Bowling Tip
By Mike Luongo

Bowlers: This week I would like to let you know more4 about the RG (which stands for radius of gyration and core torque) in bowling balls.
First to help you understand the RG, a modern weight block in a professional bowling ball is composed of several parts of different densities. Each of these densities has two chaeracteristics. It is a certain volume and it occupies a certain location. When fused together, all of the different densities (all the weight of the ball) act as if they are a single unit of a single density that is rotating at a single distance from the center of the ball. This is all the RG is. It is a measurement; that tells you how far from the center of the ball the weight acts like it is rotating. As far as core torque, it is a phase we use in the industry to measure the "flip" in the ball. The higher the number, the harder the ball will turn the corner. As with anything else, it is a guide for estimating potential. How flippy a ball really will be is determined by the shape of the core, the bowlers style, the surface of the ball and the lane condition it is thrown on. A tall skinny core will generally flip harder than a short fat core. Even with all of this, it is important that there is no substitute for a good shot.

Ed's Outlook

The annual Monticello Elk's Lodge Scotch Doubles No-Tap bowling tournament is one of those "Fun" tournaments where bowlers relax and have a lot of good times with their fellow competitors.
Such was the case on February 17 when guys and gals took to the lanes at Kiamesha Lanes to compete in the Scotch Doubles No-Tap event. The No-Tap portion of the tournament gives bowlers a strike on a nine-pin hit and scotch doubles is where the male or female leads off and if they don't get a strike the partner has to pick up the spare and the game continues to go on like that.
The February 17 tournament produced a two-time champion, Tom Skiff Jr. and Joan Redington of White Sulphur Springs. They also won this event two years ago.
In their first game of the tournament the champions combined for a 239 while on the lane next to them Mickey and Joan Lake combined for a 300 game.
In the second game Tom and Joan had just one open in the third frame (a 4-10 split which Tom failed to convert) and they finished with a 266.
In the third game Tom and Joan started with 2 in a row and they had strike counts from that point on for the second 300 game of this tournament.
Their final winning tally was 239, 266, 300, 805. The balls of their choice this day was a Morich Ravage II for Joan and a V2 Clean for Tom.
All tournament participants then went to the Monticello Elks Lodge for Roast Beef sandwiches and all the trimmings.
Well done by tournament directors George Kelley and Roberta Yakin.

PROFESSIONAL BOWLERS ASSOCIATION (PBA)

Though the debate over who is the best left-handed bowler on the Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour will never end, Pathrick Allen can lay state to that claim for at least one week.
In a final round featuring the top three lefties currently on Tour, Allen captured his ninth career title and second this season with a 218-169 win over Parker Bohn III last Sunday to win the 2007 Go RVing Classic at Thunderbowl at Council Bluffs, Iowa. The win was worth $25,000 for the former Tarrytown, NY bowler who now makes his home at Wesley Chapel, Fla.

Watch Out For New York Regional Interconnect

State laws have been passed and former Governor George Pataki signed legislation that was designed to be a major obstacle to a huge power transmission line that would run from central New York through Sullivan County to Orange County, but, New York Regional Interconnect (NYRI) will fight this law on grounds that it is unconstitutional.......and there are chances they could win this battle and the line would be built.
The law that was passed and signed into legislation blocks New York Regional Interconnect from using state laws to take land by eminent domain.
With this new state law in effect it then became known that NYRI could use federal law to take land by eminent domain and build the line.
Some have noted that the state law is too narrow to stand up to a court challenge.
Well folks.....here comes NYRI and with them comes a lawsuit in federal court charging that the law unfairly singles out its project and their attorney states it unconstitutional.
This truly indicates that NYRI does not intend to just go away with their proposal to build a 1,200 megawatt transmission line from near the city of Utica to New Windsor in Orange County.
It shows that NYRI has no plans to step aside and bow to the widespread opposition to this proposed power line project.
It has been said that the NYRI project is a billion-dollar job and that it was proposed not to meet the energy needs of upstate New York, but to serve only New York City.
Power line opponents have expressed fear that the state law would not hold up in court because it appears to specifically target NYRI and that the state law is possibly too narrow in its approach.
There is now a possibility that this power play may now switch to the United States Congress where legislation, if approved, could stop NYRI.
Democrat Congressman Maurice Hinchey and two other sponsors are cosponsoring one bill while two other bills are introduced by Hinchey.
Hinchey feels this is the best approach to stopping NYRI "because it specifically addresses provisions in that '05 energy bill which I believe are not inappropriate, but perhaps unconstitutional and clearly contrary to the interests of private individuals and communities as well as states."
We strongly support Congressman Hinchey in this federal legislative effort. All of us need protection from power line corridors and we applaud the congressman for his efforts and consideration in protecting communities from power line abuse.

EBONITE ACQUIRES COLUMBIA INDUSTRIES

Ebonite International, Inc. of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, has entered into an agreement for an asset purchase of Columbia Industries, including the Columbia, Track and Dyno-Thane® brands of bowling equipment, announced William T. Scheid, president of Ebonite. Terms were not disclosed.
"Our goal is to build a portfolio of the best brands in the bowling business to provide distributors, pro shops and ultimately consumers with the products that fit their needs,” said Scheid. “These brands, particularly Columbia and Track, have tremendous equity over a long period of time. We are very pleased to bring them into the Ebonite International family."
Effective immediately, all sales of Columbia, Track and Dyno-Thane bowling balls, bags and accessories will be the responsibility of Ebonite International. Manufacturing of bowling balls for these brands, currently being done at the company’s manufacturing facility in San Antonio, Texas, will be moved to Ebonite International’s Hopkinsville, Kent. facility at some point in the near future.
"As our business has become increasingly competitive with a shrinking market of league bowlers, consolidation became inevitable. We considered a variety of options and felt like the acquisition by Ebonite International provided the best opportunity to maintain the viability of our brands," said David Herrmann, vice chairman of Columbia Industries.
Columbia, Track and Dyno-Thane join Ebonite’s International’s existing consumer brands: Ebonite, Hammer and Robby’s. In addition, Ebonite International is the parent company of Ebonite VanTech Capital Equipment and Vantage Bowling, which serve the commercial side of the bowling business.
"We still have many details to work out but are confident that we will successfully integrate the Columbia Industries products into our company. We did this with the acquisition of the Hammer brand in 2002 and look forward to doing so again," added Scheid.
Ebonite International is a privately-owned company that currently services bowling centers, distributors and retail outlets both domestically and internationally. For more information, visit http://www.ebonite.com/.

Bowling Tip
By Mike Luongo

Bowlers: This weeks tip is for all bowlers regardless of your level and it has to do with understanding the correct body position needed to execute a bowling shot and being able to duplicate it.
If you were to stand straight on the approach, facing the pins, letting the ball hang on your hand, you could not swing the ball straight without hitting your hip with the ball. This is impossible to do without swinging the ball around your hip because the ball is too big. This "roundhouse swing" is not able to be duplicated shot after shot.
Therefore, you must be in a position to be able to swing the ball toward your desired target without any obstacles.
The tip: Get your head as far to the right (or left if left-handed) and tilt your bowling shoulder slightly downward. Contrary to what some of your fellow bowlers might tell you, you must drop your shoulder toward the floor in order to avoid the "roundhouse"swing. At the same time, slightly open your hips and shoulders and you will be able to swing your arm straight toward your target time and time again. Due to different physiologist, the exact position may vary slightly from person to person, but when correctly positioned, you can use gravity to control the tempo of your swing.
Note: If you were to shoot a game of pool, or go to a range and shoot a bow or rifle, note the position your head would have to be in to be effective in these activities. Also, next time you watch Pro Bowling on TV, make note of the bowler's body positions.
