Justus Sheffield selected for 2018 MLB Futures Game
RailRiders southpaw joins U.S. roster for July 15 showcase at Nationals Park in Washington D.C.
MOOSIC, PA (July 6, 2018) – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, are thrilled to announce that left-handed pitcher Justus Sheffield has been selected to participate in the 2018 SiriusXM Futures Game. Sheffield will pitch for the United States team in the July 15 game at Nationals Park in Washington D.C.
Baseball America ranked Sheffield as the third-best prospect in the New York Yankees system entering the season, trailing only infielder Gleyber Torres and outfielder Estevan Florial, while MLB.com and their updated Prospect Watch rates him as the second-best behind only Florial with Torres in the Majors.
Sheffield, 22, was acquired by the Yankees on July 31, 2016, along with J.P. Feyereisen, Clint Frazier and Ben Heller from Cleveland for reliever Andrew Miller. In 15 appearances this season, including 14 starts, the southpaw is 3-5 with a 2.49 earned run average split between Double-A Trenton and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He has 88 strikeouts and 36 walks over 79.1 innings pitched in 2018.
Sheffield is the first RailRiders player to be tabbed for the Futures Game since 2015 when Aaron Judge was selected. Torii Hunter will manage the U.S. Team this year while David Ortiz will manage the World Team.
