Sabol Leads B-Mets Comeback in 7-6 Win
BINGHAMTON, NY-
Stefan Sabol tied the game with a two-run homer in the eighth inning
and Matt Oberste’s sacrifice fly in the ninth put the Binghamton Mets on
top in a 7-6 win over the Hartford Yard Goats, Friday night at NYSEG
Stadium. The B-Mets played as the road team in a game that was closed to
the public.With the game tied at six in the top of the ninth, Amed Rosario singled and took third on a Dominic Smith single. Matt Oberste then lofted a sacrifice fly to right-center, allowing Rosario to tag and score from third, giving Binghamton a 7-6 lead.
David Roseboom allowed a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth but retired the next two he faced to earn his tenth save in as many chances.
Binghamton struck first in the top of the first inning, as Rosario fanned with two outs but reached on a wild pitch from Yard Goats starter Carlos Hernandez. Smith then drove a double to left-center, scoring Rosario from first and putting the B-Mets on top, 1-0.
Ricky Knapp ran into trouble in the third as Raimel Tapia led off with a triple then scored on a Pat Valaika double. Rosell Herrera followed with a double that scored Valaika and later came home on an Ashley Greater single, giving Hartford a 3-1 lead.
The B-Mets fought back in the fifth, beginning with a Maikis De La Cruz single. Later, Phillip Evans snuck a two-out, two-run home run over the left field wall, tying the game at three.
Hartford got back to work in the sixth as Ryan McMahon and Greater singled to lead it off. Michael Benjamin then dropped a sacrifice bunt down that Knapp fielded and threw wildly to first, into the stands. The throwing error allowed McMahon to score from second. Correlle Prime was then called up as a pinch-hitter and roped a single to center. It scored Greater and Benjamin and put Hartford ahead, 6-3.
Smith helped the B-Mets mount a comeback in the seventh, driving home Evans with a two-out single. In the eighth, Sabol belted a two-out, two-run bomb off the batter’s eye in center field. Sabol’s fourth of the season tied the game at two.
Smith finished 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI, Rosario went 3-for-5 with two runs and Sabol was 2-for-2 with a homer after entering in the sixth as part of a double switch.
Kevin McGowan (3-0) earned the win with a scoreless inning in relief. Austin House (5-3) allowed one run in the ninth and was the loser for Hartford.
Game two of the series is set for 5:05 PM on Saturday with RHP Rainy Lara starting against Hartford RHP Alex Balog. Binghamton will play as the road team at NYSEG Stadium in a game closed to the public. POSTGAME NOTES: Stefan Sabol’s home run was his first since June 11, a solo shot against the Yard Goats…the B-Mets homered twice for the second straight night and the 13th time this season…Binghamton won for only the third time when trailing after seven innings, improving to 3-44 in such occasions.
