Evans’ Blast Propels B-Mets to 7-5 Win
BINGHAMTON, NY- Phillip
Evans capped a four-run seventh inning with a three-run shot to left,
vaulting the Binghamton Mets to a 7-5 win over the Hartford Yard Goats,
Thursday night at NYSEG Stadium. With the B-Mets trailing 5-3 in the seventh, Derrik Gibson led off with a single. Amed Rosario and Dominic Smith then walked and Victor Cruzado scored Gibson with a sacrifice fly. Evans followed with a three-run homer to the left field corner, giving Binghamton a 7-5 lead.
The Yard Goats got going in the top of the first as Noel Cuevas drove a two-run home run to left, giving Hartford a 2-0 lead. Binghamton got one back in the bottom half as Champ Stuart belted a leadoff solo shot to left-center, cutting the lead to 2-1.
Stuart later led off the third with a bunt single and promptly stole second. Gibson singled him to third then Rosario smacked a single to right, scoring Stuart to tie the game. In the ensuing at bat, Smith lined a single to right, driving home Gibson to make it 3-2.
Hartford got one back in the fifth when Ryan McMahon doubled in Cuevas, tying the score at three. It took the lead in the sixth on a Dillon Thomas sacrifice fly and a McMahon run-scoring, bases loaded walk.
Tyler Herron allowed five runs on 11 hits with four walks over five and 1/3 innings and took a no-decision. Tim Peterson (3-0) struck out four over one and 2/3 innings to pick up the win.
Stuart was 3-for-5 with a home run, a stolen base and two runs scored, Gibson went 2-for-4 with two runs and a walk and Smith finished 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored.
David Roseboom worked a perfect ninth and converted his fourth save in as many chances.
The B-Mets and Yard Goats continue the four game series on Friday at 7:05 PM. RHP Rafael Montero will make the start for Binghamton against RHP Zach Jemiola for Hartford.
