Flex Muscles in Doubleheader Split
BINGHAMTON, NY- The
Binghamton Mets thumped the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 10-4, in game one of the
doubleheader before falling 11-5 in game two, Friday night at NYSEG Stadium.
Juan Lagares went 2-for-4 while playing game one in center field. Jose Reyes
was a combined 2-for-6 with two runs and played game one at third before starting
as the DH in game two. Jim Henderson took the loss with three runs allowed in
2/3 of an inning during game two, his first rehab appearance. The B-Mets used big innings to take game one. They recorded three runs on six hits in the second inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from L.J. Mazzilli.
Momentum carried into the third with five more runs scoring. Xorge Carrillo knocked in Amed Rosario as he reached on a two-out error that prolonged the inning. Two batters later, Maikis De La Cruz blasted a grand slam to left center, putting the B-Mets on top, 8-2.
Binghamton scored again in the fourth as a Matt Oberste sacrifice fly knocked in Lagares. In the fifth, Rosario singled home Reyes to push the lead to 10-3.
Tyler Pill (5-8) tossed seven innings and allowed four runs on seven hits. He struck out seven and recorded his second complete game of the season and his career.
In game two, the Fisher Cats struck for four runs in the first, three of which were charged to Henderson. Pitching under steady rain, Henderson allowed three runs on one hit over 2/3 of an inning. He exited with two runners on base and Domingo Tapia allowed a three-run homer to Jorge Saez in the ensuing at bat, giving New Hampshire a 4-0 lead.
The B-Mets got a run in the first when Smith drove in Reyes with a RBI single. New Hampshire later put up six runs on five hits in the fifth inning against Logan Taylor, extending its lead to 10-1.
A Phillip Evans three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth cut the lead back to 10-4. Dominic Smith later hammered a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh to make it 11-5.
Mazzilli went a combined 3-for-7 over the two games to extend his hitting streak to ten games. Amed Rosario was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in game one, extending his hitting streak to nine games.
Binghamton and New Hampshire will play another doubleheader on Saturday with game one beginning at 5:35. RHP Jeremy Gabryszwski gets the start for the Fisher Cats. POSTGAME NOTES: Tyler Pill recorded his 21st win as a B-Met, tying him for second all-time…the B-Mets combined for four home runs in the doubleheader...Maikis De La Cruz’s grand slam in game one was the second of the season for Binghamton.
