Silenced Again in Akron, 7-2
AKRON, OH – The
Binghamton Mets were limited to a season-low two hits by Shawn Morimando and
the Akron RubberDucks bullpen in a 7-2 loss at Canal Park on Tuesday night. LJ
Mazzilli’s RBI triple in the sixth broke up Morimando’s no-hit bid, but wasn’t
enough to catalyze the offense in the B-Mets’ second straight defeat.Akron forced B-Met starter Mickey Jannis to labor through a 31-pitch first inning. With two outs, Yandy Diaz threaded a two-run single up the middle to put the RubberDucks on the board. Nellie Rodriguez added an RBI double in the third and Eric Stamets tacked onto the lead with a solo homer to left in the fourth.
Morimando baffled Binghamton over five no-hit innings. The southpaw retired 16 of the first 17 B-Mets he faced. His only blemish was a third-inning walk to Stefan Sabol.
Binghamton snapped out of their offensive malaise and cut the deficit in half in the sixth. Following a walk to Maikis De La Cruz, Mazzilli ripped an RBI triple into the left-field alley. Derrik Gibson made it a two-run game by blooping a run-producing single into right. Justin Brantley took over for Morimando and stranded the tying run on base.
The Ducks dashed the B-Mets’ hopes at a comeback by quickly posting three runs in the seventh. Todd Hankins launched a two-run homer off Kelly Secrest and Bradley Zimmer capped the frame with an infield RBI single.
Sparks flew in the seventh when Bryson Myles missed a bunt attempt with a five-run lead in the seventh inning. Both benches cleared when the Akron designated hitter approached the Binghamton Mets dugout. There were no ejections after the dust settled.
Brantley, Perci Garner and Grant Sides combined for 3-2/3 innings of scoreless relief out of the bullpen for Akron.
Morimando (3-0) allowed two runs on a pair of hits over 5-1/3 innings to earn his third win in as many starts. Jannis (1-1) surrendered five hits, walked three and allowed four runs over four innings.
