Big Innings Burn B-Mets in Portland, 9-3
PORTLAND, ME –
The Portland Sea Dogs used a pair of four-run innings to beat the
Binghamton Mets, 9-3, on Friday night at Hadlock Field. Portland lashed
out a dozen hits to snap the B-Mets’ four-game winning streak. Jayce
Boyd launched his first home run of the season in the losing effort.Portland built on their existing one-run lead by hanging a four-run inning on Mickey Jannis in the third. Mauricio Dubon, Andrew Benintendi and Nate Freiman tapped the righty with three straight RBI doubles in the game-swinging inning.
Trailing by five, Boyd helped the B-Mets claw back by belting a two-run homer in the fifth. It was the outfielder’s first home run since May 2015. Amed Rosario cut the deficit to two with an RBI single in the sixth, but it was as close as the B-Mets would get.
In his first appearance since returning from Las Vegas, Rainy Lara inherited the bases loaded from Jannis in the fourth and neutralized the rally. The righty returned with two scoreless innings before pitching into hard luck in the seventh.
Portland put the first two aboard on a pair of infield singles. Freiman ended Lara’s night with an RBI groundout. Ryan Court greeted reliever Luis Mateo with an RBI single and Cole Sturgeon capped the four-run frame by depositing a two-run double into the right-field corner.
Austin Maddox took over from Stankiewicz and posted two perfect innings. Luis Ysla pitched around two singles in a blank ninth.
Jannis (3-9) allowed five runs on seven hits over 3-1/3 innings, his shortest outing of the season. Stankiewicz (3-7) surrendered three runs on five hits in six innings to snap a six-game win drought at home.
The B-Mets (45-52) continue their final regular season visit to Portland on Saturday evening at 6:00 PM. RHP Tyler Pill faces off against LHP Jalen Beeks.
