Binghamton jumped on the board in the first against Brennan Smith. With two aboard, Smith laced an RBI double into the right-field corner. Matt Oberste added with a run-producing groundout to second. Maikis De Le Cruz scampered home an inning later on a wild pitch to extend the lead to three.
SeaWolf designated hitter Tyler Bortnick started to chip away at the deficit in the second by launching a solo blast off Tyler Pill, his third homer of the season. Kody Eaves tied the game at three by depositing a two-run double into the right-field corner in the fourth.
The B-Mets caught a break in the fifth to regain the lead. With two aboard and two outs, Smith hit a towering fly ball to deep right field. Jeff McVaney grabbed the drive on the run, but lost control of the ball after careening into the wall. Umpire Charlie Ramos ruled the play a non-catch allowing Derrik Gibson and Niuman Romero to scamper home to give Binghamton their second lead.
The advantage, again, slipped away from the B-Mets. With runners on second and third in the fifth, Dean Green launched Pill’s 3-1 offering into the right-field alley to tie the game at five.
Pill exited two batters later in favor of Luis Mateo. The righty stranded Green on third to end the fifth, but couldn’t preserve the tie in the sixth. Eaves opened the frame with a triple to the right-field gap and came home with the go-ahead run when Connor Harrell threaded a single up the middle. Tim Remes put the game out of reach with a three-run homer off Akeel Morris in the eighth.
After losing a pair of leads, the B-Mets offense failed to recover. Erie’s relief corps of Kurt Spomer, Rubin Alaniz and Paul Voelker combined for 10 strikeouts over four scoreless innings.
Spomer (1-0) struck out five over two perfect innings of relief to pick up the win. Mateo (0-2) tossed 2-1/3 innings in the loss. Pill allowed five runs on five hits and struck out five over 4-2/3 innings in the no-decision.
The B-Mets (4-3) conclude their four-game series against the SeaWolves on Sunday afternoon at 1:35 PM. RHP Logan Taylor makes the spot start against RHP Austin Kubitza. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 1:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.
