Announce 2016 Opening Day Roster
BINGHAMTON, NY – With first
pitch of their silver season just hours away the Binghamton Mets are proud to
announce their Opening Day roster. The B-Mets will welcome back 15 returning
players from the 2014 and 2015 rosters. The club will introduce 13 players to
the Southern Tier for the first time as B-Mets.The B-Mets Opening Day roster is occupied by six players that were Mid-Season All-Stars in their respective leagues last year. Two players were Postseason All-Stars and one was a league MVP. Two players on the B-Mets roster enter 2015 with Major League experience. Six members of the 2016 B-Mets roster played in the elite Arizona Fall League last year.
Starting Pitchers:
Robert Gsellman will get the ball on Thursday night as the B-Mets’ Opening Day starter. The righty led all Mets farmhands with 13 wins last season between High-A and Double-A. The 2015 Organizational Pitcher of the Year was added to the Mets’ 40-man roster in November.
Tyler Pill, Rainy Lara and Mickey Jannis return to Binghamton for another season with the B-Mets. Kyle Regnault and Andrew Barbosa round out the B-Mets rotation in their first season in Binghamton.
Relievers:
Right-hander Akeel Morris opens the season in Binghamton after a sparkling 2015 season. He was a Mid-Season All-Star in the Florida State League, made his Major League debut with the Mets in June and closed the year with a 0.43 ERA in his final 14 games with the B-Mets. Beck Wheeler returns to the B-Mets bullpen after finishing last year in the Arizona Fall League.
David Roseboom, Mike Hepple, Kelly Secrest and Logan Taylor are set to make their Double-A debuts working out of the B-Mets bullpen. Luis Mateo returns to Binghamton after a one-game cameo with the club in 2013.
Catchers:
2014 Eastern League Postseason MVP Xorge Carrillo heads back to the B-Mets to serve as the field general behind the plate. He will be joined by 2015 Florida State League Mid-Season All-Star Colton Plaia and 2015 Texas League Mid-Season All-Star Raywilly Gomez.
Infielders:
2015 Florida State League MVP Dominic Smith highlights the B-Mets infield. The 20-year-old was the Sterling Award Winner for St. Lucie after leading the league in doubles and RBI. Fellow FSL Postseason All-Star Matt Oberste is set to make his Double-A debut and split time with Smith at first base.
LJ Mazzilli, Jeff McNeil and Niuman Romero are back in the Southern Tier for another season with the B-Mets. McNeil was named a Mid-Season and Postseason All-Star with St. Lucie last year. Veteran infielder Derrik Gibson will make his B-Mets debut and split time at shortstop with Romero.
Outfield:
The B-Mets welcome back three outfielders in Victor Cruzado, Jared King and Kyle Johnson. Johnson, an Eastern League All-Star in 2014, is back after spending time in Triple-A last season. Maikis De La Cruz and Stefan Sabol open the season with Binghamton ready for their Double-A debuts.
