RailRiders Blank Mud Hens
Lail, Gurka & Gallegos Combine on Four-Hitter
Toledo, Ohio – The SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) shut out the host Toledo Mud Hens (Detroit Tigers) on Sunday night, 3-0. The RailRiders (28-18) have won 12 of their last 14 and stand a season-best 10 games above .500. The Mud Hens (21-27) have lost 10 of 11.
Starter Brady Lail (2-2) tossed six frames of three-hit ball, whiffing six. Southpaw Jason Gurka fired a scoreless inning of relief and Giovanny Gallegos polished off the shutout with two perfect innings for his second save.
Toledo starter Anibal Sanchez (0-2) carried a no-hitter into the fifth before rehabbing big leaguer Tyler Austin connected on a leadoff single to right-center. Two strikeouts later, Mason Williams and Donovan Solano singled in succession, the last of which pushed Austin across the plate for a 1-0 lead.
In the sixth, Dustin Fowler smashed a one-out double and stole third. With the infield then drawn in, Gleyber Torres ripped an RBI single to left field to make it 2-0.
A familiar formula rounded out the scoring in the eighth. Fowler doubled into the right-field corner with two outs and Torres delivered a single to center, driving Fowler home.
The four-game series concludes at 6:05 p.m. on Monday night. SWB’s Luis Cessa (2-4, 5.00) is expected to face fellow right-hander Drew VerHagen (2-3, 5.74). The RailRiders return home on Tuesday, May 30 to host the Columbus Clippers (Cleveland Indians) at 6:35 p.m. The $2 Tuesday sports $2 lawn tickets and $2 tallboys, presented by La Tolteca.
