syracuse on April 5 and plays its home opener one week later on April 12 against the Norfolk Tides (Baltimore). The RailRiders will travel to Buffalo and host Lehigh Valley during the month as well.
The team travels to Rochester and Worcester during May, while it hosts Syracuse, a first-ever meeting with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Miami) and starts a series against Lehigh Valley at PNC Field.
Home games in June include contests against the IronPigs, Red Wings and Bisons, while road swings hit Syracuse and Toledo (Detroit). After concluding a series at home against Buffalo on July 3, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre travels to Worcester for a game on July 4. The team returns home on July 12 to host the Louisville Bats (Cincinnati). After the Triple-A All-Star break from July 18-21, the RailRiders head down the turnpike for a three-game set versus the IronPigs. They conclude July in Rochester against the Red Wings.
August opens with 12 home dates over 13 days, from August 2 through 14, with the Bisons and Red Sox welcomed to town. A 12-game, 13-day road trip to the St. Paul Saints (Minnesota) and the Omaha Storm Chasers (Kansas City) follows; the first time in history that the RailRiders will play either of those two clubs. The month ends with the first two games of a six-game set against Syracuse at PNC Field.
In September, the RailRiders host the Mets, travel to play the Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay) and return to Moosic to play Worcester. The year’s final series is another three-game set against Lehigh Valley on the road from September 19-21.
Game times and promotions will be announced later and the 2022 schedule remains subject to change.

Jesús Reyes throws another gem, Syracuse wins fifth straight with 6-1 victory over Worcester on Sunday
Inbox
Worcester, MA - The Syracuse Mets kept up their winning ways, picking up their fifth straight victory with a 6-1 win over the Worcester Red Sox on Sunday afternoon at Polar Park. The Mets took five games in the six-game set in Worcester even after losing the series opener on Tuesday. Jesús Reyes delivered another dominant outing, throwing six shutout innings of one-hit baseball while walking three batters and striking out seven. In his last four appearances, Reyes has a 0.86 ERA, allowing just two runs in 21 innings pitched.
Syracuse (34-54) put the first runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Josh Reddick singled. David Thompson followed with a two-run home run that he crushed over the left field wall to put the Mets ahead, 2-0.
Worcester (46-42) didn’t get their first hit until the bottom of the fifth inning when Ryan Fitzgerald picked up a one-out single. However, Fitzgerald was caught stealing second base with Jeremy Rivera at the plate, and then Reyes struck out Rivera for the third out of the frame.
The Mets extended their lead in the top of the eighth. Wilfredo Tovar worked a leadoff walk, and then Reddick connected on a single, putting runners at first and third base. Thompson followed with another clutch hit, this time a two-run double to extend the lead to 4-0. Thompson was responsible for four of Syracuse’s six runs batted in on Sunday. After Brandon Brennan came out of the bullpen for Worcester, Chance Sisco doubled to score Thompson and make it a 5-0 advantage for the Mets.
Syracuse added another run in the top of the ninth. Mason Williams led off with a single, and with Tovar at the plate, Williams advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Tovar then delivered with an RBI single to hand the Mets a 6-0 lead.
Worcester scored its lone run in the bottom of the ninth with a Jack López leadoff home run to make it 6-1 with Syracuse still in front. That was the only run and hit allowed by Mets reliever Akeem Bostick who pitched three innings out of the bullpen. Combined, Reyes and Bostick allowed only two Worcester hits in the game.
The Mets now come back to Syracuse for a 13-game homestand. The action begins from NBT Bank Stadium on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. when Syracuse hosts the Buffalo Bisons.

Syracuse sweeps Friday doubleheader against Worcester with eight-run comeback in game one and wire-to-wire win in game two
Inbox
Worcester, MA - The Syracuse Mets overcame an eight-run deficit in game one and led most of the way in game two to sweep Friday night’s doubleheader against the Worcester Red Sox with Syracuse winning the first game, 10-8, and the second game, 5-4.
In game one, Syracuse (32-54) trailed, 8-6, going to the top of the seventh inning: the final inning of game one of the doubleheader. Both Patrick Mazeika and Wagner Lagrange started the frame with singles, putting runners at first and second base. After Khalil Lee struck out, Cheslor Cuthbert singled to load the bases. Mason Williams then grounded into a fielder’s choice where Cuthbert was out at second, but the throw to first base was low and not secured by Worcester first baseman Joey Meneses, so Williams was safe at first to keep the game going. Lagrange went to third base on the play, and Mazeika scored to cut the Syracuse deficit to one, 8-7. The Mets then sent Josh Reddick to the plate as a pinch hitter for his first plate appearance since signing a minor league contract with the New York Mets on Friday. Down in the count, 0-2, Reddick crushed a pitch over the 22-foot-high Worcester Wall in right field for a go-ahead, three-run home run that gave Syracuse a 10-8 lead, completing the comeback from being down, 8-0.
Mets reliever Tom Hackimer came into the game in the bottom of the seventh and pitched a 1-2-3 inning to secure the come-from-behind 10-8 victory.
Worcester (46-40) jumped out to an early lead in game one in the bottom of the first inning. Yairo Muñoz was at third base, Delino DeShields was at first, and Johan Mieses was at the plate with one out, Mieses struck out and on the strike three pitch, DeShields stole second. On the throw to second base, Muñoz stole home to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead. DeShields advanced to third base on an errant throw to second during his steal attempt. Josh Ockimey, Jack Lopez, and Jhonny Pereda all had RBI singles later in the inning to give Worcester a 4-0 advantage.
The Red Sox extended the lead in the fourth with four runs on four hits and a Mets error that allowed a run to score to make it an 8-0 Worcester lead.
Syracuse began its comeback in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Orlando Calixte at third base and Mark Payton at first, Wilfredo Tovar doubled, scoring both Calixte and Payton to make it an 8-2 game. Mazeika followed with a single that brought home Tovar to pull the Mets within five, 8-3. Lagrange singled and Lee walked to load the bases for Cuthbert, who hit a bases clearing double off the Worcester Wall in right field, cutting the Worcester lead to two, 8-6, and setting Syracuse up for its comeback win.
Game two saw the Mets strike first in the top of the third. Cody Bohanek led off with a single, and Payton brought Bohanek home with a double to the left-field wall, giving Syracuse a 1-0 lead.
The Mets extended their lead in the top of the fifth. With Bohanek at third and Tovar at first, a wild pitch scored Bohanek to give Syracuse a 2-0 edge. Then, later in the inning with runners at first and third and two outs, Chance Sisco homered a three-run home run over the Worcester Wall in right field to stretch the Syracuse lead to 5-0.
Worcester responded in the bottom of the fifth. Jett Bandy was hit by a pitch, Jeremy Rivera walked, and Ryan Fitzgerald followed with a three-run homer to right field to cut Syracuse’s lead to two, 5-3.
In the bottom of the seventh inning. Muñoz singled and scored on a DeShields double to right-center field to pull the Red Sox within one, 5-4. Meneses then lined into a double play where DeShields was doubled off of second base for the first two outs of the frame. Mieses followed with a groundout to shortstop to end the ballgame as Syracuse won game two, 5-4, for the doubleheader sweep.
Syracuse and Worcester return to action on Saturday for the fifth game of their six-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.

Khalil Lee homered for Syracuse on Wednesday afternoon and reached base three times (Hanife Gundogdu).
Worcester, MA - The Syracuse Mets scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning en route to an 11-4 win over the Worcester Red Sox on Wednesday afternoon at Polar Park. Mets slugger Khalil Lee hit a home run for the second consecutive game in the victory. In eight games in August, Lee is hitting .360 (9-for-25) with two home runs and three RBIs.
Syracuse (30-54) led, 6-4, going into the ninth inning where the Mets proceeded to put this game away. Wagner Lagrange drilled a one-out double to center field for his first Triple-A hit. Then, Orlando Calixte connected with a pitch for an RBI single to score Lagrange and make it 7-4 Mets. After Cody Bonahek was hit by a pitch, Mark Payton singled to bring home Calixte and increase the lead to four, 8-4. Wilfredo Tovar followed with a three-run homer on his 30th birthday to put the game on ice and extend the Syracuse advantage to seven, 11-4, before Mets reliever Tom Hackimer pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth inning to secure the win for Syracuse.
Worcester (46-38) brought home the game’s first run in the bottom of the first. Delino DeShields hit a one-out double, followed by a Joey Meneses RBI single to put the Woo Sox ahead 1-0.
After not getting a hit in the first three innings, the Mets put together a big top of the fourth to take the lead. Payton led off with a single, and Tovar followed with a walk. After Travis Blankenhorn lined out, Lee was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Patrick Mazeika then ripped a two-run double down the line in right field to give the Mets the 2-1 lead. After Chance Sisco walked, Lagrange hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Lee and make it 3-1 Syracuse.
The Mets scored another hat trick in the top of the fifth inning, adding an additional three runs. Cody Bohanek hit a leadoff single, and Payton followed with a ground out into a fielder’s choice where Bohanek was out at second base, but Payton was safe at first. After Tovar lined out, Blankenhorn hit a double to center field to score Bohanek and increase the lead to three, 4-1. Lee then followed with a two-run home run to make it 6-1 Mets.
Worcester cut into the deficit in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to two home runs. Jack Lopez hit a leadoff home run to make it 6-2 with Syracuse still in front. Then with two outs, Yairo Muñoz lifted a solo homer to left field to bring the Woo Sox within three, 6-3.

PBA Summer Tour Moves to Coldwater for Bowlerstore.com Classic Presented by Moxy’s Xtra Pair
Penultimate PBA Summer Tour event will be held at Pla-Mor Lanes in Coldwater, Ohio
Coldwater, Ohio—The fourth of five PBA Summer Tour events as part of the 2021 Guaranteed Rate PBA Tour season begins Saturday from Pla-Mor Lanes with a full day of qualifying. Three squads will bowl eight games each beginning at 8 a.m. ET and the event will culminate with the four-player stepladder finals Sunday at 5 p.m. ET. Every round of competition will be streamed live on FloBowling.
Here are some of the top storylines heading into the 2021 PBA Bowlerstore.com Classic presented by Moxy’s Xtra Pair:
Tommy Jones Defends 2019 Title
Because the event was not held last season, 2019 champion Tommy Jones enjoyed an extra year as reigning champion in Coldwater. Jones has performed well on the 2021 Summer Tour, including a sixth-place finish in Jonesboro, Ark. this past weekend following a finish of fifth, with Shannon Pluhowsky, in the Striking Against Breast Cancer Mixed Doubles.
Coldwater and Major Champions
Each of the three players to win at Pla-Mor Lanes since the event became a national PBA Tour stop are major champions. Rhino Page, who won in Coldwater in 2017, went on to win the U.S. Open for his first major two months later. Jakob Butturff, the 2018 winner in Coldwater, won his first major the following season in the 2019 USBC Masters. Jones was already a two-time major champion when he won the Bowlerstore.com Classic in 2019, but still found a way to make post-Coldwater history a few months later, bowling 300 in the title match to win the 2020 PBA Hall of Fame Classic during his own Hall of Fame-induction weekend.
Total Pins and Frequent Cuts
The second day of competition features a different format, which we’ll also see in the PBA Chesapeake Open, from the previous Summer Tour events. After eight games of qualifying, the top third of the field will advance to a four-game cashers round on Sunday. Following the cashers round, the top 16 will advance to bowl three more games, after which the top eight move on to bowl two more games. After the round of eight, the top four players based on 17 games of total pinfall will advance to the stepladder finals.
Tackett Holds Narrow Advantage in Summer Tour Points Race
Although he missed the cut, finishing 52nd in the PBA Jonesboro Open was just enough to keep EJ Tackett in front of the PBA Summer Tour points race with two events to play. Tackett is now a mere 30 points ahead of Anthony Simonsen, who finished third in each of the first two events and 13th in Jonesboro. PBA Lubbock Sports Open champion Shawn Maldonado is third and PBA Jonesboro Open winner Matt Russo is fourth. Butturff, who finished third in Jonesboro and won in 2018 in Coldwater, is in fifth. The best 10 players at the conclusion of all five events will receive a share of the $40,000 bonus prize fund, with the top player earning $20,000.

Matt Russo Wins PBA Jonesboro Open for First Career PBA Tour Title
Defeats No. 1 seed Mykel Holliman in championship match
Jonesboro, Ark.—Twenty-four-year-old Matt Russo became the newest PBA Tour champion when he defeated Mykel Holliman, 225-197, in the championship match to win the PBA Jonesboro Open at Hijinx Family Entertainment Center. Russo qualified in the second position for the stepladder finals and eliminated seven-time PBA Tour champion Jakob Butturff in the semifinal match before besting Holliman.
When Russo, who would finish the title match first, came up in the ninth and 10th frames, Holliman’s maximum possible score was 210. Russo spared in the ninth and struck on his first shot in the 10th, meaning he’d need count to clinch the victory. Russo struck two more times, emphatically posting a 225 for his first PBA Tour title.
Holliman, the 2019 PBA Tour Rookie of the Year, was in third place after first-round qualifying, second after cashers qualifying and then won all eight of his matches to earn the top seed for the stepladder. His final match win, during position round, was against Russo to clinch the top seed.
That match was Russo’s only loss in match play, who lurked near the middle of the pack, albeit well inside the cut, during qualifying before winning his first seven matches to claim the second seed.
Russo’s first opponent on the stepladder, Butturff, eliminated 16-year-old Eric Jones in the opening match of the stepladder finals.
Although he missed the cut to cashers qualifying, EJ Tackett earned enough points with his 52nd-place finish to retain the lead in the PBA Summer Tour points race with two events left to play. After finishing 13th in Jonesboro, Anthony Simonsen is now just 30 points back of Tackett. The 10 best players on the PBA Summer Tour will receive a portion of the $40,000 bonus prize fund, with the top performer earning $20,000.
The PBA Summer Tour resumes Saturday with qualifying for the PBA Bowlerstore.com Open Presented by Moxy’s Xtra Pair in Coldwater, Ohio.

Ponies Shut Out Sea Dogs In Series Finale
BINGHAMTON, NY – The Rumble Ponies (36-46) used strong pitching from starter Jose Butto to blank the Portland Sea Dogs (49-33) for the third time this series en-route to a 5-0 victory.
Jose Butto (2-0) pitched six scoreless innings allowing a hit with no walks and eight strikeouts. Butto allowed only two base-runners during his start with Kole Cottam reaching in the third inning on a hit-by-pitch and Grant Williams hitting a single to leadoff the sixth. SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE
RAILRIDERS
GAME REPORT
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Worcester 2 Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 1
MOOSIC, Pa. (August 7, 2021) – Three Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders pitchers combined to strike out 14 Worcester Red Sox batters in a 2-1 loss on Saturday night at PNC Field.
Going up against seven-time American League All-Star and MLB rehabber Chris Sale, RailRiders opener Brian Keller turned one of his best outings of the season. He tossed 3.0 scoreless innings, scattering three hits while striking out five and not allowing a walk.
He was followed by Sean Boyle, making his Triple-A debut. Boyle turned in 4.0 scoreless frames, allowing four hits, striking out five and walking one. Before this year, the right-hander had never pitched in full season ball, and this season had only seven appearances above Low-A.
The RailRiders offense sputtered against the Red Sox, garnering just two hits against Sale – a double by Thomas Milone and an Andrew Velazquez triple – and nothing else until the ninth inning.
In the top of the ninth, Adam Warren (3-2) allowed a two-run home run to Tate Matheny after a 10-pitch battle to finally break the scoreless deadlock.
Donny Sands led off the bottom of the ninth with a double against Zack Kelly, and scored on an Armando Alvarez groundout to cut the deficit to 2-1. However, Kelly settled down to retire the side and seal his first save of the season.
SWB completes its series with Worcester on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. The RailRiders send LHP Matt Krook (2-3, 4.97) to the mound, while the Red Sox counter with RHP Kutter Crawford (1-1, 3.27).
