Sanchez Booms RailRiders to Win in 11
Catcher’s Home Run Breaks Stalemate Against Syracuse
Moosic, Pa. – The SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) earned their fourth straight win Thursday night thanks to a majestic
home run by Gary Sanchez in the bottom of the 11th
inning at PNC Field. The blast accounted for the only runs in the
RailRIders’ 2-0 triumph over the Syracuse Chiefs.
Vinnie Pestano
(1-0) entered with two away in the tenth and kept the Chiefs
off the scoreboard through the final stanza for the victory. Reliever
Nick Masset (0-1) absorbed the loss after allowing the winning shot.
An error got the rally started in the decisive frame. With two away,
Slade Heathcott reached on a misplayed grounder by
second baseman Scott Sizemore. Sanchez worked the count to 3-1 against
Masset and crushed the next pitch off the pedestrian walkway above the
left field bullpen to
bring the game to an abrupt end.
The SWB pitching staff has held opponents scoreless for 28 consecutive innings. Starter
Tyler Cloyd tossed five, two-hit innings and reliever
Tyler Webb followed by holding the Chiefs to one base runner over three.
Nick Goody dealt a scoreless 1.2 innings.
Additional Notes:
-The home run by Sanchez snapped a 17-inning scoreless drought for SWB.
-The teams finished a combined 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position.
-Sanchez finished 2-for-5 with a double and the two-run homer.
